I know the Hulk setup for solo 0.0 mining, but I still lack the cash for the Gistii Shield Booster. Until then - I plan to mine Omber in high-sec. The question is - what is the Hulk setup that will be able to tank the rats in an 0.5 belt? Will a Civilian Shield Booster hold or should I go to entire different setup.

I use 2 rat-specific shield resistance rigs on mine(EM and Thermal) and have never had to use the shield booster once, even though I keep my drones on board until all the rats have aggro on me. You'll be fine if you don't fall asleep at the keyboard.

Mining Omber in large quantities ? BAD IDEA.
Instead, mine either Kernite, Plagioclase or Veldspar (in that order). Yes, Veldspar is a much better thing to mine as Omber if you plan on refining and selling the minerals, go figure.
As for the 0.5 rats ? I doubt they can beat down your UNTANKED Hulk if you have half-decent shield operation/management skills. Add a T1 invul and a few cheap shield extenders if you're worried, you should be perfectly safe... from NPCs.
Also, you'd probably want an unrigged Hulk, with T1 strips. Why ? Wannabe "macro punisher" types suiciding Hulks in highsec, usually never bothering to check if you're "legit" or not. Most of the time, it's just people using that as an excuse to loot T2 strips and other nice mods (gist small shield boosters, hehe). _

I have maxed Shield Tanking skills and with no Hardners or tank fitted I can passive tank 0.5 rats in a Hulk with its natrual resists and Shield Recharge
(not that I do mine in an untanked hulk in hi sec )
and for Hi sec mining I wouldn't bother fitting any Faction tank - it is pointless and only gives suicide gankers a reward

Ok - what is the chance I will get suicide ganked in a Hulk in 0.5? And ISK-wise - is buying Covetor for high-sec a better option? How should I tank the 0.5 rats in a Covetor?

Hey Charlize,
I wouldnŠt waste ore yield in fear of some stupid gank squads you might necer actually see in your life.
I would suggest that you find yourself a nice and quite 0.9 system in Minmatar or Gallente space and start mining Plagioclase. Plagio is atm the ore you want to mine due to the insane Mexallon prices. If you are located in Caldari space you will need to find a 0.7 system. Link to Ore Info
Rats in 0.9 are really nothing to worry about.
And do try to max your yield in every way financially possible for you. At least I wouldnŠt want to waste ISK.
So IŠd go for 3 Tech 2 Strippers with Tech 2 Crystals, 2 MLU in Lows and whatever in Med. You might want to fit a Small Shield Booster and some passive Hardeners till you know what your up to against. But you will not need a tank.

I agree with all of the posts above. You don't need anything except a shield booster (small tech 1) in the mid slots for dealing with the NPC's.
Personally, I don't think there's much of a risk of suicide gankers, so I wouldn't worry about them.
What I would do is fit a warp scramber/disrupter and a webber. I would fit this for 2 reasons: 1) You've got the spare mid slots; 2) To take out the odd ore thief that shows up.
If you're really serious, fit a passive or active EM tank on the shields if you encounter an ore thief in a frigate. I wouldn't go up against a destroyer or cruiser, but I did see a YouTube video where a Hulk did sucessfully take on both those type (though that Hulk had 2 Nos's in the highs). |

I would suggest against attacking anything in high sec, in a hulk. The last thing you want to be flying when you flag yourself for pvp is a Hulk. More than once I've ransomed a hulk for insane amounts when they attacked my can stealing battle-badger. One nos, one light blaster, and an unganged shield transfer ship that warps in can totally ruin your day.

As for the rats, I can tank the bleedin 0.5 rats in a Retriever with whatever shield booster I can manage to stuff in the hole and halfway decent shield skills. Just pay attention to your drones to make sure they kill what's eating you before the rats can do much damage.
In a Hulk, if you get taken out by 0.5 rats, you'll have given the Universe a valid reason to laugh at you. (Might not even need the shield booster for 0.5 rats if you're good enough with the drones) _______________________________

I got taken out in a Covetor once by two 4k frigates.
Basically, frigates spawned, Eve froze and I couldn't log in for an hour. Back in the days when the 13k user limit was stretching the server's ability to cope :)
I got back into game and I was in a pod. Of course, the GM logs showed nothing...
