well, the title says it all :) is it worth it isk/hour wise? I can get an iteron V with salvaging&tractor beams to collect all the stuff from missions, but I'm not sure if it would be worth the time or not.
thanks ----------------------------------------------- yarr! Its great being Amarr, ain't it? |

Short answer? Yes! Longer answer? Hell yes!
Even longer answer? Depends on the opponent. I personally don't bother with Guristas opponents but Blood Raiders and Sansha's, as well as Angels, provide excellent salvage.

Use a Destroyer. I use a catalyst with 4 salvagers and 4 tractor beams in highs AB with a cap recharger in mids and PDU's in low slots. Works a treat and personally yes it is worth it cause every little helps i suppose

This question comes up pretty often. Really it depends how fast you are at running missions - once you can do them with great skills and a high damage setup, you earn isk faster just doing missions. However, it can still be worthwhile looting selectively (ie for certain missions, or just looting BS wrecks).
For the average mission runner in a low dps cruise Raven setup though, it's worth looting and salvaging I reckon.

Yes it can be rather worth looting your missions. The items can either be sold to market or simple melted down to mins which are easy to move (sell). I would advise that you not use an itty because it would be much to slow (ships speed and the fact that you would only have one tractor and one salvager). People often use a destroyer for this (8 high slots) but you could also use an exquorer (4 high slots) the advantage to the exquoror being that the cargo hold grows for each cruiser lvl resulting in few trips back to station.

Edited by: Rialtor on 01/10/2007 07:01:11 It depends on the mob you're fighting. Some mobs have good salvage, some have crap salvage. Some mobs have good loot, some mobs loot isn't so good. All in All I think Sansha will net you the most money lb for lb than any other group. I haven't run charts and graphs or any kind of study, just my experiences. Sansha drop a good deal of Large Lasers, Nos and Neuts which sell pretty well for a good price, and you can get Melted Capacitors salvaging them. Blood Raiders have good salvage, I find their items junk. Angels have good salvage and loot. Gallente and Gurista are trash in both areas I find. Mercs have bad salvage but good loot.
Also don't use an iteron, use a destroyer or something. Personally I use a nanofitted, cargo expanded Armageddon with an MWD, and AB. 4xSalvager, 4xTractor Beams.

I usually have a second-account alt collecting loot in a destroyer, or if in my experience there is a lot of high volume junk an industrial. However, both ships have defenses like paper, so I generally have to wait until the rats are dead before coming in.
I have considered coming in while the fighting is still going on, in a heavily-tanked Drake, but haven't tried it yet. One reason is that I need all my attention, usually, for fighting the rats.

Yes. Generally for any level of mission you will make the same or more money from loot+salvage than bounties+rewards, and in a fraction of the time it takes to run the mission. I loot+salvage pretty much everything and it gives me items for my PVP stash, good money on named modules/salvage, and a sustainable source of minerals to make ammo from. On an average size level 4, i make around 5-6mil from bounties, 10+ from salvage and anything from 5-30 from loot so it's definately worth it.
Do not use an indy though. Use a destroyer or battlecruiser with 4 Salvagers, 4 tractors, an AB/MWD, cap rechargers and expanders. Optimise your loot/salvage path well and you'll make more isk than just missioning. You will however be running fewer missions/hour you'll consequently be making fewer LP+standing/hour. If you fill your cargo, just jetcan it and come back with your indy to pick it up.
All the above might not be the case though if you have multiple tens of million SP and can rip through level 4 missions in super-quick time, but I can't :)

I'm running level threes at the moment, until this new bunch like me enough to let me do level fours, and having a lot of success in a Myrmidon with two tractors, three salvagers and a railgun for attracting aggro. I let my drones (Vespa II mostly) do all the hard work while I worry about tractoring and salvaging the wrecks.
Helps if you've got good drone skills and a thick armour tank, of course, but I'm expecting to do the same thing in level fours with a dominix.

That.
Most people run missions in cruise ravens so for most people it's worth their time.
Even with high damage fast setups there might be missions or parts of some missions worth either looting or rarely looting/salvaging. Some Battleship clusters where they have all died in 20 km radius around you as you have killed them before they managed to fly apart and other similar things. It's usually not worth to run after every bit of loot/salavage and the faster you are the less you care about loot.

