To learn PvP, here are some helpful hints:
1) Fly cheap. Plan on losing your ship, and if you are just getting into pvp, even if you are super rich, no one really likes throwing more ISK away than they have to.
2) Dedicate yourself in one direction, to start. Training for everything is fun and gives you versatility, but means you can do everything, but not any one thing very well. Pick which direction you think you would have the most fun in, and head that route. Combat, Tackling, EWAR, Probing, are the 4 basic routes I can think of when it comes to PvP*.
3) Try to stay away from the "their ship is better than mine" mentality. This will drive you crazy, and you will constantly be thinking about this. Refer to step 2, and realize that there is no one ship catergory that beats everything.
4) Bring friends. One key for PvP, and especially for beginners, is the more friends you have the higher your success rates will be.
5) Have fun with it. As soon as it stops being fun, or more frustrating than it's worth, take a break from it. You can always come back to the universe of PvP with some more skills invested and likely do better.
*Catergories Explained Combat: This is broken down into several roles, but for simplicity we'll call them Gank and Tank. Gank means you are focusing on damage output in an attempt to destroy your target as fast as possible. You can be taken down relatively quick compared to tank ships, but your focus is breaking the targets tank. Tank means you are sacrificing some damage to be able to take a pounding. You will be able to take more damage and last longer, usually relying on friends to help deal more damage.
Tackling: Locking down your target so they can not escape. Usually a role filled by Interceptors or Interdictors (in 0.0 space) this can also be filled with fast frigates or cruisers. Larger ships can tackle, but the smaller faster ships are usually designated to get the first and fastest scram on your target. Low damage output and low tankability, their speed prevents a lot of damage.
EWAR: These ships prevent their targets from dealing damage, locking on other targets to help repair, or any other favourable action your enemy triest to achieve. Some of these ships are also used to help gang members deal their roles better, such as target painters to help deal more damage, or sensor boosters to help your gang members target faster or further. Usually low damage and tank, but locking their target down prevents them from being hit.
Probing: These ships are used to track down targets in the vastness of space. They search and find their target, warp in and get as close as possible while cloaked, to allow their gang members to warp to them and attack the target. Great for finding targets in the vastness of space. Relatively nonexistant damage and tank, but cloaking prevents them from being hit.
I know it's slightly off topic, but hopefully that helps you find your focus a little better.
