Once upon a time, an EVE subscriber had the luxury of using the star map without having to deal with being robbed. Yes, I say robbed because every time someone opens up his/her star map, they sacrifice 12 seconds of time to watch a cinematic sequence of themselves moving out of first person perspective and into a view of the universe. In days of old, the transition was instantaneous (perhaps 1 or 2 seconds of lag during peak hours or for low bandwidth users). Recently, I verified my claim several times with a stopwatch in hand by opening and then closing the star map. It takes approximately 6 seconds from the time you click "star map" to the time that you can utilize its features; the same is true for returning to 'first person' mode. My system runs EVE at about 40 fps at 1600x1200, which I understand to be fairly common as well as seamless.
12 Seconds is long enough to put a freighter into warp, to miraculously spawn a handful of T2 BPO's, for thousands to swarm into a system and crash a node, or for a few hundred people to log in simultaneously at a gate with warm, text-based smiles and Cyrillic greetings...
I estimate that during the peak hours of TQ, 30,000 people will be logged in at any given time over a period of roughly 6 hours. Assuming that the star map is viewed about once every hour per person, the starmap is checked 6(30,000) times. At 12 seconds per session, this comes to 6(30,000)(12). This comes out to about 2,160,000 seconds, or 36,000 minutes, or 600 hours. 600 hours of time spent per day (during peak hours only) transitioning from your ship's ass to the star map; what the f***. That's enough time for me to write this post about 1200 times over while my ECON professor lectures on about Keynesian Economic Theory and I pretend to be taking notes on a laptop.
Let's band together and destroy the star map transition cinamtic sequence.

There is an option in the game already to make it instant. ----

I stopped reading after the first couple of lines to let you know that you can go to Star Map -> Aninmation and select the "Instant" option to avoid having to wait the said 12 seconds.

Edited by: Tarminic on 02/11/2007 21:41:27 Oh god, the humanity.
Though an option to turn off the transition sequence would be vaguely nifty, I think you may be slightly overstating it's importance. Combining that with the tinfoilery, your post fails.
And if this is an imitation, I'm flattered.
EDIT: Also, it already exists. ---------------- Tarminic - 29 Million SP in pink Forum Warfare |

That's the most I've laughed from a post in a while!
Just picture this guy sitting in his chair, screaming at the top of his lungs with a stopwatch in his hand, spending hours timing six second intervals! Rich man, real rich. Keep this thread alive.
classic example of 90% of the whining on these boards. Moderatorss should spend more time squashing flamer's posts. --
