Can anyone recommend a 'professional' organization that teaches PvP tactics and whatnot? I've been a bit of a carebear to this point, but PvP has my interest. Specifically, learning how to be an effective FC.
My corp has toyed with the idea of enrolling in a program, but I'm tired of waiting. We are going to need strong leaders soon - so before I jump in the FC seat and get our fleet blown to smithereens I thought it might be a good idea to look into some training.
Any recommendations? I'm not looking to join a new corp - just to train to be a more effective player.

You need to go to Agony. They have great classes and teach all PVP, starting with basics.

look up Agony Empire, they teach and specialize in small gang PvP warfare and they generally hold classes every weekend. Our corporation has been considering something similar.

Edit: LOL 3 recommendations in 3 minutes, guess Agony are doing something right :-)
There is a good thread here with some sensible FC'ing advice as well.

This comes with experience and patience.. slow down.. you should first learn the basics of PVP before even thinking about commanding.
There are certain courses around and what not, but really nothing beats personal experience. Its sort of like reading a book on how to play an instrument - it doesn't really work like that.

That's where Agony shines. They can teach both old experienced PVP players and 1 week old noobs.

I disagree, pretty much every good PVPer I know is self tought. Agony Unleashed teaches you how to be a PVP drone. Not how to be a good PVPer.
Its like reading a "Rock guitar for dummies" book and expecting to be the next Jimi Hendrix, it doesn't work like that.

incredible response! I will definitely talk to Agony - thank you.
I should have mentioned that I'm not a TOTAL noob, and I'm not looking for PvP 101. - I've been in on many pvp ops, many defense fleets, and many roaming defense squads - but I've never FC'd. - And I don't feel comfortable just yet jumping into an FC position. I've been ingame for about 2yrs, but know little or nothing about FCing. I only know the FC's that do a good job for us - and I aspire to be one of those FC's someday. I'm in no big rush. This is something I've been thinking about for oh, 6 months or so. I've been a carebear, but I've got decent skills for pvp, with a total of about 27m sp. (this is my alt, obviously)
thank you all again for the quick responses!
edit - I've been ingame for about 3 years, but only the last 2 years steady playing.

You really don't get it. Some of the best PVPers have done an Agony class or two. And they have learned from it. But be opinionated and uninformed... that's your choice.
Best testament to Agonys succes would be the words of their opponents, I think...

This is why we don't just tell you how to PVP... we show you and then take you out to PVP.
ie. practical experience in addition to lessons
Oh ya - and we do things a bit differently but the proof is in the results.

Being an FC is one of the most difficult things to do in Eve, mostly because it smarts to lose other people's ships. I recommend first getting used to losing your own ship and pod. Once that is no big deal, you are ready to concentrate on the battle. Probably the most important FC skill is situational awareness. Having good covops and scouts in systems around the main fleet, processing intel reports, knowing the lay of the land and knowing the capabilities of your pilots and their ships.
In the meantime, the best thing you can do is educate yourself. This is where Agony's classes may come in handy. PvP Basic teaches the usefulness of frigate fleets and how to apply Ewar effectively. PvP Wolfpacks shows you how a destroyer fleet can be effective, and how to make tactical bookmarks. It's critical to know game mechanics to set traps and not be defeated by them. We did have an FC style class, but it's in for retooling.
When you start out being an FC, try to take out some frigate gangs. If the gang gets wiped out, it's no big deal, and you gain valuable experience. And it's fun, too!
Feel free to contact me (Dez on the Agony site is best), if you have any questions.

I will tell you... Flying with Agony Unleashed has been some of the most fun I have had online with my pants buttoned. The only better investment I have made online besides the PVP Basic Course is with my annual membership to Met-Art. Damn I love that site.
