So I am sure more then a few of you know that Star Trek Online has gone F2P with an Optional Subscription.
I do not know much about this game but I have heard it is more WoW in Space then like EVE Online. It has been considered a Flop by most people but it seems that their is some excitement over new content that came out in the F2P Update.
Is anyone going to give this game a test run or already has and wants to share their Opinions.
Anything really, Random F2P STO Thread commence.

Cannot really say much about this game. Rather would not install this again. After all, i have eve. Pretty harsh mistress she is, but rewarding the experience is, very.
Just my 0.02 euros.
PS: Dont waste your bandwidth on it, you will regret it. Seriously. |

So many of you are hung up on EVE as the end all of MMOs.
STO is actually pretty good. The missions are varied and interesting with elements of both space combat and ground combat. The charatcer creator is tops.
If you try it expecting EVE, you will be disappointed. Not all MMO games use EVE like mechanics nor should they. G’ąG’ąG’ąCargo Pilots Unite!!!G’ąG’ąG’ą https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=668132&#post668132 |

I guess it's sorta like WOW in space, but Wow is more free roaming and is better in many ways. . .
Instead of just blanket insulting it which most people are likely to do, I will try to describe some things I liked:
As a moderate trek fan i really enjoyed flying around in my fav trek ships, and I like the directional damage that ships take [ie. if your shields are shot out on the left you can fly tactically to face the stronger shields]
I also like the variety of the ship->ground combat-> ship combat in missions. Experienceing this makes me long for ground combat or station combat inside EVE even more. There is at least one city you can run around and fight in which is quite impressive imo, [unlike the regular towns/stations] and heavilly populated with npc crowds in a way that makes me wish other games would do something similar. By now I expect there have been improvements beyond that.
Some silly things in the game got me obsessed for a while, like farming rare tribbles and selling them to other players at crazy prices lol, but that enthusiasm died out as soon as everyone in game learned how to do it too.
But the missions became very repetative, esp. after maxing all my characters. And progress through the game is very linear, esp. with the ship types as you get more powerful ones and toss out the old ones which become totally useless for anything, quite unlike EVE.
It also felt rather claustrophobic with the different sectors being obvious box shaped instanced rooms to fly space ships inside.
In the end I can't bring myself to play it anymore, but since it is free now there is propably no harm in trying it until you get bored. . . and comeback to EVE:)

You have to admit that some of the missions had surprise/unexpected twists to them.
And STO has the one thing that EVE lacks sorely.....personally cusomized ships. G’ąG’ąG’ąCargo Pilots Unite!!!G’ąG’ąG’ą https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=668132&#post668132 |

True, I loved being able to put my own logo onto my ships, and changing their physical appearance within a set number of configurations-- similar to T3 cruisers. I was dissapointed though that due to fundamental game mechanics, the smaller, lower level ships have no role at all if you can fly something bigger.
Again, leaving the ship and doing a ground mission with pulse rifles etc., then returning to ship and fighting your way back home in space was a refreshing change from being always stuck in a pod [or CQ]. Some of the missions had fun twists yes, and I always loved killing borg for some reason.
Hitting the level cap came pretty quick tho, and then there was little else to do. Players can design and share their own missions afaik, which might be an amazing experience. Unfortunately for me this was introduced just as I had tired and moved on, so I missed it.

Been playing it for about a week and its a good free game. Still wouldn't pay for it and it is still silly easy to burn through all of the content but free makes it better. Nice for when doing a pos bash. |

Level caps seems to be a game killer and MMO makers need to get away from this gaming model IMO.

If you kinda like Star Trek STO can be fun in small doses, if you are the type of Star Trek fan that would have apoplexy because the amount of fruit on the counter in the mess hall of Voyager isn't perfect you should give it a miss.
The game play can be repetitive and you can level absurdly fast and leave yourself with nothing to do, its also a miss match of cannon with everything from every episode and film layered together with stuff Cryptic made up.
But some of the missions are really, really good with well written stories and a variety of different things to do. This is balanced by the ones where you have to go and scan some anomalies and other rubbish. For a bit of fun in some spare moments of your spare time it can be good, just don't expect it to be a full time replacement for another MMO. |

Space combat is fun, well for a while anyway. Now that its free I can finally get some semi decent space combat fix that doesn't require massive blobs.
The rest of the game is boring and borderline waste. KOTOR has better land based missions/combat and neither game has any kind of economy that compares to EVE. However if your short pressed for time and don't care about economy its not bad for free. You could do worse I suppose.
Now if CCP could somehow take the STO space combat, roll that in this game, I would sign up for a lifetime sub here. |

Does it have anything that records your kills, losses and assists like the EVE Killboards. An accessible Leaderboard where you can look up your and other players stats. I do love permanent records in games to remember what you accomplished. |

Sort of, the game is more of a tribute to every era of Star Trek than something with a cohesive time line. Players that really like TNG can grab a TNG era ship and uniforms. Same for the other Series and films. |

I read the forums when the change was first announced after I got a link off of Massively. Most seemed happy because the game was pretty much dead from low pop and they were still getting the F2P Gold Standard. From what I hear Stations that were pretty much empty are now teaming with players.
Whether that holds or not is another story. |

Problem with STO is when they released it. It was no way near done. It was also sucked balls when I done the 2 week trail. Now I am only playing (Just started and it's free) I have noticed they have improved it alot.
I think the Manager at the company are morons and could of waited a little longer to be like this than failing at the start. |

STO is a game that I'm trying really hard to like. If it were any other IP I would've called it crap and never looked back. But because it's Star Trek I enjoy it. It's a terrible multiplayer game and a decent single player game. Social aspects of this game are almost non existent. Casual conversations are rare and there's little reason to join a corp or participate in fleets. Nearly everything can be done solo due to easy content or ******** AI for NPC's.
Ship combat is fun IMO. Surface away missions can get a bit repetitive. PvP in this game is laughable at best. Worse PvP than WoW and that's really saying something. Like my post? Made you laugh or think? Maybe even offended or nausiated you? Then give a Like. They're free and oh so easy to give. |

Installed and played for a day, seems like a very nice, good and cool game especially for an ST fan. I am an ST fan yet deleted it after a day, why? too much microtransactions and I knew at some point I would get sucked in a start spending real money on crap, also the company does not give me any faith nor does the playerbase. But main reason I would suggest one should avoid this game is because of microtransactions and the fact that it is NOT just cosmetic stuff they sell, also if you get into it you willopt for a sub and looking at their latest patch in changes to racial bonuses made me cringe.
If you got the money to blow (even thoughit says F2P,) I can reccomend it, if not and you noticed this game because of the word "Free" in "F2P" I'd say stay away. |

Microtransactions are the whole point of the F2P payment model, devs don't run F2P games out of the goodness of their hearts and they have to get income from somewhere. You can get away with the free stuff in STO anyway, the ships you get in game are fine for pottering about and doing some PVE. If you have loot envy and feel jealous because somebody has a shiny ship from the C-store it might be a problem I suppose. |
