Ok this was just a thought and maybe some of you can add to this but I have noticed there is a huge outcry from the playerbase about the carrier/mom "nerf" and various other changes that have been viewed to be negative.
No doubt training all those skills to perfect the carrier as it is was a huge investment for many. And for those of us who were halfway or days away from a carrier were kind of dissapointed to find out that the vision they had for their ship has been ruined. This goes for any ship really.
I am suggesting that sometime in the near future, after the new patch is released, CCP should allow all players a one time Re-Spec of thier entire skill points or at least, half. The entire game will be shifted to encourage more specilization and making some skills appear to be a waste of time.
The game is being changed constantly and its hard to keep up the skill training sometimes trying to learn new skills. Those that have been investing in NOS/Vampire boats and "solo" carriers and other ships have been cheated. They train skills to use the ship as it is, then it is changed and areas where they focused more training on.
Dont forget CCP has stated that they are the ones who led us to do this and they are sorry and have apologized.
But apologies dont take back the years it took veterans to perfect thier skills in ceartain areas. They have to make this up to us all...
As players i think we should really consider this and maybe formulate something that would work. We could keep out existing skillpoints but just be allowed to be refocused in more specilized areas since the game is making a huge shift into specilization with the debut of the new patch.
It could be just a one time deal and it would be purely by choice. Most are happy where they are and wouldnt change a thing, but the experienced and intermediate players are whats keeping this game alive and thier time is valuable as all skills are based on time. When the specilizations are changed,a players time is suddenly a waste of time.
Maybe it could be worked into a storyline somehow? Make it part of a trail of missions you would have to complete in empire to prove yourself.
So whos with me!?!? RE-SPEC! RE-SPEC!
Or Something?

Sorry Respecs ruin games not improve them. If you trained for something specific and they change it, oh well. Train something else.
It not like City of Hereos that you get a redo everytime something new comes along, live with the mistakes, learn by them, or sell you char for isk before the "nerf"...

If CCP were ever to allow a character respec, the "vets" would be even further ahead than they seem to be now. I have lost count of the the things I have trained over the years, only to see them subsequently nerfed .. and sometimes become flavour of the month again.
If I could respec, however, I am not sure that I would. I like being a "jack of all trades".

This isnt a bad suggestion. What instead of the skill points we could have an attribute respec. Most of you say a skillpoint respec would ruin the game for the younger players because the veterans would be given a huge boost. I didnt think about it like that but now i can see how that would be a disaster.
So then what about an attribute re-spec?

If they do this once, they would have to do it every single time that something gets either nerfed or boosted (a boost is a nerf to everything else, in relative terms)
This would completely change the character of Eve, and would be a bad move in my opinion.

I agree with you in EVE's case. A total respec or even half is just...no.
However, reallocation of skill points does not ruin a game. Ever play Diablo II? Careful character planning and years of gameplay could be ruined by a single solitary misclick. There was no option to reallocate even a single point ever. I remember one character I accidentally misallocated when they were level 24 or so. Had to delete & start over.
But I think if you get carrier V, and then they ruin carriers? You should get the skill points back to reallocate to other skills that are Perception primary and Willpower secondary.
It's not a carrier/mothership "nerf" it's ruination. And I can't even fly one; never will if the go through with it. --

I dont like the idea of a total skill respec. But the idea holds some promise if you combine it with some sort of skill loss.
I think it would be nice if you could "unlearn" a skill, and recieve half of the skill points invested in the "unlearned" skill to put in other skills.
Say for example that you have trained Anchoring lvl 5, but determine you will never use that skill at lvl 5. "Unlearning" the anchoring lvl 5 to lvl 4 will give you half of the skillspoints back to imiediately reinvest in other skills.
The loss of skillpoints would make you think twice, before unlearning a skill, but you would have the option, if you could accept the loss in skillpoints. At least gives you the option to undo previous training decision errors, with skill point loss though.
Just an idea......

