No shields.. no armour... very little structural integrity left. His ship was coming apart at the seams and all he could think of was her. Always her. Through all the deceit, the infatuation and twisted confusion, always her.
The incoming torpedo was over a hundred kilometres away. Plenty of time.
"My dearest - I write this to you in a hurry, should events unfold shortly that take away my chances to tell you this in person,"
Ninety.
"I want you to know that, despite everything that has happened between us, every experience we have shared and every guilt-ridden moment we didn't, it was always going to be you -"
Eighty.
"-that struck me as somehow different, somehow more significant than any other person i've ever had the pleasure to interact with. Mistakes were made on both sides, and .."
Seventy. The proximity alarm began to insistently chime, demanding his attention. He shut off the audio with a grimace, not wishing to be reminded of his inevitable doom.
"..i feel it is only fair to tell you that you will forever have my gratitude for being the one to make me see that there is so much more to life than i could ever have imagined."
Sixty - somehow the visual display felt worse than the audio.
"You're going to live out your life, and before i miss my chance, i really need you to know that you deserve everything the universe has to offer. Happiness, long life..."
Fifty kilometres.
"...the contentedness you could never experience with me... all of it. I want so desperately for you to have that. Were i able, i'd reach out and give you the very stars."

"Look, i'm running out of time here... I think i've said almost everything that needs said. Its crazy but here i am, on the very cusp of annihilation and suddenly i remember meeting you for the first time."
Thirty kilometres.
"It was your eyes. Those beautiful, expressive eyes. Once i'd seen them, i could barely think of anything else. For me, nothing else happened that night. I must have acted like a fool" He laughed to himself. It sounded discordant, so he stopped.
Twenty.
"Do you remember?"
Ten.
"I wish nothing but the best for you."

The charged-plasma warhead blossomed on impact, enveloping his torn ship in cataclysmic shockwaves that tore apart cellular structures, leaving behind only twisted wreckage, dust and memories.
