I've sold a few looted items and am a bit confused. When I hit sell on the "simple" screen, it seems that it's an instantaneous sell. What confuses me is that it seems to be a sale to an actual player. How are they buying my item that fast? Also, what's the difference in the "advanced" tab? Those don't seem to be instantaneous sales. I'm probly just missing seeing something, but thanx for the help.

Yeah, as Rosa said, the immediate purchases are going to buy orders. The RP explanation is that a character talks to a broker at the station, pays them a small fee, and the broker deals with the order for them, snapping up whatever of the good they can get at the specified price.
Sell orders are what you get on the Advanced tab. Don't like what other people are offering? Fine then, put up an order, name your own price, and wait to see if people like your prices.

They are buying instantly because you are selling to a Buy Order. I might offer to Buy Widgets at 100 ISK each at every station within 5 jumps of Earth for the next month, setting a minimum quantity of 10. If you are selling 50 Widgets at Sirius, 3 jumps away, that matches.
Of course the Widgets are still at Sirius, so I have to fly there to pick them up.
The Advanced Tab is Sell Orders, the opposite of Buy Orders. I sell the Widgets I've collected at Earth for 200 ISK each (profit!), you come to Earth and buy them.
The Market button on the left side of your screen gives access to the Market for your Region. Using the Browse Tab find an item that interests you and play around with settings. Traders spend hours doing this, but even a few minutes can save you from wasting lots of ISK.

If you want to sell at your own price hit the advanced tab... otherwise it's just filling someone's buy order. Depending on the item it may or may not be better to place a sell order. Need a jump clone? Tired of jumping 30 jumps to hang out with friends? Try our new Jump Clone Service! |

The trade profit formula is:
Buy Orders Sell Orders ?????? Profit
The ????? bit is what the broker does.
