What is this thread about? When creating an IPO, grammar matters a lot more than you might believe. Unless you're going to go the DragonRiderTao route, using such god-awful English that it actually becomes a selling point for your shares, you want your IPO to be as well-formatted as possible.
There are two ways people generally use lists. The most common type of list, an itemized list, is either enumerated or separated by carriage returns, bullets, or hyphens. An itemized list can look like this:
Quote: - Option 1 - Option 2 - Option 3
The second type of list I'll review is one that many people don't recognize as a list, yet still is. A definition list is usually used to separate topics or content into categories, not unlike the following:
Quote: Overview blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
Body blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
Conclusion blah blah foo bar harbl
What are you getting at? A common mistake too many people make is not using parallel structure in lists. If you begin some list items with verbs, and others with nouns, and end random items with question marks, your list will look like ass.
Here is an example of a list with proper parallel structure:
Quote:
- Speculative Bubbles - Real-Estate Bubbles - Stock Market Bubbles - Other Economic Phenomenon That Result in Market Crashes
Notice every item in this list begins with a noun except the final item. This can be okay if it LOOKS okay, if it FEELS okay to you. Just read it, you'll see what I mean. If you must use a non-parallel element, try to put it at the bottom of your list. It looks and feels best there.
Here is an example of a list without parallel structure:
Quote:
1. Diversify in Products 2. Logistics and Sales in Several Regions 3. More Capital
Item 1 begins with a verb, 2 with a noun, and 3 with an adverb. This list is nonsense. Don't do this.
Here's an example of a properly parallel definition list:
Quote:
Target Market blah blah blah blah blah blah
Target Capital Goal Blah blah blah blah blah blah
Target Start Date blah blah blah blah blah
Notice each item begins with the word 'target'. This isn't always necessary, until you have a large number of items all beginning with the same word. If it looks right, it probably is, and if it looks wrong, it's probably wrong. If I threw in a "Conclusion" list item, this list would look wrong. It would have lost the parallel element of the word "Target" at the beginning of every item. (Maybe you could fit it at the end of the list? Try it out, man!)
Here is an example of a non-parallel definition list:
Quote:
Introduction blah blah blah blah blah blah
Why you should invest blah blah blah blah blah
Who are you anyway? Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
Finally, blah blah blah blah blah blah
If you don't see why this one is wrong, you need to get the DragonRiderTao Style Guide to Technical Writing (ISBN#31337).
Why the F should I care what you think? You shouldn't care what I think unless I'm one of your target investors. You should care what your target investors will think. Whether they realize it or not, when you use non-parallel structure in lists, the investors in this board will sub-consciously lower their opinion of you and your badly-formatted IPO.
After all, if you don't care enough to write a proper proposal, why should you care enough to babysit my isk?

I am not English. In fact English is my third language. I find this post offensive, because you are directly abusing another member of the community who is also not English. If you have an issue with another person please use another forum or format. I find the incessant ragging and belittling of certain people tiresome and not deserving of this forum.
If you intended to provide us with a lesson in writing a well formatted proposal then do so, and do it in a an elegant, intelligent, and tactful manner. This post is rubbish and belongs in CAOD.

Edited by: Rhiraven on 18/10/2007 19:21:04 You do realize that parallel structure in lists is applicable to every language, right?
Also, I'd like to know who you think I'm belittling. The tuna fish thing was just me being silly, and I think LaVista realizes that, judging from his response...
edit: You know what? Screw you, McRuder. I'm not here to make friends with idiots. I'm soooooooo sorry I offended you. You can disregard the rest of this otherwise-apologetic post. Like non-English speakers are some kind of minority you want me to tiptoe around you? GTFO

Your post is more offensive than his, and you get it all wrong.

One troll can kill an entire thread on this board? **** you, Jaques
I will say this....in general we do a great job of moderating ourselves around here. I do think that it was excessive to wipe half the thread.
BUT.
I don't agree with your response here Rhiraven. I know your ticked off, but we do have to deal with the Mods from time to time, and this is not the right way to do that.
I liked what you originally wrote, and I think it had value.
Consulting, IPO Template, and Stock/Bond definitions.

He didn't have to remove every part of my thread that MIGHT offend SOMEONE, especially when DragonRiderTao has always been notoriously good-humored about that kind of thing
And cutting out the word ass? Sorry mod, but if it's not a filtered word you shouldn't be cutting it out of my post.
