I'm pretty new to EVE, less than a month old with 1.3-1.4 mil SP going. I plan to get into PvP soon, and was looking for any advice on small, fast ships in pvp.
I saw the skill training for Interceptors, and the description says they are fast! Any advice on what skills really help a fast ship in pvp? I understand my best role in a group might be electronic warfare, and I'm happy with that. I just want to get my skills to a good point before advertising that I'm looking for pvp :D
Also what's the benefit of training ship skills up, besides advancing to the next skill. Like does Frigates V give you a bonus over Frigates IV?
Thanks! ----------------------------------------------- No it's pronounced Chret, the 'S' is silent. |

Small fast ships tend to be very vulnerable to stasis webifiers. Be aware of that and you can survive pretty well.
Navigation skills are helpful in making ships faster and more maneuverable. A lot of small fast ships have very limited fitting resources. Skills that help with fitting are good to have. Interceptors in particular have short targeting ranges, so training skills to boost that is good.
All ships have benefits based on the level of ship skill you have, so besides being a prerequisite for tech 2 frigates, Frigate V gives you better performance from all frigates of that race.

Good to know! Are small, fast ships useful in pvp? Assuming they are with a gang/fleet anyway. More useful than just frigates? ----------------------------------------------- No it's pronounced Chret, the 'S' is silent. |

Edited by: Akaine Harga on 08/10/2007 21:36:40 It depends on how soon you want the ship and what exactly you want to do with it.
Interceptors are god tacklers but need plenty of skills to use, while frigates and destroyers can be pretty fast as well but for other, i'd say, more general purposes.
The main difference between a small ship and a bigger one are: smaller signature (smaller it is more time is needed for a bigger ship to target you), and high velocity which gives three advantages:
- harder/impossible to track your ship for slow turrets; - you can position/move your ship much quicker than bigger ships giving them less time to shoot or target you. - there is a damage penalty against a target's velocity, faster you move less damage you receive from enemy hits;
A good ship in the beginning of the game would be probably a destroyer, I'd recommend Cormorant or Catalyst for the start, but this depends on personal preferences with guns and modules anyway. Here I was speaking about speeds from 500m/s to 800m/s using standard propulsion means (afterburners), which is the safest way.
Sry, I have to run I'll try to write more a few hours later... ;)

You need good tanking, fitting, and navigation skills to fly interceptors. And by good I mean level IV at least and level V preferably. Interceptors depend on their speed to keep alive, so it's pretty obvious why you'd need to max out navigation skills. Tanking skills will make you a bit tougher to kill. Fitting on small ships is very tight so you need the fitting skills. Plan on training things like Navigation V, Engineering V, Electronics V.

If you are going to specialize initially in one race's ships, which race?

Alright, read carefully, you can be "ok" in pvp with next to no skills but you need a few things:
- a corp that accepts new players and helps them, you are going to lose ships before you get a chance to actually get a point on someone for the first time, count on it. - people (your corp prolly) that will take you with them in a gang/fleet, and listen to them (you probably should). - a set of the very basic skills, I'll give you a setup of what I use, the only thing you need level 5 for engineering, it's a basic anyways. Next to that there are ofcourse frigates of other factions that can do about the same.
- Rifter - t1 1mn mwd - t1 web - t1 scram - t1 small nos - 3x t1 overdrive - 3x t1 125mm guns of some sort, I have railguns but the bonus is for something else
you can get this setup for less than a mil anywhere probably
Get a tool to experimentate with ship fittings etc, I got EFT dunno where from anymore.
Next to that it's all experience on what to do when and whyand how and when not etc.

If you have a look at the skill prerequisites for the Agony PVP-BASIC classes (click the banner in my signature), that will give you an idea of skills that are useful for moving in a small, fast ship.
Interceptors tend not to deal as much damage as tech1 frigates, but they are almost impossible to kill when flown by a skilled pilot. A tech1 frigate makes a better electronic warfare platform than an interceptor, interceptors tend not to have enough midslots to be much use with ewar.

Be aware that this is only applicable against missiles.

...unless you count transverse velocity vs guns. Right? I'm learning!
Thanks everyone. Will have to get that Warp Drive Operation skill up! We'll see if I'm skilled enough to pilot Interceptors. :D ----------------------------------------------- No it's pronounced Chret, the 'S' is silent. |

I'd reccommend you try to pvp in a small gang with a normal t1 frigate as a tackler before using your interceptor. The ships will have pretty much the same role, but a interceptor will cost you a lot more than a t1 frigate and that can put a big dent in your wallet for a new player. Tacklers tend to get targeted a lot and without pvp experience you will most likely be blown up pretty soon. So it can be smart to get some experience in a expendable ship while you get the skills to fly a interceptor properly.
