Edited by: Meiers on 17/10/2007 13:10:59 Oi,
My salvager has optimal range @ 5.000m. Does that mean better chances of salvaging at that range?

It shouldn't have a falloff at all, meaning that anything within 5,000m works, and anything outside of 5,000m does not.
With turrets, it's the same way. As you get up to your optimal, range is not affecting your aim at all. As you get up to the sum total of your optimal range plus your falloff range, your aim gets worse, and as you move further out to the sum of your optimal range plus two times your falloff, you get to the point where you can't hit at all.
Of course, firing from three meters would be hard too because as you get closer, the relative speed difference between you and your target matters more and more for your aim; moving further out makes it easier to track a quickly-moving target.
But of course, even modules that don't shoot have "optimal ranges." They tend to lack falloff ranges though, so "maximum range" would be a better term than optimal range for them.

If you're interested in increasing the chance to salvage, you can:
* Run multiple salvage modules on one wreck * Train your salvaging skill higher * Put salvaging rigs on your ship
Note that salvage is pre-determined. You won't fail to get a piece of "good" salvage by lack of skills. It will just take you longer (more failed cycles before the successful cycle). In the end, what you get is what you get. A better chance to salvage really means that you can salvage a field of wrecks in less time.

Also bear in mind that Elite rat wrecks, T2 wrecks and such require Salvage 3 in order to even try to salvage, but those wrecks are the source for T2 salvage. _______________________________

Does the rats level have any effect on the salvage?

Salvage loot is fairly random, but will vary with what Faction the rat belonged to as well as ship size. Small frigates may drop just a single item or a bit of scrap metal, while a player's dreadnaught wreckage can drop hundreds of units of salvage parts. (It's rather large after all)
Quality of the salvage depends on whether it's a common ship that was popped or not. T1 drops T1 salvage. T2, Elite Faction, and such tend to drop T2 salvage. (Still no guarantees of anything) T2 ships are more difficult to salvage and require Salvage level 3 to even try. _______________________________
