Edited by: Sevarus James on 13/11/2007 23:21:59 This isn't the be-all end-all of tweaks (I'm betting), but this has helped several users during the old cedega days, and hopefully a few of these will improve performance for some of you having slower fps problems. Keep in mind that this is for NVIDIA card owners primarily. (ATI users mileage may vary and some of the config option settings are specific for nvidia, as well as the nvidia-settings tool information that follows:
First locate the Config tool as follows: Menu pic which isn't displaying here properly
Which will bring up:
From this screen: general tab settings: DXGrab= unchecked <-----THIS IS WHERE YOU FREE YER MOUSE! scheduler=no checked: decrease wineserver priority accelerated interprocess.
The "HUD" and "Show memory usage" are checked so I can monitor how much ram and general fps my client is doing. EVE's ctrl+f will do the trick as well, but I find the top corner placement and color of the cedega function to be easier and more informative.
-------Note that I use a utility called taskset to pin EVE to one cpu. This allows me to turn off the scheduler and its associated settings. Under a single core processor, these settings can most likely run default.
Next is the audio tab:
SOUND -yep, it does work! using alsa for sound ctl device= default pcm device= default ---normally these two will default to "hw". This will cause problems on some systems (mine.) replacing this with "default" fixes my sound issues completely, and I see no framerate hit with or WITHOUT sound. mmap normally NOT checked -not needed for audio. (This, iirc, is for outbound, such as voice comms.) --this might now need to stay checked for eve-voice. ---note on some systems, switching to OSS will clear up some "back screen crashing".
Next we turn to the Graphics tab:
Manually set the video to the card's specs: (my card= nvidia 7950GT 512)...adjust yours to fit. (On the example screen it shows "default" and this is fine for running a single client.
video ram=512 <--or whatever your card handles agp vertex=128 <--" " -----------note this is where you will 1/2, 1/4, etc. the card specs to get better performance when using multiple clients.
This doesn't seem to make much difference, whichever is chosen: pixel shaders=1.4
EVE doesn't use 2.0 vertex shaders=1.1
checked: nv_var arb_vbo
UNCHECK framebuffer/float Uncheck GL shading language Uncheck Occlusion Queries. ---------what surprised me here is that FBO, although problematic in 5.2.10 and lower tended to INCREASE frame rate. In 6.0, it seems to DECREASE it. By unchecking these new settings, my framerate jumped about 20% over having them checked.
Next post will show the nvidia-settings tool and some tweaks to improve performance.

Nice guide.
I can add to it by announcing that having fancy compiz effects activated in ubuntu seens to give you slower fps, at least if you're on a crappy system like mine.
(I have 20 fps in space, sitting in a belt. 2,8 ghz intel / 1gb ram / ubuntu and crap nvidia fx 5600 128 mb)

Easy fix for that. On slow machines with compiz enabled, the quick solution is to do this:
1. alt+f2 type "metacity --replace" and then hit enter. This will disable compiz and bring back the default window manager.
2. Play EVE.
3. When done with EVE do:
alt+f2 and type: "compiz --replace" and then hit enter. This will reenable compiz for the cool gee-wizbang effects.

Thanks. As of this posting, copy/paste via cedega is STILL bugged up under linux. My recommendation is to bug report this problem (it almost assuredly already has been, but the more reports submitted on this the higher the priority it will get). Currently there are three ways to copy/paste under linux via a cedega solution:
1. forward killmail to corpmate on non cedega version; have them paste it. 2. Install wine .9.49 and a copy of EVE and use that. (It does work, and has worked for sometime.) -the drawback is that after trinity this may become very problematic until/unless wine can run the new version when released. 3. Use a killboard with an IGB friendly interface. Copy/paste inside EVE works fine. Most "EVE Development Network Killboard" setups work via IGB for instance for pasting kills/losses.
If you're watching, CEDEGA devs, feel free to chime in here. This is a DAMN important feature and has been missing from the cedega solution for quite awhile now.

git version of wine works with the SiSi client, which uses the Trinity UI, just need to change a "FALSE" to "TRUE" in one of the source files.

