Hey everyone.
I think EVE online is a fantastic game and I find myself spending a lot of time playing it lately.
Ive made a few accounts to help me in my endeavours but I cant help but wonder if i have joined too late? There are people in this game that have been playing for years, who are so far ahead of the new starters that its impossible to match their level over time.
How many years will eve last for from here onwards? It would be a really sad event for me to spend so much of my free time, only to see eve die in a years time.
CCP, please tell me you will keep this game going for a long time!

WoW is a fad, Eve is for Life. That explain things?
If you need more, you can become competitive vs older players if you specialize at first. What they have up on you is versatility. -------------------------------------------------- You can run, but you'll only die tired. this is a very smart person PURPLE FOR PURPLES SAKE <3 Eris |

The way they were all talking at the fan fest it isn't going to end anytime soon. It's their Intellectual Property and they're constantly looking at ways to improve and expand on it. Don't forget, this isn't some company doing dev work for someone else. They are independent and this is their livelihood, so it makes sense to keep it going and profitable for as long as possible. Who can blame them. If I had a product as cool as this, I would too. Wouldn't you?

Edited by: Helen Hunts on 05/11/2007 23:58:20 Eve will last until the overwhelming number of ships in Jita finally tips the system's mass over the line and a black hole forms and starts pulling in other systems. At that point, we're all pretty much (CENSORED!)

Had you gone to Fanfest this year you would have seen first hand that the Eve Online Developers are exceptionally passionate about their game and intend to have it continue for a long time.
Trinity expansion will bring astounding new graphics, new ships, new missions and much more. Ambulation is in development to bring another aspect to Eve.
In short - You should be fine for many years to come

I understand what you are feeling. I was very much into EnB for most of its life. As a matter of fact I played EVE Beta for a while, but decided to stay with EnB because I thought it had more of a future.
But CCP and EA are very different companies, and EVE and EnB are very different situations. EnB was a Westwood game that EA took on and semi-supported for a year and a half. EVE is CCP's baby, and most of their resources are devoted to and dependent on EVE's success.

from what i saw on the fanfest, they have no intention to stop developing eve... i think eve will only stop if CCP does a ****up a-la-SWG...
and yes, there are more experienced players then you. me for example (no chestbeating), i've 30mil sp. i've friends with 66mil sp and with 80mil sp. but altough i'm about 50mil sp lower, i can still keep up with them.
a good example is goonswarm. i can't find their propaganda posters... but they are sweet... anyway, they are mostly nubs, new players. and just go to the terratorial maps to see what they accomplished =p

I agree, like them or not, Goonswarm is a perfect example of the fact that new players can accomplish things even though they are far behind skill wise.

Eve has no real end (unlike WOW, when you have done all the endgame crap there is little to do but shallow and boring pvp) and with it's popularity and playerbase still on the rise and the universe constantly expanding both in depth and breadth i can see it going strong for at least another 5 years to come.

here's a fun fact.
all of my wowtards at school, I'm talking 6000hours plus of playing wow and watching wow PvP vids, and ****ting the game at night.
they are all obsessed with warhammer now. they call it the greatest game ever made ever. better than eve olz, better than starcraft and better than halo. yes I asked them, and they all said it was better than mass effect, I almost wanted to commit social suicide but they are still my friends, so...
my point, to them WoW died out of no where. that doesn't strike me as.... more than a fad.
eve on the other hand, peole still hate and almost no one I talk to has ever hread of the game.
so as long as it keeps going this way, eve will live on, because unlike a fad which died, eve is still very unknown, and thus not a fad, if anything it spreads slowly every day.
and when we can ride tanks and planes and fire guns, the game will still be alive.

I believe they said they had a 10 year plan, but i guess that plan is always changing. They will most likely continue until: a) the game is broken beyond reasonable financial repair, ie coding screwup demands a compete recode of the game, b) a game of similar class is designed by a rival company which oblitorates CCP's creation, everybody leaves to go play that or c) a global nuclear war occurs :) _______________________________ [ 2007.06.07 21:07:22 ] FrankyWave > ransom me guys I am joining XElas !!!

EVE will be in danger of dieing when something better comes along, not before.. and even then it will have fircely loyal fanbase (if CCP manages to keep nerfs at bay).
Currently there is no game that even comes close to the complexity of EVE. And those that promise heaven and earth are pure vaporvare at this point in time.
As for not catching up.. after you get pays 20-30 mil SP you're pretty much on par with most of the things veterans can do, even if they have have 80 mil SP.. sure you might not be able use a titan, mine gas clouds and build t2 at the same time, but you can fly most ships you want and have a vast array of other skills at least to level 4. ------------------------ I don't believe in sigs. |

I have (seen/talked to/got them drunk) CCP Employees and ISD at Fanfest(2006) , it is not just another game or a living(financially) for these guys, it is a passion and way of life too
EVE will live harmoniously with other MMOs , and other MMOs have a lot to live up to and a long long way to go to even get close to EVE(like Infinity)
No matter the Nerfs, Bugs, Lags or (not so good)New Contents, I will be playing it in 5 years and beyond

Skill system has its ups and downs - time invested wise, but its here and theres no changing it.
Personaly - Im just playing it like any other game / MMO - untill something better comes along or it gets boring / repetative.
Glad to say that it would seem like DEVs care what happends to this game and actualy try to improve things. Sometimes they fail and other times they sucseed - but change is perpetual in EVE it would seem - and thats a good thing
EDIT: Oh and personaly I prefer this movie: There can be no other destiny ....
