Having read some of the posts in this thread, I have to admit I'm a little confused. Whilst not a total idiot, I am of course part-idiot. Allow me to state my understanding, and then the goons can say silly things before someone else actually provides relevant information :D
Once Revelation III comes out, there will be 2 version of Eve.
Everyone will upgrade to the "Classic", which still uses DirectX8, but now has spunkier and hornier looking models all round. And there way much rejoicing.
However the real geeks who have Windows Vista, and a graphics cards capable of running DirectX10 can run Uber-Eve. Which is the same as classic but with bigger boobs.
Where I get confused is as follows. All along we've been told "DX10, DX10", which as we know required Vista. But in reading the thread I linked to, I read several posts saying Uber-Eve needs DX9 with Shader Model3.
So which is it? I have a not-totally-**** graphics card at the moment. It's not DX10, so no Uber-Eve for me. But can it do DX9 with the shaven-haven? Dunno, but this is the first time I've heard that Uber-Eve won't use DX10.
Unless DX9SM3 and DX10 are the same thing. In which case you should all get together and agree to stop confusing me.
Have at it. |

From what I can tell after reading dev blogs and forum threads that uber-eve will work with dx9 card and wont require windows vista.
Some speculate that dx10 version is coming later.

There will be NO DX10 EVE in the rev3 expantion, this will come at a later date. All you need is DX9 with a shader mk3 capable video card. This will run fine on XP, and probably on windows 2000 too (if EVE even still runs on that...)

Edited by: Jaketh Ivanes on 08/10/2007 12:05:53 Good question. Thought I would just get EvE without client lag with Rev 3, as I don't have vista or an nber gfx card. Would be cool if I also got the good "boobs"
EDIT: Damn, thought I would be first. But question was answered, thanks guys

Thanks guys, a nice summary. So DX10 comes later, and for now it's classic and semi-Uber.
As for what will run it, does a GeForce Go 7900 GTX run DX9 with SM3? |

I'm doubting a bit with the "Go" part, but the desktop brother of that one should run it, yes. As i said above, i believe that everything above a 6800 from Nvidia has shader model 3, so you should be fine

Also if your videocard does not support shader model 3.0 you can still use the client as it is now.

where did people get DX 10 into their heads in the first place?
all of the screen shots have been DX9, and I've never been confused.
Have you SEEEN DX10? it blows what the graphics update is doing out of the sky.
which is why there is no real DX 10 game yet, their are no DX10 graphics cards, lol. hopefully they are coming soon with the newer motherboards finally saying they will support DX10, can't wait to upgrade. ----------------------------------- I'm working my way through college target CCP need...more room... |

To try and sort this out:
We currently have our client, this client you use every day and it will remain.
In the november expansion we will release Trinity II, a DX9 version of the client.
So we will have two clients at this point, the original and the Trinity II with DX9.
At some point in the future we will also release a DX10 version, but this is not the Trinity II expansion.

As far as I know you won't need anything particularly great, the only real issue for a lot of people is the requirement for your graphics card to support Shader Model 3.0, which a lot of older cards don't. This means that even if the rest of your computer is the absolute best, you still have to play with the current engine till you get a new graphics card.

Well, the new engine is designed to run smoother, and take a lot of load of your CPU, so probably, Yes. We won't know for sure before it's out tough. If i were you i'd wait until there are some benchmarks out and stuff

You should be fine, i don't see any reason why it shouldn't run. Remember, CCP is rewriting the client to INCREASE performance on med-high end PCs. Not decrease it. Edit:spelling

Edited by: Paulo Damarr on 08/10/2007 13:47:33 Any (true) dual core will run nicer even if the new client isn't geared towards it specifically because or all the background junk is handled separately.
I might be going out on a limb but I would say any machine with a single core CPU equivalent of 3 GHz, 1mb of any type of DDR ram and any card post 2005 with 256 MB will run the new client fine.
*This is based on the current average games not system breakers like oblivion or sup com etc

Let me try and clear up the confusion and collect discussion from this thread on the size of the install and this thread on the new graphics engine.
First of all, the November expansions, codenamed "Kali3", is not the DX10 upgrade, that will come later.
"Kali3" will contain a new graphics engine that now supports DX9 SM3 in addition to supporting DX8 as before.
There will be one client but two installs. The same graphics engine and the same game code will be in both installs, but different graphics content. The smaller install, codenamed "Classic", will only contain the DX8 graphics content while the full client will contain both DX8 and DX9 SM3 graphics content.
When we release "Kali3" then all Revelations II installs will be upgraded to the "Classic" install (15-30 MB patch). If the hardware is DX9 SM3 capable then you will be offered to download the new DX9 SM9 graphics content in the background (600-900 MB probably).

Just pointing out the obvious typo, he meant 1GB offcourse.
Also, 2 dev replies in one thread? /me bookmarks the thread to refer people to when this questions arises again in a week or so

I would like to know if my scimitar is going to old piece of **** model in the old client :(
it's tames like this I already wish I could Apply to CCP so I could make a quick low polygon model for the old graphics to replace a few of the bad ship designs.
like the scimitar.. the new model doesn't even resemble the old one at all. and I personaly would take the time to make it at least LOOK like the same ship on both clients. ----------------------------------- I'm working my way through college target CCP need...more room... |

So, there will be no UI-network decoupling in november (ex. doing view item and then sell item you will no longer have to wait for market screen to reload before you can do something else)?

THIS is nice, but pretty please give us the ability to pause the download. I'd hate to PvP with lag from an background download i can't stop
BITS @ wikipedia. Notable quotes from this article include:
Originally by: Wikipedia BITS uses unused bandwidth to transfer data. Normally, BITS transfers data in the background, i.e., BITS will only transfer data whenever there is bandwidth which is not being used by other applications, for example, when applications use 80% of the available bandwidth, BITS will use only the remaining 20%. BITS constantly monitors network traffic for any increase or decrease in network traffic and accordingly throttles its own transfers to ensure that other foreground applications (such as a web browser) get the bandwidth they need. BITS also supports resuming transfers in case of disruptions.
And:
Originally by: Wikipedia BITS transfers files, on behalf of requesting applications, asynchronously, i.e., once an application requests the BITS service for a transfer, it will be free to do any other job, or even terminate. The transfer will continue in the background, as long as the network connection is there. Even when a user is not logged on, BITS continues the data transfer.
BITS suspends any ongoing transfer when the network connection is lost, or the operating system is shut down. It resumes the transfer, from when it left off, when the computer is turned on later and the network connection is restored. BITS supports transfers over both HTTP and HTTPS.

Sorry, I still have one question: Will Kali3 bring any improvement (faster, some effects...) to the DX8 client or will it stay completly the same as now?

BITS has signficant issues that can be painful in a common gaming environment.
The typical use of BITS is in corporate software package deployment using SMS. Even on a corporate network with excellent resources BITS can be dangerous because of how it works. I'd recommend reading the SMS 2003 Planning guide to see how the software promise deviates from how it actually works.
BITS does resume downloads very well and keeps cpu to a minimal. However if the cpu is starved in a large fleet fight it can be noticable. A pause function would be nice.
The important thing is how BITS doesn't work. BITS is only aware of client network conditions. If the client is connected using a 100mb nic to a router, then to a slower 56k link, BITS will consider the entire link to be 100mb. The 56k link will be saturated.
The other possible issue is that the Proxy may need to be set manually. BITS uses the IE proxy settings but ignores proxies for other browsers.
