See, this is what I thought CCP was going to add, back when it was talking about pimping starbases and fleets.
I'd like it so that the Fleet Commander (with appropriate skills and access) can 'dock' at a friendly POS, load up the tactical overlay, and see reports from his fleet. It'd be great if he could also feed information down to his pilots using this route.
The information on tactical overlay can be fed from a number of sources (from most, to least amount of information):
- System scanning arrays at other friendly POS' in the same constellation provide the most detail. They basically support remote access, allowing fleet commanders to scan out hostile ships, whether or not the system has any friendly pilots. Chuck in some inaccuracy in the scans or some massively increased scan time, to prevent abuse.
- Scanning from specific probe-launching ships (covert ops, recons, etc.), when set as squad/wing scout. If a pilot drops a probe in another system, then the fleet commander can see the results. Again, some delay or inaccuracy would balance.
- Feed from wing/squad commanders. Not sure of the details here, but it might be that the fleet commander can see a copy of the wing/squad commanders overview information (so basically items on same grid as the wing/squad commander).
- Target and other reports from pilots. As the current system of flagging works, but across a constellation.
That's information from pilots > commander. I'd probably also push that most pilots (short of logistics pilots and commanders) don't need to know the status of other pilots. Could lag be reduced if this information was only sent to the fleet commander, and 'assigned' logistics pilots?
In terms of information from the fleet commander to the pilots. I think pretty standard things. Like setting 'warp to' targets (even if a bookmark?), assigning targets, and giving destinations. That should allow the die-hard fleet commander to direct two wings into some pincer movement of the enemy, and seek them out when they are in system.

Allow the person speaking to project his-her point of view to all viewers.
In real-life, I build virtual worlds for real-life corporations, and we've seen lots of confusion happen when the leader points to a spot in a 3-D model and people on the "other side" of the table don't understand b/c they're getting an obstructed view.

a cool feature can be :
generals are in the tactimal map, during this times recon pilot in hostiles system "mark" hostiel pos, add details and it appear on the strategical map in a way or another, aka :
i'ts not only the ppl who enter manualy or automaticly the information who are in the room, but information gather from the pilot who do a recon jobs.
you could have :
=> Number of hostiles pilots reported => Number of hostiels POS => Reinforcment data => Report of hostiles capitals ships => Report of special installation (capital ship array for exemple)
information who per definition change often and ppl who are in place can see them --------------- Nahh no sign for now :p |

For mining add the ability to see ships in your fleet, and their locations in relation to stations outposts and pos's. also the ability to see cans, rats and wrecks would be nice.

What might be a good feature in terms of the planning aspect is a better filter or a more refined, multi-option filter and by standings, not just certain alliances. Let's face it, in 0.0 space, "system standings" is a bit more like security status for 1.0-0.1 and with the constellation ownership things springing up, useful?
I very much like the idea above of player-selected roles, sniper, scout, EW etc, and have included something using this below.
So anyway, you could get the map to show all star systems that fit certain criteria, for example off the top of my head: * Sovereignty not only of a certain alliance, but of all alliances/corps with a certain standing toward you. * Systems with POS superiority/inferiority by standings as above. * Systems in a certain lightyear range from XYZ system (for cyno route planning, combined with the above could make for tactical considerations in big battles) * Systems with gang members in (and strength of glow by player count option, like with the statistics options now) * Systems with a Cyno-capable pilot in for lighting the thing (player selected role) * Systems with Cynosural jammers (include/exclude) * Systems with Sov 1/2/3/4/Capital tickboxes * Plus all the usual options, station systems, cyno fields etc * Probably many more, people please add to this list! ^ Those are all combat-related ones mainly, industrial types make a list of the kinda things you like and add it on! :D
Random: * Scouts to be able to highlight moons with certain POS types and modules, Large/Med/Small towers, Ship assembly arrays, cap ship arrays, cyno jammers, systems scanners etc * Highlightable talking points, i.e. the FC giving the briefing hovers mouse over a gate/station etc and it glows on everyone else's screen or something.
If the updated criteria and such could have a nice wave-eqsue updating animation from your point/a selected point, I shall love thee muchly. ---------------

Fleet command squad way point control.
Fleet commander can set a desination or way point for a squad and view the route the squad will be taking to get there on his map. Obviously this should be possible with a whole bunch of squads.

