From the Crucible 1.1 Patch Notes:
- The storage capacity on all Planetary Interaction storage pins has been increased from 5000m3 to 12000m3 so that it may better compete with the space port.
So 12,000 cubes is a lot more than they were but I'm assuming they still use 700MW of power. More useful, no doubt. I need to go back and look at my process flow and see if it makes sense to start using them.

For casual PI, I could see this helping quite a bit. On extraction planets, I might now be able to reduce my P0-P1 processors by one and add a silo for storage. This typically doesn't do you any good, but since my main PI toon likes to travel a bit, it allows me to shuffle some materials to silos until I can get back to the system to export to the CO. I can restart the extractors and shift the materials on-planet with at least some efficiency this way (maybe, have to sit down and play witht it). |

My P1->P2 factory planet now has 80k of storage which will allow me to only have to fill it up once each week instead of once every 3 days. 20 factories and 4 ports are now 16 factories, 4 ports, and 4 silos.
I looked over some of my P2->P4 factory lay-outs and the hard p4s can now run up to 111 hours without visits instead of 74 or something like that. Still limited to 100 hours on the port though. (putting them all in the silo would make it hard to move them all out in a timely way.) |

Extraction planets are typically maxed on power.
Factory planets are typically maxed on CPU.
So on an extraction planet, I don't see a lot of use except as was mentioned in providing a way to store materials while you are not able to use the CO, ie out of system.
For factory planets, for every LP you can now have a storage facility paired with it to double the amount of material you can import. This could allow you to possibly double the amount of material you are able to import, and possibly double the time between loadings. Could be a boon for P1 to P3 process. |

Meh.... not enough to make a difference really.
10,000 m3 on a launchpad 12,000 m3 on a storage pin thingie.
... Marginally better, but only in extraction planets which work like this:
Extractor -> storage -> processing -> launchpad
Will save a bit of cash in that case. IIRC the cooldown on an expedited transfer of 10,000 m3 (assuming you need to launch the stuff) would be about 8 hours without upgraded links (but thankfully we have that 5x link capacity change that makes it more bearable). Might be off though as I only use expedited transfers in planets without a CO.

Do people actually do this? I usually just loop everything back through my launchpad. |

The cooldown is still 8 hours.
And the ESPL path would be helpful for those who don't visit their planets except when the launchpad is full. Heck, you could do E->S->P->L->S to really extend your time. Use the first storage to buffer your extractors. Empty your launchpad into the Second storage now and then to keep filling up the pad. Then, when you come to unload, you ship up, transfer, ship up again. |

For Production Planets this is priceless
[S]---[LP]---[S]
I now just need to upgrade the link to lvl 8 or 9 to get a 5 min cull down for the Expedited Transfer. 9 High Tech and 3 LPs and you almost reach the max CPU limit. Plenty of power grid left tho. |

Oh, they're larger now? larger than launchpads? for the same cost? I don't think I would change my planets around, but I could see at least a use for them now. PI Profit Calculator: calculates your profits and taxes of any PI product depending on how you built them! |

Still basically useless on extraction planets (which are PG-constrained). If they had also dropped the PG requirement by half, then it would be a clear winner over just using a LP.
For factory planets, not sure. I generally run either 2 LP 20 AIF setups (36 hours, P1-P3) or 3 LP 18 AIF setups (50-54 hours, P1-P2 or P2-P3). If they had made the size of the storage unit 16-20k m3, then it would be a much clearer winner over just using a LP.
