If I launch my drones and tell them to attack my target, and after a battle, some guy comes along (while my drones are still out) and targets me, causing me to auto target him back, will my drones will then attack him and concord kicks my butt?

1/ you should turn off auto-targeting. If you ever have a module activated, you will auto-target back someone and agress him, then concord will shoot you!
2/ drones are stupid, but they don't yet attack people that do not agress you. Your drones will only answer agressions, so the guy will need to do something concord would shoot him for before your drones attack him. And he would have an aggresion flag against you, which would allow you to attack him.
The auto-targeting can be set to 0 in the drop down menu on bottom left when you hit esc to get the menu. -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast ! The Vexor Navy Issue is much more fun than the Myrmidon ! |

There is a drone option that says engage current target. If I selected that for my drones, won't they stay in that mode? Thus, when my target locks, won't they then move to attack it or am I not understanding the "engage current target" drone setting?

They wont engage just by targeting the guy, however if they are out and the enemy is in your drone control range they will auto-aggress if he attacks you.

When you first launch drones, they're in a default mode. They will auto-target and attack anyone who aggresses you after the drone was launched.
Once you tell them to attack something, they go into a slightly more aggressive mode, in that after the current target is gone, they will auto-target and attack anyone currently aggressing you.
When you tell them to "return and orbit" they go into a passive mode, just orbiting your ship no matter what happens.
At least, that's what happens 99% of the time. Drones are a little buggy occassionaly. Sometimes they won't return, and you have to command them to attack something, then re-command them to return. Sometimes they won't switch targets when you tell them, and you may have to tell them to return to the ship, then re-command them to attack.

The engage target command only stays in effect while the selected target is still alive, or you issue another command. Once the command expires they attack the nearest hostile entity. Hostile being anything that has attacked you or the drone.