Edited by: R3d Devil on 24/09/2007 14:40:11 i think for the none combat players being able to highlight systems for mining ops and things would be handy. so a kind of notice board effect where the system in question is highlighted with a date and time for the op to start.
also marking stations with requirements for minerals for production. or showing people trade routes.
and finnaly the ability to show prices for things accross multiple regions. so for instance if i was selling Dominix class batleships and wanted to see where the best was to place them i could check my own region and add it to the map and ask people to check whatever region they happen to be in as well. that way i can instantly see not only the prices but also their location in relation to myself. would work for buying things as well, specially for minerals which tend to vary from region to region.
EDIT: would like to know how this map would work... would we all have 1 and be able to show ours to other people, or will the corp "own" 1 that any 1 can add to.. how static will it be? once i close the map will i loose the data? or will the data i dont need anymore be cluttering it up 3 weeks later?

Personally, I think the two most important things that this map could do (for use in space) would be:
1) Make it FAST. Skip transitions, animations, etc, etc. If I'm jumping through hostile territory and I want to check the # of people on the other side of the gate, I DO NOT want to wait for fancy turn and zoom effects like the current map insist on. (Yes, even if you turn them off, it will still do them sometimes, like when you try to close the thing.)
2) Make it a window. I hate that the current map prevents me from seeing the space arround me. Combine this with the fact that it is slow and you're in trouble if someone shows up on the overview. The window shouldn't prevent you (at any time) from doing anything else. This means don't put loading screens up that won't let me warp somewhere else, open another window, etc. I need a sig.... |

I would like to see what ever projection that the 3d map overhead has, is also projected 2d on the table. So you can have a 2d/ 3d view at once.
Also pilots should be able to enter market information for planning sessions on sales, and trade routes. For instance a player uploads market dumps from several regions, then can brows between the commodity's and see what buy and sell prices are like. in spacial relations ship. I know when I am trading that I run across a good deal that the buyer is in a different region 1 jump away. But these don't display on region listings.

- Make relaying combat map information require POS/Outpost modules, creating targets of oppertunity and something for small gang warfare as you wanted for a while now. Knock out these modules and you hamper or even completely disrupt spread of information to HQ. With enough work this could even become a solution to ( 0.0 ) local. -----------------------------------------------------

I made something similar to this and it has been very useful. I would show it to everyone but that's a security breach :)
It is an auto-generated map with the use of the API and it shows our region with sovereignty for all the systems, grouped by galaxies, the outposts and the systems with ice. It also has a system finder/highlighter. Everything is color coded and easy to see. Basically it's the Ombey's map with the systems are better arranged so there are no intersecting system links.
Back to the question, I'd like a clean 2D map with no intersecting system links. It would be nice if each person was allowed to have 1 version of the map (which he or she can modify to add/remove features). A corporation could have 2 and an alliance 3 maps that can be edited by the leadership. For example one map could be used to show POS data (fuel for example) and the rest for different ops.
Things I'd like to see on the map: - POS stats - Outposts - Sovereignty - Fleet members - Number of moons, belts, ice belts - Moon scan results - Markers and labels (these could be used to add the moon scan results too) - Routes _____________

To add to my first post:
I would like to see a role differentiated access such that different roles could view different information.
I.E.
POS monkeys can view POS locations and fuel amounts. But others cant.
Fleet Commanders can view friendly gang locations and reported hostile locations. But others cant.
Directors can see all
All can report, reports show who reported it.
Capital Commanders/Fleet Commanders can see all Friendly Cynos, but others cant.
The ability to integrated accross corporations and alliances this information based on standings or individual settings/premissions. GS and RA fight togother and it would be handy for each to know where the others gangs are using this feature if they so choose. As well as hostile repots and all that jazz.

