A corpmate of mine has a rather unfortunate name which starts with 'raven'. This has not been a problem for him up to now, but we did the Agony basic course over the weekend, and the first time a real Raven came through a gate, and the order "Target Raven" was issued, 6 people in the class targeted and blew up my corpmate's frigate - one of them even went after his pod. We all saw the funny side of this, after all, it was a new situation for most of us, everyone is entitled to make a few mistakes, and frigates are cheap.
However, we were wondering if this was enough justification to try a petition to get his name changed - he has too many skill points to want to reroll the character. What does the community think? Has anyone heard of a character name being changed for this reason? Should he get used to warping to a safe spot whenever a Raven turns up?

You should have been calling the name of the raven pilot anyway. If it's happened already, just send a corp mail?

As for changing the name, while I see where you're coming from, i'm afraid not much can be done about it, names can only be changed if they're offensive.

Yep! Rofl!
Your mates shouldnt even have gangmates on their overviews, too, so theres a good point. It wont affect him as the people around him learn to fly. He'll stick it out.

Edited by: Loc Maythan on 15/10/2007 11:12:33 People were instructed to only have targets on the overview - one of the pre-course documents describes precisely how the overview should be set up - but it seems that some people had their own preferences.
I would agree that calling targets by name is more reliable than calling by type - after all, 4 Ravens might have come through, and you would want everyone concentrating on the same one. And I suspect that is what would have happened if multiple instances of a ship type came through, but in this case there was only one Raven - well, two, if you count my corpmate ;-)
Maybe if I can convince a GM that I find the word 'raven' offensive - it's against my religion as a member of the Church of Christ the Ornithologist - we can get it changed ;-)

Heh, I got in on one of those killmails! =) The poor guy came under fire 3-4 IIRC.
The problem wasn't just that his name started with "Raven," but that he would get disconnected. When he came back, he was not yet ganged and so showed up on our overviews. I do remember the fleet commander saying "Raven is friendly! Do NOT target Raven!" but in a fleet of 30 frigates some are bound to not pay attention.

As said, names will only be changed if they are offensive, and not on request. Even then they will be changed to "Caldari Citizen #12452" or something like that. So I guess your corp mate is stuck with his name...

Hah! Great story.
But I'm sorry to say that we don't change names on request unless they are might right after character creation because you named yourself Ucaris rather than Icarus and took a while to notice it. Otherwise it enables people to hide from their reputation, which is all you really have in EvE.

He is in South Africa and has a somewhat eccentric connection, as do all our South African members. We had a good laugh about it afterwards - his corp title even before the course was something like "Laser magnet" ;-)

It's worth a try. I think they're open to name changes for good reasons (yours might not be) within the first month or so. After that it's sorta considered like trying to change your identity to escape infamy. ----------- Support fixing the EVE UI |

First off I LOLed. Second you need new corp mates, they should have sense enough somemone on your sides not going to be primary but that fat raven on the OVERVIEW <--- keyword is the called target. Maybe some training on over settings is needed.

Seeing as this is a PVP-Basic class I think flying with new pilots is somewhat unavoidable. Seeing as it is just that the basics... mistakes will be made no matter how many times the instructor repeats material. Its accepted. Also many times as a gang is warping into a target the instructor may prepare them telling them to target the ship type if its the only one and why we are targeting that ship. (ie. Target the Raven and place all your ewar on it, kill the thorax) It gives students a better idea of why were doing something and insight into what the instructor and gang leads are thinking instead of Kill person x then person y. As far as setting up the overview correctly. Some students may choose not too or found there to be a bit of information overload and missed something. In which case they are now Alumni of the course and can retake the course as often as they like for FREE.

p.s you should have not even had him on your overview

Except people buy and sell characters all the time, effectively changing their names. Still, if you're unwilling to do this (and I do understand why), how about removing the ability to sort overview by character name?

Dude, live life as an 'A' name for a while. It's almost comical how fast you get primaried in a fleet fight. There are things you can do to help mitigate (extra tank, try to stay at range), but in the end it's still pretty damned annoying.

But alts are ok.
Next MMO I play, my name begins with Z. Because in Eve, Aaron Aadvark isn't sneaking up on ANYBODY. But Zap Brannagan probably will.
Gaven might get you if you're in Jita or Dodixie. And you have $30 monitor and GFX card. And you're off making a cup of tea while your drones finish the mission for you.
