I personally much prefer Adobe Premiere for video editing, but there's a fair number out there who would say the reverse and prefer Sony Vegas :P
Basically, the best plan is to try out both and find out which interface you prefer :S (Sorry for being basically unhelpful, but any opinion I could give would be just that, opinion )

Basically, there's two pieces of software you should consider.
Premiere and Vegas
There isnt much difference between them, except the user interface, so pick one and stick with it.
The really high-powered **** out there (used for Hollywood movies) is not worth your time, as you won't see any benefit from it for making eve movies. ---

Vegas is better for audio when you have lots of tracks to mix, but Premiere beats it overall - it just cuts your editing time down enormously.
Add a second monitor for previews = editing in god mode

I prefer Final Cut Studio 2 because of the separate programs it came with and because i find it easy to use . Also a lot of database (audio, special effects).

sony vegas all the way, but if you just want to make a movie in 5-10min then go for the windows movie maker that comes with all XP and vista, its a good little program and rather easy to learn to use then if you want to work up to the bigger ones then get like Sony vegas
