Looking at the link I am unclear why I should hate OOXML.
Standardization is generally good. Is it just that it is Microsoft owning the last 2% of the world they haven't got their hands on yet?

Agreed that standardization is generally good, but not under these circumstances...

Edited by: Dark Shikari on 08/10/2007 17:30:31 If you don't understand why OOXML is bad, here's a quick anecdotal example.
In the OOXML standard, supposedly "open" (its a standard, obviously, it has to be fully open so that people can use it!), it makes a reference stating that "tables are just like in Word 95." Of course, given that Word 95's standard wasn't open, such a statement tells you nothing, and if you're trying to implement a program using it, you're wondering how in the world you're supposed to code your tables.
In other words, its called "open", but its not in any sense of the word, and Microsoft has resorted to stacking the votes and strong-arming various nations in attempts to get it passed.

I'll put it this way: Instituting this as a standard is like changing the official unit of length in the US to my Wang. Awkward, difficult to discern properly, and wholly inappropriate. ------------ Whiners - Unite! | Posting and You Tarminic - Forum Warfare Specialist. |

Correct me if I'm wrong (I usually am) but even in the land of the free and the home of the brave, don't you usually have to do something wrong to be jailed?
Last time I looked, being a skank and having limited intelligence weren't actually endictable offences... my information could be out of date though.
No doubt one of EVE's many barrack-room lawyers will crawl out of the woodwork to set me right.
The next revolution won't be televised; it'll be pod-cast. |

Here's one very very simple reason why OOXML sucks.
It's not backwards compatible.
Last week, one of the teachers I work with was trying to print something NOW because he needed it for a meeting five minutes ago. He typed it up on his new Vista laptop, saved it to his flash drive, and brought it to work. He tried loading it on someone's computer at work, running some older version of Office, and no worky.
Sure, the workaround is simple enough, save it as an older format. Not possible in this case because his laptop was at home. It's just annoying and stupid when software companies institute new formats which will eventually force you to upgrade, or at least (in this case) make you believe you need to upgrade.
For more enjoyment and greater efficiency, consumption is being standardized.

Well she got her license suspended for a DUI or something and was caught not once, but twice for DWI (driving without priviliges). The first time she got off with a slap on the wrist (whereas in my case I got a $300 fine and 2 days SILD). The second time was her quaint little visit to jail. It was one thing that she made the judge wait because she's got to be oh so fashionably late but he threw the book at the spoiled little princess when she faked a illness and got the warden to let her out of jail. And the world cheered. She freaked and cried for her parents, they started getting all the lawyers they could, and promised her a party as soon as she got out. I for one am glad that the judge put his foot down and let her know that not even she's above the law.

So... is there anyone else who has the opinion that the "Microsoft Office format as an ISO standard" is a great idea?
If you do have any arguments, I'd be more than happy to hear them since I've always been in need of solid arguments regarding that issue with EVE game mechanics.
So, gimme your best, thanks :)

Bah, there's too much Microsoft hate, and it clouds the subject. Are there problems with OOXML? yes, but one must admit that it is a step in the right direction. To say OOXML only has criticism and no merit is to be blinded by Microsoft hate.

it's conceptually flawed. it shouldn't be an ISO.
nothing to do with MS hate.