Exactly, for the most part I don't loot anymore, except for a couple missions. As I can make more money from just doing another mission, instead of hoping to get good loot. ---------- I gave up on sigs. As all the beatings from the abusive mods are starting to hurt and leave nasty bruises. |

i use an armegeddon to salvage with... no too much more than a battle cruiser and has 8 low slots for cargo expanders. also has a drone bay in case you have respawns which definately does happen if you sit there long enough.

If you are going to use a second character to do the salvaging / looting, I recommend the drone ships.
Currently have mine doing the loot and salvage in a Vexor, 3 salvagers 2 tractor beams, and 5 medium drones with ship bonus to assist with damage. Will probably upgrade him to a Dominix once he has enough skills for me to feel comfortable with him piloting it.

As said depends on how fast you complete missions compared to how fast you could fully salvage a mission.
Also depends on your social skills and the system sec rating that you mission in to compare mission reward vs loot rewards.
Lowsec generally isnt worth looting/salvaging with the exception of things that'll drop factional loot and even then, eh.

I wouldn't use a iteron V. It doesn't have enough high slots for effective salvaging/looting and you are unlikely to fill up it's cargo hold enough to justify such a beast. For level 1-3 missions a destoyer is the ideal salvager. Fit tractor beams and salvagers in the highs, MWD in the mids and the rest with cap modules, with perhaps a cargo expander. For level 4s it isn't as obvious, you could use a destroyer above but there is sometimes over 1000m3 of loot, excluding Cap boost charges and scrap metal. So you either have to make a jetcan and pick it up later or use something bigger. I use a Hurricane with the same setup as the destroyer but with 5 cargo expanders and an Nano, it has about 1600m3 of space, I put 2 Large containers in it to get more loot in there too.
Speed is important when salvaging, that's why I only salvage after the mission is handed in so i can use MWDs.

Battleships for salvaging? Oh dear. That must take a long time.
Try a Thrasher (Minnie Destroyer) with AB fitted, 4x tractors and 4x salvagers. Its got a decent enough cargo hold, 8x hi-slots and is fast.

Iteron V? gaaahhhh it would take you forever.
Destroyer (or Interdictor).. 8 high slots, great salvager.

Not exactly the fastest method but I use the following:
I run missions in my Dominix and have 1 tractor, 2 salvagers in high slots (rest of the setup is pretty much tank) and while my drones kill stuff I tractor, loot and salvage. It's not exactly time-efficient but I just don't like going back with a different ship just to salvage and loot. And even then, the 600 m¦of cargo of my Domi isn't always enough (I usually get around 800+ m¦in loot and salvage and drop cap charges and metal scraps then)

As others have said, it depends on the mission and how fast you can run another mission. I always loot and salvage certain missions - anything against faction navies, Angels, Blood Raiders, Sanshas.
I loot and salvage missions with above average loot - Mercs drop nice loot (like Arbalest HMLs), but crap salvage (like metal scraps).
I rarely loot and salvage Serpentis missions, unless I don't have time to run another mission, or there are a ton of battleship wrecks.
For looting and salvaging, I use a Catalyst on one account and a Badger II on the other account. The Catalyst does 99% of the work. He zips from wreck to wreck, looting and salvaging, until his 650 m3 cargohold is full, then he drops a can. The Badger just plods behind my Catalyst, picking up the cans with his tractor beam, and salvaging a wreck every now and then. Even if the Badger doesn't do anything major, the gang bonus I get by having him there is nice.
Catalyst setup:
4x salvagers 4x tractor beams
1x 1 MN AB 1x Cap Recharger II
2x Expanded Cargohold II 1x Cap Power Relay II
3x Salvage Tackle Rigs ------------

It's definitely worthwhile if you use the right ship for salvaging. You don't even really need to have a dedicated ship to do it. If you're in a raven you have 2 slots that aren't being used by torps/cruise launchers, so a tractor beam and salvager work well there.
Or, if you're like me and like to fly lvl 4s in a myrmidon, you can use as many highslots as you want to salvage and loot
Regardless of how long it takes to run missions, if you can salvage while at the same time run the mission then you will always make more isk
