Right, I have done a quick search on the matter, I fully understand that this full passive tank is very good for missions and boring your pvp opponent to death... sort of.
Is it completely crazy to consider an active tank for lvl 3 missions? I know its not as easy as the passive sit and chill type thing, but a slightly more aggressive dmg mod setup, with shield boosters and what not?
I have been running lvl 3s with this set up:
7 Heavy Launchers 1 Drone Link Augmenter (or what ever else)
3 Large Shield Extenders 1 Passive em resist 2 Invun Fields
2 Power Diagnostic 2 Shield Power Relays
The above set up I feel works very nicely the cap holds at a sensible lvl and what not.
But I'd like to put in more dmg mods with out breaking the passive and my view on this is make it more active...
Again I say the passive tank rocks... but why not active?
Thanks in advance, for all sensible input.

Passive and active tanks are both good and viable.
But never ever go hybrid.
Simply fit a booster, some harderners maybe an amplifier and as many cap mods as you need to keep it running long enough to tank the mission, fill it up with damage mods.

So, what you're running is the "Too lazy to swap out for mission hardeners" fit.
The firepower you're describing really isn't very aggressive, and is still a "sit and chill" fit, but you actually turn things on and off once in a while. In your search you should have found that you're running a pretty vanilla fit for the drake.
The question really shouldn't be "can the drake run active hardeners for missions?" rather: "Is there a situation where an active tank is better?"
Short answer: Not for missions, and especially L3 missions. Drakes run l4 missions passively just fine. There are *faster* ways to run l4 missions, but few cheaper.

Your setup is very similar to mine-
Highs 7 x T2 Heavy Launchers 1 x Tractor Beam
Meds 3 x T2 Large Extenders 1 x T2 Shield Recharger 2 x T2 Invul Fields
Lows 1 x T2 Shield Power Relay 2 x T2 PDU's 1 x T2 BCU
3 X CDFP rigs.
With this setup I have over 18k shields with a shield recharge of 276. Never had the shields go down more than 15% no matter what mission I've done. I could swop out one of the rigs and replace it with an Anti-EM screen rig just to boost the EM shield a bit, but to be honest I prefer the shield recharge time boost the CDFP rigs give me. Yes if you can afford Factiontems and a Pithum A Booster, then you can put 2 BCUs in and run the Booster perma. With T2-items you will run out of CAP quickly and with the low CPU of the Drake you will need CPU-Upgrades. For PVE use a passive Fitting, an Active makes only sense in PvP. Using PDS to equip a 3.Xtender is stupid. The Tank is better with only 2 Xtenders and SPRs in the Lows. Use Shield Recharger or Hardener instead till your Skills are good enough to equip 3 Xtenders. With this Tool you can find out the best Fitting: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=548883

Active tanks are a good bit inferior to passive tanks on the Drake. Semi-passive tanks (that means active hardeners) do the best, shortly followed by full-passive tanks.
Overall, this is the general setup 7x HML II (will require Engineering V and AWU IV, but why pay out the nose for Arbalest?) 1x whatever 3x LSE II 3x mission-specific T2 hards (less cap than invulns, too) 2x BCS II 2x SPR II (with high cap skills, can go to 3 and perma-run the hards) 3x CDFP I

Edited by: Kazuma Saruwatari on 09/11/2007 23:28:42 I'd advise you go full-passive. With so-so skills (lvl3) they work on lvl4's. At skill lvls of 4 or 5, you start seeing viability as fire-support in gang PvP, due to the fact that you can field a gang support mod on a BC and act as a gang booster (once gang is converted to fleet of course), couple this with being a tough nut to bust open, well...
Semi-passives (active hardeners) work best if you know the opponent isnt going nos/neuts. -

Liang's gonna contradict you on that one. One time her semi-passive Drake was being neutted by some guy, took like 6-7 minutes for his cap to go down. It's surprisingly difficult to neut somebody down when he isn't helping you along with a rep.

If you're doing fire-support in pvp, I'm pretty sure that, after you've fit 3 BCS and a damage control, that you're better off going active. Not having to fit those purger rigs means it'll be cheaper also.

Thank you for your replies. Looks like I will continue with my semi-passive, and focus my training on that.
Now to figure out the Nighthawk/Raven Debat, but thats for a diff thread I guess.
THanks again.
