Heya, Been working on my shield skills and picked this one up recently but I'm thinking it might not be such a good idea afterall. A shield's peak regen is at around 30% and below 5% it really hits rock bottom, why wouldn't I want my armor to absorb damage in order to not go below the peak regen (and thereby effectively putting me in a pod)?
- Seems more harm-than-useful to the passive tanker.

it has been confirmed that the damage taken by the armor is in addtion to, not subtracted from, the damage that still hits the shields

Has this really been confirmed? Is there a link with some crunched numbers I could peruse?

Tactical Shield Manipulation works now, it was bugged before.
For example, me with it at lvl4, I can still have my shields take full damage and not bleed through to armor even below 10%. At 5% however, I start to see bleed-through. -

Sounds like it's been changed to do exactly what the skill description says. Previously there was a theory that below 25% shields, there was a chance that damage would leak through to shield and TSM reduced this chance, not reduce the threshold.
Now if only they could do the same with Fast Talk...

A recent patch was said to fix this issue (read through the patch notes). Since I armor tank I have no idea if it works or not...but been told it was fixed.

Speaking of damage leaking through, does anyone else experience damage leaking through armor into structure? I'm sitting at 15-20% armor and my structure starts taking minuscule damage, it's not a huge problem as I mostly see it while ratting, probably because if I was at that point in pvp I'd die anyway plus I can pay more attention while ratting, but I have OCD (not really) and it bugs me

Yes, I was on a mission the other day and it was getting a little rough and I took something like 33 points of hull damage when my armor was around 10%, didn't notice until I docked and used the repair button to fix my drones that got aggro'd. On the readout in space, however, it showed my hull at 100%.

If I remember correctly, getting that skill to lvl 4 is a prereq for T2 shield hardeners...so you'll want to train it whether or not the actual benefit from the skill isn't that helpful.

In my eyes, if youre passively tanking, then if you see your shield HP go below 33%, you should warp off. I can count the number of times where going below that point didnt have any consequences with 1 hand's fingers.
Verdict: This skill is a prerequisite for Invulnerability Field II's. Train it to level IV and forget about it.
If you're active tanking, the 5% difference might, just might save you in a tight situation, but it is very unlikely. I wouldn't recommend training past IV, but IV is a must. Inlul II's are great. ^__^ |

Unless, of course, you want to use a capital shield booster at some point, which requires the skill at V.

Used to be bugged, worked as normal level I-IV, but level V was as if not having the skill at all.
It's true that it worsens a passive tank slightly, but the difference is minute.
As has been said, the skill is a must have for t2 shield hardeners.
