With the new update, Trinity, CCP will be unveiling a new graphics engine using the Shader Model 3. The pictures that CCP has released have looked great, but in this Dev blog: Delivering Trinity, the developer states that: " A recent Steam survey shows that about 52% of current graphics cards in use support SM3". I see this as a major problem. While this does not mean that only 48% of people actually have SM3 graphics card, it does mean that potentially many Eve players could be out of a game.
The biggest opponent to this argument is going to be that people need to update their computers to stay with the games and the hardware that is being released. I believe this, but at some point it gets rediculous. If a player did not have an SM3 compatable video card, at what point would that player want to pay $12.95 a month, then another $150 for a new video card to continue playing the game?
For those wondering, I do have a problem with some of the other changes that are coming with Trinity. For those even more concerned, my video card is capable of running SM3.

The old DX8 compatible client will still be available for those without SM3 cards.

The player have two choices. 1. They play Eve like they do now (SM2) 2 They play Eve with DX9 (SM3).
It's not the case where the player is being forced to play with DX9, they still have the option to play with the DX8 (SM2) if they want to.
EDIT: God I'm slow when I'm @ work and typing a forum message. Oh well, what they said ^^.

Yeah, it's luckily that you don't NEED to update graphics, you still get all the goodies(or badies to some people evidently) of the ...patch?
The thing is funny really, some new guy flies by my abaddon and "ooh aaah"s at it's magnificent new graphics, and i'm flying about in a glorified gold hot dog

Originally by: CCP 2Kay There will be two editions of the EVE client now, Trinity Classic with the old content, a more compact download which everyone will be able to run and Trinity, the upgraded client with the new content that utilizes the new graphics engine to its full potential.

Most recent games are using SM3 - so if you're playing anything other than EVE, chances are you'll need such a card anyways sooner rather than later. Lots of gamers are willing to pay 50Ç+ for a game that grants 15-30 hours of fun, and upgrade their graphics card anyways ... so I don't quite see why it'd be such a problem for EVE, especially considering that you don't have to upgrade, given the availability of the old DX8-client even after Trininty. _____

The single best reply, simply becuase you just pwnt yourself. I'm sorry, I really didn't realize that that was the case. I didn't read the entire dev post (I'm at work). But thanks for clearing it up for me.

It's not like the devs always said(months ago and many times) that when the draphic upgrade would come they would keep a version with the current graphics.

Edited by: Azazayl on 15/11/2007 15:04:56 It's not like maybe I decided to take a break from the game, make a new character and didn't feel like reading 3 months of posts to find that out. Not to change the subject, but I did apologize, I did admit that I was wrong, but I still bet people will come here to flame.

For all of you, that feel that people are going to run away from the game because of the updated graphics....
Way back in the day I used to beta test Ultima....during the 3D days. Everyone on the forum said that they would have to leave, because at the time it was a huge jump in graphics....
Guess what, the player base jump a good 20%
No one is going to post something that CCP has not thought about yet, your not going to say something that is so eye catching that they had no clue before hand.
Business is business, and yup, I hate having to update my rig, but when the time comes, you do what ya gotta do to play.

SM3 -> Available to those that can run it Classic -> available to those that cannot
have a nice day
edit: they also made mention you can download it, see if it runs, then switch back to the classic if you can't/lag too much to appreciate the changes... AND there is a little program one of the devs wrote that checks your comp in like 2 seconds to see now if you can run it when it comes out... _ . - Justice, Mercy, and Faith My soul has horizons further away than those of early mornings, deeper darkness than the night |
