I was just looking at the Retriever in Eve Fitting Tool, as I'll be able to fly one in a couple of days, and was noticing it's defence is quite a bit less than the Osprey I currently fly. My Osprey has, like, 1400 shields and sometimes gets drained to half by the time I take out the wave of 4 NPC frigates that spawn in the 0.5 space I mine in. The Retriever has, like, 450 shields and 700 or so armor. Will it be able to take the heat? Am I missing something here? ------------------- 4 8 15 16 23 42 108 |

To put it nicely a Triever is made out of Papier Macher. It mught just split in halves if you look at it the wrong way. It it far from ideal if you are solo mining in system with slightly dangerous spawn. Get a fried to mine with you in a Exhumer(thoses can take the heat and have bigger drone bay too).

Boost your drone skills so you are using T2 lights and you'll notice the difference.

When I was mining in 0.5 systems with my retriever the rats would normally pound through the shields and into the armor.
As per the other poster, up those drone skills so your lights or meds drones are doing more dmg.
I also put an small armor rep in one of the lows. This would let me hold on a bit longer on station for the drones to do the work. Also once the rats were killed I could self repair in space.
Since staying on site and continuing to mine is the primary job.
You could also put a small shield booster or rat specific hardener in the one mid slot; but I used the surveyor mod there.
Hope that helps?

Thanks for the tips. I was looking at the armor repairer as well. ------------------- 4 8 15 16 23 42 108 |

Support skills are your friends. Shield skills will make that shield last a few seconds more. Mechanic skills will give just a bit more armor and structure before one has to buy another ship. A shield rig puts just that much more time before that paper-armor starts getting chewed up. All of these give the drones more time to do their job. If you've got some decent drone skills as well, that delicate armor won't even get touched.
For even more fun, mine with a buddy....double the targets for rats to go after, double the drones on station to pop rats.... Plus a few fleet bonuses for extra shield and mining yield. and if all else fails, you'll have someone to talk to while the Strip Miners do their thing. _______________________________

Yeah, I have at least Level 3 for most all of my general support skills. I was planning on bringing Mechanic and Hull Upgrades up to 4, along with certain shield skills higher. For some reason I wasn't even considering putting a rig on it. :P Not much experience with rigs as, 'till now, it hasn't been much worth it for me to get them. ------------------- 4 8 15 16 23 42 108 |

Rigs are pretty pricey to put on a Retriever, but if you can find/make one for cheap, it wouldn't hurt to have it. Quite frankly, I've only had a Retriever in structure once. That was with 2 seperate spawns coming after me at the same time. (Blasted macro-miner warped off, leaving me extra rats) I was experimenting with different fittings, and found out that putting a Damage Control II on a Retriever just wasn't that good an idea. At least it was a fast repair job with repair modules.
With drones, more is better. 5 lights will chew through rats faster than 3 lights and a medium. (and are a little cheaper to replace if you lose track of one) If you can run T2, they'll rip through rat spawns like a bandsaw.
0.5 ratting is possible with a Retriever, 5 light drones and a civilian shield booster. Been there, done that. _______________________________

The retriever has a short lock range so by the time you lock a rat to focus the drones on he is right on top of you. I put a sensor booster on mine in the low so I can target further out. 5 T2 Hobgoblins will tear through 3 Serpentis spawns quich especially if you can target them while they are further out.

Yeah, I've noticed Rigs are pricey, but I chose one and added up the cost to make it, once. Blueprint is like 110k, the parts added up to a million or two. If prices for rigs are still in the 20 Mil + range, it will definitely be better for me to make it. ;) ------------------- 4 8 15 16 23 42 108 |

I use a smaller armor repper II, and a capacitor power relay, with 2 Vespa Is, and 1 Acolyte I. I havent had to warp save for a random faction spawn. Make sure to turn off the strip miners to keep the repper running longer while your drones kill the spawns. My 3 little drones deal with anything I have come across. Ill have a hulk in less than a week though so then I will get to upgrade to 2 layers of cardboard (the hulk has an awesome tank!)

Yea but that rig is still worth 20 mill + as you could sell it for that. Rigs on a Retriever deffo not worth it imo. Just plough on and get a Covetor or Hulk and spend your cash on that.

Right, but if I made my own to use, I still consider that I made 18 or 19 Mil, if I'm right in how much the parts cost, since I didn't have to buy it. But if I do go that route, and I was right about the cost, I might as well build 5 more while I'm at it and sell them. :) ------------------- 4 8 15 16 23 42 108 |

Edited by: Tinker1947 on 16/10/2007 13:06:25 If you are aiming long term Mining, stick your retriever in lvl 0.9's no rats there the belts have roids that will last the 2 cycle it take to fill the cargo hold (T2 Expander x 2) and wait your skill training for a Hulk, there another world for mining and well worth the wait 13000m3 cargo space and 3 strips working, plus the shield hit points are 2000+ which allows for 0.5 mining and you can make a cuppa tea while the rats attack...

I used to mine in 0.5 with my retreiver solo until I was able to use the Covetor then hulk. I kept a armor repper in low and I dont recall having to ever warp out. Even got 3 Faction spawns and one faction implant outta one spawn which was funny. Ratting in a retreiver.

Back in my Retriever days, a shield booster was helpful. You want an MLU in the low to make use of those strip miners, and the other slot is likely to be a co-processor to make it all fit. Armor repairer if you can manage is fine.
T2 light combat drones are the key. Get your Drones skill to 5, and take a few levels of Drone Interfacing. Other drone support skills wouldn't hurt. They can kill 0.5 rats before they can do much damage to you. You may have to shut off the strip miners for a little bit to run the shield booster until they're dealt with. Be aligned to a station or other object to warp out just in case.

5 T2 light drones will make short work of any 0.5 spawn. Just make sure you pick the right drone damage type for the rats you will be facing.
Yes, the covetor will handle it better with its larger drone bay and increased HP; but thats many weeks additional training. T2 light drones are a fairly quick solution in comparison.

get a small armor rep. Named if you can't fit a T2. And, try out a 50 or 100 armor plate. I was able to mine in .4 and not warp out that much. Just when 3 cruiser rat's popped in. And, like the rest said, T2 drones are your friend. They will eat thru any rat in .5 and up.
