i was looking through the orange box website (not gonna buy it and not gonna play the episodes until ep3 is done and they make a new box) and i came up with some videos of this game called PORTAL which seemed interesting to me...
any1 tried it? is it good? long/short? or should i just skip it?

It's only a few hours long, but those few hours are exquisitely paced. It has replayability (even more so when user maps start appearing), and one of the best endings to a game i've ever seen.
It's just such a fun experiance, if you want to test to see if you like it, google for narbacular drop, its the testbed project by the people who made portal. This will give you an idea on the play mechanics to see if you like it.

Yea, Portal's short, but OMG I'd pay for it twice.
I haven't enjoyed a game of this calibre in a long time ^^

tbh Portal is so good it makes me want to hitch a ride to the Valve studios and make babies with Gabe Newell.

Try the Zero Punctuation: The Orange Box review. At 3:30 of the 4:30 review he goes on about Portal. That should tell you all you want to know.

Portal is a project made by a team of just hired right out school students about a year ago.
The original vision was made at digi-pen, in Redmond Washington and was tittled Narbacular Drop. After winning some award Valve hired the whole team! and my classmates had a party and got very drunk :P
and now right out of their (god damn) junior year, they have 80k a year jobs. and with their first project coming out so good, I can only speculate that they are getting a raise :P
if you feel like playing it while you wait check it out :) http://www.digipen.edu/main/Gallery_Games_2004#Narbacular_Drop ----------------------------------- I'm working my way through college target CCP need...more room... |

Edited by: Buxaroo on 18/10/2007 13:51:13 I gotta say you are missing out bigtime by not buying the orange box. If you don't have HL2 its even more of a great deal. But portal is great. Simply genius. I usually don't care for puzzle games much (well you know what I mean). And the game is quite intuitive as well. Only once did I have to ask Lofty for advice on how to get out of stage 19 .
Oh and those little turrets with that little girl voice is downright fuggin' creepy!
My only gripe is now after trying to do the last level is that I am getting a "game engine bug".
!!!!!!!!!!!!!POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT, ADVERT YOUR EYES AND GENERAL BUG WHINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am getting crashes from loading a saved gamed when I am on last level (I am assuming its last) where you have 2 big ventilation fans on either side of you. I seem to get the crash bug right after firing a portal, sometimes its right after I jump through to get to other side and maybe shoot another one and I crash. I am wondering if it's a bug in the saved file. I haven't tried running and earlier lvl yet to see if it crashed on another level.
Not to mention all the crashes I get with TF2. One of my corp mates says that Source games are very buggy if there are any kind of memory problems. Gah, it's probably hardware related but TF2 and Portal are the only games effected or crashing.

I'll take a guess and say you've never seen a picture of Gabe?

The game actually goes for a fair bit after those ventilation fans.
I don't know of any game that won't have problems if you've got memory errors. When a programmer assigns '0x4F' to a memory address, they tend to assume that they'll get '0x4F' back later. If there's memory errors, that won't happen, and there's little a programmer can do about it.
Go get yourself Memtest and see what happens.

The funny thing is that just the Portal gun would have made it a great game and most game developers would just added more test chambers. But Valve went totally outside the box and added the plot, voice acting and cake that made it so memorable.