Thanks. I found that my corp/alliance do have igb killboards,
Next issue is that we use the numpad character set. I seem to be not able to use the numpad either in EVE but it works in Ubuntu.

First, the reference to wine .9.4x is merely as a "workaround". This thread wasn't setup to be a "wine" thread. It is an official client thread. There are big issues with the trinity client and wine (memory leakage as well as serious fps hits when viewing old textures), and SISI is a moving target that may work "today" with wine, but may not "tomorrow".
As for numpad this is ALSO an issue that has already been bug reported to TG (for cedega) as well as here for the "official client". I would again suggest that users running into these issues submit a report ANYWAY so that CCP and TG can address the problems as these are very very important to ensuring the client is working the same across all platforms.

Edit: I didn't get any massive boost in FPS. 15-50 FPS in space and about 70 in station.
Please keep in mind that while on a new engine, its using the "classic" gfx path. This isn't going to yield as good a boost as we should see when SM3 is fixed for linux/mac.
Side note, if missed, please ensure that NV_VAR is UNCHECKED in the graphics section of the eve config panel. There is a known issue with many distros and 100.19 > beta drivers causing the UI to fail to load. With this unchecked all other settings as shown in the two posts above should still work. (I've updated the sticky posts, but this is just a 2nd HEADS UP!)
My own testing so far is yielding about 15% better fps overall with the "classic" gfx at this point.

For multiple clients, I HIGHLY recommend lowering the video ram and agp data to 1/2 the card's advertised size for 2 clients.
If this section of the graphics tab is left default, running more than one client will be damn difficult and buggy at best, and won't work at all at worst.
Just an fyi.
The cedega client IS working with multiple clients, following the knowledge base's instructions for more than one copy.

It allowed me to cure some of the ills with my setup, not the least of which was now I can actually run this bugger while other sound applications are running as well, without it locking up on me.
nv_var ... check
arb_vbo ... check
dynamic and index_vbo unchecked
clip space fix ... check
aniso .. been unchecked, I'll be trying it soon
framebuffer objects unchecked
GL shading yes, occlusion queries checked.
I'm using an athlon 64 3500+ (single core!), 8800gts/320, the 100.14.19 nvidia driverset.
I'm not sure why I've been stable with arb_vbo when other people haven't, but I am. Perhaps it's something to do with my x server setup... however, I'm a linux n00b, so indeed, my x should be a plain jane default setup. edit: perhaps it's something to do with my cpu only featuring sse2 and 3dnow! ?
ES
edit: Just to note, I was totally stable before trinity, unstable with trinity, and now stable again after they did the stability patch. NO crash issues.
Before trinity, I also had no graphical glitches/etc that other people are seeing as well.

Just a couple notes. After testing with the 169.07 drivers, I can say that pixel shaders and vertex shaders CAN be moved to 3.0 with no noticable hit to fps.
Also, (at least on this athlon x2 3800 dual core) the NV_VAR extension is working fine. (no portrait or unusual effects.)
I personally use nv_var and uncheck the arb extensions, as nv_var supercedes them anyway.
DO NOT CHECK THE FBO EXTENSION. My framerate was cut over 50% with that enabled.
If you wish, antistropic filtering can be turned on with only a minimal fps hit.
I am runnning with GL Shading and occlusion queries on with no change to fps.
Overall for the "official client", the 169.07 drivers DO improve fps, but not by too much over the 100.23 driver set.
If CCP tests and gets a thumbs up, I'll update the OP with new screenshots of the settings, but currently you won't go wrong fps-wise by using what has been put there.
I HAVE noticed a few fps increase with NV_VAR, but not enough to make a big difference to the original post. -sev

Noticed tonight while playing with settings.... that my pixel shaders were running in 1.4 mode, and vertex was only 1.1... I didn't set them that way, they defaulted to it, which is why I never noticed. Too busy focusing on the other settings, I guess.
Bumping both to 3 gave me a significant speed increase, with no stability issues so far. No other changes. Mind you, of course, don't do this if your card doesnt support it. They keep gremlins chained in those cards, and things like that are prone to letting them, out :)
athlon64 3500+ (single core), 1 gig of memory if it matters, 8800gts/320 ubuntu 7.10, 100.14.19 nvidia driverset (from the repositories, even)
I'll be exploring the newly released driver at some point soon. I did notice some banding on the space background when I was panning it around earlier. But I may have been getting that before. This system is very brightly lit, with gas clouds in the background reflecting light, etc... which is what's causing the banding to show up. I need to revert my settings and see if it changes at all.