Because of the format of the game, skill re-spec is completely out-of-place. For one, you should still just go with what you wanted to do from the beginning. Who cares if Carriers are nerfed or different now? Chances are that it's because they were overpowering or not functioning in the intended fashion of the designers, which means a "fix" was necessary. This also tells me that you were NOT moving towards carrier because you actually liked the idea of being a carrier, or felt attached to that idea somehow... you wanted to play carrier because you thought they were more powerful than anything else. That's lame on more levels than I can describe.
As for actual re-specs... have you ever looked at the game's skill progression? No, I'm serious, have you ever even opened the skill window for a moment and looked at how the game works? I don't think you have. EVERYTHING about a character is based on TIME INVESTMENT, not skill points. Skill points are a seemingly arbitrary representation of how long a skill is "Supposed" to take to train... but because of stat min/maxing and learning skills that entire value can be skewed very heavily. If you suddenly give a player those skill points to "Spend" in skills freely, you could literally have a character who previously was complely min/maxed for their time investment, getting as many skills as possible to level 5, and suddenly they can re-distribute those points into skills on a gross scale. For example, Shield Upgrades level 5 is worth well over 500,000 skill points all on its own. That's enough skill points in that one skill to get dozens of other skills to level 2 or 3, and from taking a quick look at the way it divides up, it can quickly suddenly give that player "Free Time".
This doesn't work at all. The game doesn't even have a function for "Spending" skill points, to the best of my knowledge, which means it would require manual creation... and it's not something that should even be done.
The game was designed in a fashion that puts players in the position of "If I don't like how my character has been made so far... I'm just going to spontaneously change direction!" There's no upper limit to where you can take your character except the raw number of skills in the game. It's not like your investment in carrier skill trees has to go away for you to change direction. I'm an Engineer. If I wanted, I could easily just change my path right now and start building Battlecruiser skills. The only thing stopping you from doing it is your own inhibitions about feeling as though you've "wasted time", BUT GUESS WHAT, YOU'RE COMPLAINING ABOUT HAVING WASTED TIME ON A COMPUTER GAME.
OH NOES.

Edited by: Sheriff Jones on 25/10/2007 15:33:22 Re-spec is for MMOs where you can "gimp" yourself.
In EVE, the only thing you can really gimp is your wallet. You can't put your character in such a position, that you can't train something else to "correct" apst mistakes.
Sure, you can spend time on useless skills, but then again, in the future those skills might be needed.
Let's say, in the future, more advanced Motherships/carriers come out, then you'd really wish you didn't re-spec those skills.
Most of amarr, after the initial shock, didn't mind that they had trained for interdictors/command ships, only to find they can't use their lasers on them. They trained missiles and happy times.
Things change, and in EVE, lucky for you and me, we CAN adapt.
If in other games they "nerf" something, it can ruin, completely RUIN your character.

Not to sure why you are upset but there is nothing wrong here. There should be no re-spec, this is EVE-Online, not Worlds of Warcraft, city of heroes or villains, or other MMOs.
These skills you have trained to this point are no less valuable then they were when you first trained them up. I have found over the years the changes have benefited me in one way or another. Skills that I trained for one reason later became very important for another. Wait to see the changes done to the skill descriptions before you go over board making requests that will never happen. If you have been playing as a long as you are saying, then you should know very well what to expect. CCP does balance things, they have been very good at that regardless of what a lot of people say, they have done an exceptional job at doing.
Trying to create a balance between ships and lag as always been difficult. Years ago the Domi could launch 15 drones, I remember launching 10 with my Raven. This was a lag issue, now a days the carrier and mother ship are filling these roles especially with them becoming more and more common. The change is needed from the progression of the game.
I would suggest for the future before jumping to conclusions you wait to see all the changes CCP has planned. They added an item called the magic ball, I suggest you take a good look at it, it may provide you with the information you seek. The sword can only strike one enemy at a time, but tactics can defeat ten thousand men at once. |

No. Use what your ships will be good at instead of what you want them to be good at. Honestly the only people I see whining about this are the ones that camp in low sec and/or use them as solo battleship killers. Most people who use them for their intended purpose don't care because they won't be changing much.

Yeah, god forbid CCP leave us in the dust after wasting all that time training energy emission systems 4. And we all know that if it takes one wingman to use all 12 fighters then those months of carrier training were a 100% loss. Time to completely throw away the founding element of Eve (skill training) so that we can survive.

No, your skills still work fine even if you have to change your goal slightly.
With a respec available you could leave a long and pointless skill training for months, quit Eve come back respec for whatever you want.
Respecing would further encourage the narrow minded pilots who only train for one ship. They could also respec to whatever other ship of comparable commitment at an time.
There is no way that a respec of any kind would be viable or advisable in Eve.
