Sup Everyone,
Just wondering if anyone knows of a source for the EVE Chronicles in audio format? There are a few on eve-files which were very professionally done which I listened to but would like to hear more! After an extensive search I couldn't find any, so I'm just wondering if anyone else knows where I can get MOAR?
P.S. I want them in audio as I listen to them in my car on the way to work. Thanks - Max. |

Do you have a link handy to the ones on eve-files? I am le lazy and none too good finding that stuff. Perhaps I could convince some really talented voices to pick up where these got left off. The Pod Goo Podcast http://www.podgoo.com

I did serious look at doing this as part of a radio show when I was on NER and relooked when I joined DMR. I then revisited the idea when I thought about do an eve fiction pod cast. I not only looked and got permission to use CCP offical stories but also EON stories in clipped form, just as tasters.
The problem I found is that why they are very excellect pieces of written fiction, converting them into an audio format would require significant rewritting. While you could just read what is written they don't seem to work as an audio book. The pace is often too slow and feeling of the piece is lost. Having listen to alot of good audio books on radio, and a lot of bad on tape, I didn't want to create a bad version.
However I would be interested to know just how much interest there is in this. If there is enough I might just relook at it again.

I went ahead and laid some voice tracks on a few them yesterday...Boffles is right, they don't really sound that good in voice form. I started from the 2004 Chronicles and they were written very poorly or copy pasta'd to evelopedia poorly. Loads of bad grammar and awkward sentences.
I'm interested in this project but I think this will be a mountain of work. I think it would be worth the work though. The Pod Goo Podcast http://www.podgoo.com

Glad to know that my assessment of the idea of audio chronicals was correct. I thought it was just me. I think the older Chronicals are a bit of a problem. I think the issue is that many of them deal with the technical aspects and have no heart to the stories. With audio works In my experience you need to have it almost as if you were having a one sided conversation. Maybe that is the secret to making them work.
If you are really interested in this idea drop me a line. I think I have found an old EON story that just might work.

I knew they sounded awkward but I couldn't put my finger on why. Woot, I now have a direction to go with this. Shoot me an email at [email protected] if your serious about doing this. This will be fun. The Pod Goo Podcast http://www.podgoo.com

I think we only did like a half dozen or something, and I don't know if we even released them all in the end. There were secret plans for more, but then I had to go off and write a novel and do the Fiction Portal and whatnot.
I'm pleased to hear someone's still interested in these, and really damn happy that you all are doing more of your own accord. It'll be interesting to hear the outcome; some of the chronicles I wrote are rather more amenable to audio than others, and a few of them are going to be a real challenge.

Boffles has sent me his first draft of a very interesting Chronicle. He has an excellent narrative voice and you'll be happy when he's finished that one. I've produced one that is in closed beta with my strongest critics (my corp) and it will come out soon. Or...I'm going to get someone else to do it. I can't decide if my voice is too deep or too derp.
My first...album...for lack of a better word will be about crime, torture, and punishment. I felt that was the best route to go since New Eden is such a cuddly and feel good universe. The Pod Goo Podcast http://www.podgoo.com

Awesome!! As I'm unsure what standard practice for making these are, will you guys going to be adding sound effects in them also? doors closing, footsteps etc. as presented in the ones I linked above? or will they just be read out? |

Most likely, no sound effects. Audiobooks are traditionally just narrated. The ones you linked are more radio drama, which is really freaking cool (see Tech 4 News Podcast).
The narration bit is a lot harder than I would have given it credit. I thought to myself, "I can read. I have a microphone. How difficult could this be?"
It is actually really difficult. I now understand why audiobooks are so freaking expensive. Narrating and providing the nuance each story has requires multiple read-throughs to get intimately familiar with the material. Then one of more weirder problems I noticed is that we group words on paper far differently than we do when we speak them - a lot of these phonic groupings are difficult to nail without slurring the words or making it so staccato you sound barely literate. Just to back up what Ender Black says, it is not a simple as it sounds. If you read the words as they are written you find the story becomes stunted and lifeless. That is way as I pointed out and we have both done is to abridge the stories.
I have listened to Ender's first draft and to return the kind words he said about me... gosh he has a much better voice then me. Anyway I have done take two. Only take five to twenty to go...

Holey moley, you guys are awesome. I remember how fascinated I was reading those stories for the first time (especially "technical-boring" ones).
Thumbs up and you have my heart by your side. |
