The installer for the generic linux system, eve-000062.tgz, installs the files from the root directory to many places in the file system. That is, some files go in /etc, some in /usr, etc. Can we get an installer that keeps all of the files under one directory? It's much nicer to be able to put the game into my home directory such as ~/games/eve. Or if I want to make the game available system wide, /usr/local/games/eve. Having files put all over the file system is very sloppy and makes uninstalling cleanly very difficult to manage.

Transgaming fail again. Configuration files for user-applications (especially not games) do not go in /etc
Less and less do I look forward to testing this crap on my system..
Why is it so hard to install to /opt/eve (or other) and use sensible config paths (ENV variable or $HOME/.eve by default)..

I need to looking into it, but it seems that the Cedega portion of the install goes in as root, and the EVE portion (and specific Cedega support files) go under the user.
Though I ultimately prefer Wine still. Cedega seems sloppy by comparison.

While I agree it would be nice to install into an isolated directory, root relative tarballs have been a slackware package system for a long long time. And if you notice by default /etc/cedega.conf is empty. It's not used for user specific configuration. It's meant for system level configuration, things like whether or not to allow DGA as far as I can tell, which is something that should probably be root write only. But I guess if you're playing EVE you already have a SUID X server with closed source video drivers linked in and sketchy kernel modules so maybe they should just say screw it make it easy for the end user. While I generally agree with you, most closed source games on linux drop the ball, EVE isn't alone. |

The linux installer is something that is just being started with eve right now. This should be fixed now so that the problems do no tpersist down the road. Just because other people are sloppy with their setups, doesn't mean that eve should be as well. In fact, I've never seen a closed source unix program packaged this badly. Heck, there isn't even a way of uninstalling eve. Everything has to be done by hand.
The way things are looking right now, I have to roll my own ebuilds for gentoo. I don't want to spend the time doing that.

This is just the base installer package that gets installed in the root location. When you run EVE the first time you can select an appropriate place to put the game files.
Unless you are using slackware or Gentoo you should really be using the appropriate rpm or deb packages for your package management system which automatically tracks files which are added. This behaviour is really quite standard for many applications.

Edited by: Percussor on 08/11/2007 19:46:30 If youre not using a distribution that they support and create packages for I don't really blame them. You're choosing to not use a system to track files on your machine so you're on your own. As for uninstalling: rm `tar -ztf eve-000062.tgz` rm -r /usr/lib/eve /usr/share/doc/eve /home/*/.cedega/EVE\ Online in / will do it

They could easily do it so it is distribution neutral, but no, instead they opt for this. :/

If you select multi-user it is normal all configs go on /etc.
I installed for single user and they drop the config in your home directory under .cedega like it is supposed to do. Works great btw. ---

Fedora 8/XP dual boot system with the XP setup mounted, for advanced users or those who switch back and forth alot (due to work/home life, etc) I've installed the game under XP, and then in linux with the eve engine in cedega, pointed the emulator to the win32 partition. One install, two op-sys. :)
Cheers, Voltaire Refined. Prolific skill saturates incorporeal authority; peerless in prevalence. |
