Is it really worth using? Are you really become invisable for other players?

Yes you become invisible to other players but there are draw backs. If you mount one to any ship other than a covert ops ship then your speed is severely reduced (~90% of maximum velocity). There is a delay between the time that you can uncloak and when you can lock another ship and that is usually around 30 seconds for a non-covert ops ship. You also can not cloak if another ship has a lock on your ship.
If you use a covert ops ship with a cloak then many of the penalties are lower. I don't believe there is a velocity penalty and the lock delay is close to 3-4 seconds depending on skills.

Covert ops cloak fitted to covert ops frig will get you through most gate camps. Well it does for me.
Very worth it imho, and they are dirt cheap in most places.

Well, as I'm curious about cloaking as well... does a cloak carry through between stargate jumps? Or do you need to reactivate it during your 30-sec invis time after hopping out the other side?
Also, are there any cloaking jammers? Or once ya got it up, you're essentially safe? If there are no jammers, are there any other circumstances that can break your cloak? ----- Ymandra's Profile |

You can't actually activate the cloak while the 30sec jump-in cloak is active. You need to move your ship - usually by double-clicking to align to an object or by engaging warp - wait a split-second and then hit the cloak. Edit: I recommend practicing this in a non-hostile situation first :)

An object coming within 2km of your ship will decloak you. Someone told me corpses, wrecks and cans no longer decloak you, but I haven't confirmed this for myself yet.

Edited by: Pirate Tom on 12/11/2007 18:12:22 Cloaking does not... Carry over from system to system Stay active while warping (exception is the covert ops cloaking device II) Allow you to reload your weapons or use any other module except the cloak
Cloaking does... Severely reduce your maximum velocity (except covert ops cloaking device II) Impose a penalty on your scan resolution (except covops) Impose a 'sensor recalibration time' during which you cannot target (except stealth bombers) Have a cooldown during which you cannot activate it again for several seconds (except covops, 5 seconds on stealth bombers I believe)
(edit) Corpses, Wrecks and Jettison cannisters do not de-cloak you now, however if you uncloak you will not be able to re-cloak if the object is within 2 km. Personally confirmed with wrecks in a stealth bomber.

Thanks for the responses. One day I'll own a cloaking device. And I'll be right behind you when I do -- and BAM! I kid, I kid! ----- Ymandra's Profile |

A cloak won't carry through a jump, so you'll have to re-activate it. A word of warning - prepared players have tactics for cloaking ships at gates and may be able to catch you before you warp out.
There are no cloaking jammers, although if you are locked, you won't be able to cloak. Other than that, the only way to be decloaked is to be within 2km of another object in space. This includes things not normally listed on the overview, like drones and corpses.
Bear in mind that on any other ship other than a stealth bomber, you'll have a calibration time after decloaking where you cannot target anything. In addition your signature resolution will be decreased, thus your time to lock will be increased.
While cloaked you won't be able to activate any modules, although modules with a duration effect (like afterburners) will persist for the remainder of their cycle if you cloak after activating them.
A small clarification to NightF0x's post though: A protoype cloak has a 90% speed penalty when cloaked, but the improved one only has a 75% penalty. The covert ops cloak has no speed penalty, but it can only be fitted to the covert ops ship (not stealth bomber) or the force recon. The covert ops cloak will also let you warp while cloaked.
The stealth bomber has a ship bonus that reduces this speed penalty, to the extent that with an improved cloaking device 2 and Covert Ops 4, the ship will actually travel faster cloaked than uncloaked.

In addition the new Black Ops Battleship class will not be able to fit the covops cloak, and will receive a similar ability set to the stealth bomber class regarding cloaking devises.