I just had a great idea that would be awesome not only for this map but to the entire factional warfare youre trying to put into the game.
What if you could infiltrate a corp as a spy for another corp?
The corp youre trying to infiltrate has no clue what youre doing but you are still somehow linked to your original corp. You can than pass on valueable information to your corp about what their doing and where they at right now. The spy can than also been seen on the Tactical Map with a special colour that defines him as a spy. He can also send out detailed information that can be seen on the Tactical Map about the enemies ships, ship types, number of players, starbases, outposts and stations.
The spy needs special skills to do stuff like that, the higher his skill the more he can send out and he needs some kind of beacon to send out his signals to the corp he wants to. There has to be a variation in beacons so the signals can be in various types making it harder to be located by the infiltrated corp and in various types so the signal strengt can be stronger or weaker.
Of course the corp with the spy in it needs some kind of protection, maybe a beacon that blocks any outgoing signals to other solarsystems? Or maybe a beacon that blocks the signal after a few solarsystems, or maybe there could be a variaton in beacons that could block the signal of a certain type and maybe even locate the beacon of the spy and find out who he is.
So? what do you think of this idea? Is it something that can be put into the game?

Recon and Data Capture In order for this to be used strategically, it needs to be able to capture, hold and display information gathered through recon work. This includes everything from current pilots in system, to exploration sites, and asteroid types.
If you have a group/fleet member designated as a scout, they should be able to link into the map, so that the information they can gather from local is then usable in the tactical map. This information would be real time(ish) and not persist once the scout has left the system or logged... There are some interesting module/skill options that could be rolled into this too.
If you go about scouting asteroid belts, you should be able to upload that information to the tactical map, so that your corporation can go, view the map, and make decisions about where to mine. The information for "x roid type in y sytem" could persist indefinitely.
If you find sites through exploration, you should be able to link those to the map for corp members to use/visit. That avoids having to leave BMs in hangars etc.
Ultimately, I'm asking for the ability to have scouts and recon operations go out and collect data that can then be used by the commanders watching the map in station. That synergy of information is what would allow leaders and commanders to truly use the map as a tactical tool.
Other Small Ideas
Jump tool. Manually input jump ranges and systems, so that you can plot out routes etc. This should allow you to set multiple points with unique jump ranges that are set manually. That allows the map to be used to plot routes for different ships and also say... "what if I had this jump range".
Notes! Ability to add notes to points on the map. You've already got the note function - link it to map points!
Multiple data filters. The ability to view multiple information types on the map. With the current map, you can view one type of data at a time... region, ship kills, security status, etc. It would be nice if you could set multiple types at once.
Improved NPC information. Be able to view which corps are settled in which systems. Also include agent filters on this... you could even go so far as to build in an eve-agents tool into the map.
That's all for now.

BTW: this tactical map can only be used when your out of your ship right? Than maybe its a good idea to make it so that you walk around in starbases too and have a office where you can talk about stuff.
You could maybe even make a special starbase structure for this where you have your own house and where you can put your own personal stuff in.
Or not, i am suddenly getting a sims feeling about that..... The sims in space... The idea alone is enough to throw up

I would like to see:
1) Cyno Jammers 2) POS Health / Fuel status 3) See a becon that would dectect hostiles based on alliance standings and maybe make the system flash red for hostile forces detected. Something you fit on a POS maybe... 4) Be able to mark Exploration sites so Command can dispatch a team to complete it.
Just a couple quick ideas.

Edited by: pandymen on 24/09/2007 15:23:25 Two things:
-Shows friendly gangs
It was mentioned in the blog, but I think that the leaders of the alliance/corp should be able to control which of their members see what on the overview. For instance, they will give their FC's/directors/trusted minions access to see friendly gangs, but no one else could. Those people can then relay the information and lead their own gangs towards the others for support.
-Show hostiles/shiptypes/info
If it is able to be implemented, it would be great to see info much like the current pilots in system now. If someone scans, just have a ticker, in the past 30 mins, 10 hostiles sighted in system, etc.
My own idea: Share Bookmarks, safespots, explo sites
First off, this would be great if someone who has jumpcloned down to empire could just share safespots and bookmarks with other people in their alliance/corp through this map.
Not only does it have uses in PvP, as a scout may run ahead and make a bookmark, and then move on to the next system, but it would also be great for exploration. More skilled exploration guys can give their carefully crafted set of bookmarks to guys who are just learning how to scan, etc. Instead of needing to have ppl warp to you at every planet bookmark, you can just show them all the bookmarks on the map.
Edit: <3 Devs. As much as people bash them, it's cool content like this and solid interaction with the community that make alot of us enjoy playing eve.