I have noticed a few oddities with FPS so I thought I would mention them here.
When docked in a station I get about 85fps generally, however when I open the fitting window, that FPS takes a 50% hit knocking down to the low 40s. I was wondering if this could in some way be related to the corrupt graphics we have had in the fitting screen forever?
Also I have noticed different FPS depending on which ship I am in. I get the following when docked into a station in the different ships I have available:
Catalyst (Destroyer) - 66.6 fps (teh ev0l) Iteron MK IV (Industrial) - 73.2 fps Myrmidon (Battle Cruiser) - 43.7 fps Amarr Shuttle (Shuttle) - 58.3 fps
I don't know if this is relevant or not to be honest. I am presuming it is based around the texture (and flashing lights) for the ships and how much rendering they take based on their complexity. But I thought it might be useful to mention it and maybe other people can post their FPS when docked based on their different ships.

I've noticed fluctuations as well, but tossed that off as differences in ship or station rendering complexity. For instance, my in station fps is ALWAYS higher in a caldari station than a minmatar one, and highest in the gallente quafe stations.
Ships? same thing. In a rifter my fps is 10-15% higher than in a BS or BC for instance.
Just tried ship fitting window. (never thought about this)....but you are right. It chops from 73fps to 40fps. Experimenting a little, I see this fps drop on the star map with solar system view up as well. Most other dialog boxes (markets/char sheet/etc.) do hit fps a bit but not drastically like this.
I'm going to screenshot this stuff and send those as a bug report.

I can understand a difference in fps for different models that are rendered, but I can't understand such a large difference. It clearly places people in certain ships at an advantage simply because of the improved fps. Say for example I am in a busy system in my myrm and only getting 23 fps, someone in another ship might be getting 2x that fps in the same system simply because of their ship model which would be an unfair advantage if the proverbial hit the fan.
I certainly think this fps issue warrants further investigation.

Edited by: Audrea on 09/02/2008 23:11:51 Great guide there! thanks a lot!
finally eve works in a window and can alt-tab, but alas, will Linux ever have something working without further problems for me?
seems the moment I alt-tab the first time, after that the Eve window looses all ability to recieve keyboard input, other than Esc, which causes black screen, with white 'EVE' writing on top left.
I'd appreciate help with this.

Thanks for the help. Managed to get my FPS from 5-7 to 25-40. Still not great, but combined w/ the multiclient fix it's usable.
Another thing I found: crank your CPU clock rate. With speedstep on my machine constantly clocks the CPU cores down to 1.2 ghz. Turning speedstep off and dialing the CPU from 2.0 ghz to 3.33 ghz (not fun for the old electric bill) was good for another 10 frames/sec.
Got the same frame rates with a 7600GS as with an 8800 GT (G92 version). You're absolutely right, we have to wait till the premium graphics rendering path to use our GPUs for Eve.

If I try to run it in windowed mode, and give a custon resolution, the result is not what I expected. The content of the window gets clipped, and is unuseable sadly. EvE always seems to use the resolution of what X is running at. Someone knows a solution to that?

Installed a clean Ubuntu. Installed Eve client, ran fine first time! (full screen) Quit game, adjusted settings as per this thread. Tried to run it again and get 2 black screens, one has the splash screen appear for a few seconds, the other completely blank. it hangs, ctrl+alt+backspace to restart x-server gets rid of the black screens. PS shows no eve/cedega stuff, but will just create 2 black windows again. Bugger! Any clues?

Geforce is BARELY capable as it is one of the oldest cards that will play with classic.
Alt+tab = NO. Use the multiple desktops and ctrl+alt+right arrow to move from one desktop to another.
The avatar problems as well as exclamation marks may need a cache clean to clear the bad pics so that eve can reload them.
