When I'm not mining asteroids, I'm flying WW2 combat flight simulators.
Online there may be thirty planes in a furball that the computer has to track, computing speed, gravity, speed, angle, rate of climb etc, individually and with a different flight and damage model for each plane, in real time.
Full physics modeling based on their real life counterparts.
And each plane is wearing a custom skin at 1024x1024.
That's just the flying!
Now add in a few hundred thousand bullets (with a different physics for each type) that are individually tracked and the appropriate damage added to whatever they hit.
Note that the planes are flying through fully rendered volumetric clouds as well as have fully realistic reflections in the authentically modeled ocean.
Add flack explosions and other assorted ground and ship fire.
Every ship gunner on each battleship is rendered in 3D.
Etc... etc... etc...
Here's the thing...
I play sim this with nary a stutter and with only the occasional short freeze.
So why...
Am I getting five to ten second freezes when playing EVE?
At sometimes four or five times in a minute?
Most frustrating
Any advice would me appreciated
Cheers,
Black Otis

Good thing about having a huge cargo hold is that I can spend some time watching the processes while my ship is running a repetitive task.
Here's what I saw:
Very consistent.
Is there something that the eve server does once every 40 secs or so that would be causing those spikes (and the associated freeze that goes with them).
EVE was the only process showing any activity and this doesn't happen with any of the other games I play.
Anyone?

Firewall or anti-virus?
That's not an Eve thing, I think.

I don't have an Anti-virus client running and when I just shut down the firewall (Zone Alarm), there was no change.
As I said, this is the only game I have this issue with.
I have been combing through my computer looking for all the usual suspect and then some. Nada.
So...
It is an Eve thing, I think.
Question is...
As I am the one spending the money to play this and I am diligently looking to see if it's a problem at my end...
Would it be too much to ask you, who is receiving my money to do the same at yours?
Thanks,
Otis

Does it matter where you are or what you are doing?
Eve does a lot of graphics stuff on the CPU until trinity comes out. If you are mining or something like that wher eyou might be seeing or doing something cyclical, that could be it. Have you messed with graphics settings? Sound turned off, etc?

Messed with the graphics settings?
If by that you mean have I adjusted the graphics settings using the tool you provided, then yes.
Sound is running.
I just did a 13 system jump and found no freezes happening, but as soon as I settled down for a two hour mining load...
BAM, back again.
So, perhaps you may be right about the cyclical stuff.
Unfortunate as that is what I spend most of my time doing. So... what is it, then? A memory dump? Cache overflow?
Is this a known issue?
There is at least one other person that I've seen here with the exact same thing happening. I'm sure more will pop up as they come looking here for a fix.
As for Eve running a lot of graphics off the CPU. You can see from the above picture that it doesn't go over 25% usage until it spikes. And even then, it doesn't hit 100%.
Compared to the other games I play, this one is graphically simplistic. I'm sure my P4 3gig, X1950Pro and 2gigs of ram running this off a 10,000rpm Raptor can handle it
Yikes!
I'm being attacked! Got to go...

A friend of mine has a very nice gaming computer and his was doing the same thing...every 60 seconds or so it would "freeze" for about 2 seconds, then resume just fine.
He reinstalled his Eve Client and everything is working normally now...I hope this helps

Thanks for that
I'll give it shot and see what happens.
I had already reinstalled after the update, but it's starting to drive me nutz. I'm willing try any long shot I can to get this thing smoothed out.
If I can't get this sorted then I guess I'll have to bail, as it's basically unplayable like this.
That'll be three accounts lost as my kids are ready to sign up as well.
It is a nice game to play as a family. There aren't many like it. Too bad if it doesn't work out

Update:
This seems to be a time issue.
When I first fire up Eve, it runs smooth as silk.
It's only after about an hour that the freezes start and then it just keeps getting worse until I exit and restart.
I would like to find a better solution than that. For mining it's not so bad as I can simply return to a base and restart. But if, after an hour, a battle erupts and I'm getting five second freezes, it's game over!
Anyone have a solution?

Greets,
Have you tried bumping up the buffer size used by EVE in your prefs.ini file? If not, bump it up to half of your RAM, that should go a long a way in improving the "burps". While you are in your prefs.ini file, try adding adding "advancedDevice=1" (notice the lowercase "a" and upper case "D") in your prefs.ini to add some settings in the graphics options in the ESC menu. Then change the "present interval" to intervel immediate. Also, try ESC > Genaric Tab > uncheck "sun occluded by ships".
All of these suggestions come courtesy of this thread: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=110129 . There is also an excellent prefs.ini guide, located in this thread: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=108524
Hope something helps |