I suppose my earlier suggestions only work in the context of the defender. But they could equally be applied in the context of the offender, if you introduced some special Fleet Command class (similar logistics to those I mentioned above, but maybe a lesser-specced ship mounted view).

Excellent post.
That is something I would like, no... LOVE to see as well. Wanted to write something like that as well, but you were faster
Essentially:
NO additional command options. Just like is now, with gang warps, travel to commands, target, etc. Adding more would give one person IMO too much power.
But: more visibility. A lot more.
Basic lvl should be the galactic map. You should be able to color code different parts of the fleet - so you could have one scout squad, one capital squad, etc - and see in which systems people are. So you'll be able to see at one glance if system x has a scout and which scouts are currently not busy. And if all capitals have left the system and your support can disengage
Then you should be able to zoom into the grid and get a complete overview of it. Could be similar to homeworlds tactical view. With only very basic graphics and the ability to call targets, etc.
You could make providing this grid view a new job for field/fleet commands, meaning a fleet commander can only use this option if a field or fleet command ship is on the grid - uncloaked. So it would be possible for the enemy fleet to concentrate on your command stucture. If there are none of these present anymore it would be still possible to do fleet command the "normal" way, but if one side has them and the other doesn't the side with them would be at an advantage since they can coordinate things WAY better.
Thats of strictly speaking no real ambulation scenario, but the same technology could be used here as well.

S-E-C-U-R-I-T-Y.
I mean srs'y, only two-three people tops have full access to information pictured in devblog. Consider the following - fueling depos, outpost deployments and such is alliance level-clearance infrmation. All outpost owning corporations are in alliance. Only the very, very, very few are supposed to have access to such information. Either congratulations for designing a system for whole 20 people in entire EVE, or a system that won't be used at all.
If you want it to usable, focus on creating robust security and access control platform - I might want to work on supply routes for moon mining POSes with fellow corpmates, but I don't necessary want everyone to know where my next titan is cooking up. Access limited by region (they only need to see POSes in one constellation) and type (they don't have to see my supply depos, only moonmining POSes). Access granted by role(directors can see that and that, normal mambers that and that) and by group (on that presentation I want people from corp xxx see that and that, but for Mr. X from xxx, to see that and that too). Masking of content. (my titan building POS does not show up to anyone, but me).
I want collaborative map, which could contain entire bloody battle plan to win Great War in 3 months and 5 days, I want other people to work on it, but I want it to be flexible enough so everyone will see what he has clearance to see, and nothing more.
you know, you might even go as far and add scripting languasge to set priviliges - alliance/corp's chiefs of security would finally have something to do, while casual users would operate map with set of default options.

Great news. Really good. Looking forward more and more towards ambulation
Good suggestions so far. And look at the influence map, something like this in-game would be awesome :)
Also add some (stepwise) animation over the course of time, so that it will be very easy to see what changed.
Maybe it would also possible to define your own filters (as in making your own script how to colour the stars based upon some available basic building blocks). That would be really great.

I wonder how this will balance between freeform and interactivity, mixing the two is a hard task.
If this is only free form it will only be usable for whole picture. If it's a fast interactivity map, features will be more sparse.
In fact I'd like two map, one for freeform presentation with lot's of formating feature but that don't interact with in-game data, so it's purpose is to represent the infinity of details that can't be articulated well with a system, and a map that has extended specific data about ingame information that can be actualized automaticaly, acuratly and fastly.

Make several versions of the scanner, but it has the ability to upload its scan results to the tactical map. there is a timer say every hour or 30 minutes. lesser on the high end one.
Timer can be skill dependant and or different on the module stats according to t1/t2
So t1 mod basic skill gives you 1h fire rate skills gets it down to 30mins at lvl 5
T2 version starts at 40 mins but will with maxed skill only take a 10-15min timer on the battle reports to be uploaded to the main fleetcom
Also allow survey and ship data to be tagged along with it if the ships have a scanner for it. this means reports as frequent as 4 every hour, to limit traffic spam. And it should contain everything you currently can see on your scanner, aka exploration content, fleets, pos setups, moon data.

Or have a deployable structure required to make this work, like a scanner post. They could be good targets for small gangs.

would be pretty sweet.
If we have to be docked back at a station to use the map, I fear it won't get much use unless it has some special intel information like this.
