Hi.
I've not been happy with my Virgin Broadband service for a while now, its just generaly slow and poor, I cant even stream youtube most of the time. The last straw was just recently though since I've made myself an Eve piracy tutorial video which I've been trying to upload to evefiles amongst others. It seems Virgin are intentionally dropping my connection if I try to do any intensive uploading however since innevitably my connection cuts about an hour or two into uploading every time. I've been trying for days, including over night when the service should be less busy, but no dice. I'm now having to abuse a community website I run by pinching all their space to ftp my video too so I can at least resume upload when they cut my connection. Once its there I'm hopeing to be able to use the remote transfer to evefiles so I can get the space back. The point is though I shouldn't be having to jump through hoops to do this.
So can anyone suggest a good broadband service provider in the UK considering I do a lot of online gaming and file downloads/uploads? I dont mind paying extra, as long as the service justifies the expense. I look forward to your suggestions so I can finaly ring Virgin and tell them to shove their service up their arses .

Cancel it and purchase an IC from British Telecom, you will pay a few pounds more but its worthit for a reliable/fast connection.
People are always trying to save money on their IC, but it never works when you go for a free or ú9.99 IC,

Its an ADSL phone connection. I havn't spoken to Virgin since it's a Sunday today but I'll likely give them some hastle tomorrow. They'll just give me the "are you sure its not a problem on your end?" response though most likely. Besides, I started googling about the problem to see what other people say and apparently Virgin introduced 'traffic shaping'. I refuse to pay for their service if they refuse to let me fully use the service they say they provide.

Thanks for the suggestion I'll look into it. I'm not bothered about paying a premium. I earn enough money and a good internet connection is one of the luxuries I cant live without.

Virgin has been nothing but the best ISP for reliability for me, but you say your running Virgin through ADSL because (I presume) your area is not covered by the cable network?

Very good by all accounts. I use Plusnet. Good fast stable connection. I would recommend them but for the incident when they deleted a load of customers pending mail after some system maintenance. No way to get it back.

There's no cable connections in my flat anyway so I assume that cable isn't available in my area. To be honest I havn't checked.
It is a bit of a shame, I've been using Virgin for a long time. I originaly signed up when I was a student cause it was cheap and I dont remember having any problems. Sure the connection speed has always been a bit lower than I would have liked (certainly not as advertised), but nothing major or annoying until recently.
I'm really opposed to the 'traffic shaping' thing though they've introduced. They'll tell you its to increase and level out the quality of service for all customers but that's just the spin they put on it so you'll swallow it. In reality they do this because it allows them to switch to a 'gym subscription' style business model. Basically this means that they over subscribe to their service based on what they advertise they can offer knowing that the majority of their customers wont use the service to anywhere near its full potential. They then throttle, disconnect, and general annoy the hell out of those who do try to get the most out of the service hopeing you'll leave since they can fill the same bandwidth with 3 or 4 or maybe even more other customers who barely use the service but pay the same amount each, thus increasing their profits.

If your on ADSL, then the quality of the phone lines and placement of your exchange is vital.
My brother signed up to 'up to 16MB' from Sky, and they said the phone lines and exchange were in good shape, and expected at least 12MB, but he has never had over 5MB from them. Further more, they said it wasnt their problem.
Also traffic shaping is only supposed to affect the top 5% downloaders from 4pm to midnight every day, I am almost certain too that traffic shaping is related to downloading only, your connection should not have cut out from merely uploading. I think too Virgin is only traffic shaping thier cable network and not the ADSL. Please note too Virgin are not the only people traffic shaping, and more companies are starting to use this feature.
Be There is the best ADSL provider btw.

Another happy Virgin cable customer here. I've never had a problem with any traffic shaping or incorrect dl speeds. If I were you, give BT a call and get them to check what your maximum d/l and u/l speeds are on your line, then you will know whether it is virgin causing the problems or your line.
If your line is causing the problem (distance from the exchange is a biggy), then most isps will give similar results. Also check with virgin to see if u can switch to their cable broadband.

True true. I'm aware you hardly ever get the advertised speeds but mine is quite seriously low at the moment. Like I say, I cant even stream youtube most of the time. I'm not exactly living in the middle of no-where, I'm quite close to a major city so I expect I shouldn't be so badly effected by this. I have a work friend who lives on the next road over, next time I'm in work I'll have to ask him what speed he gets for comparison.

Hehe, "feature" . You dont work for Virgin do you? I know Virgin aren't the first but it really is nothing more than a scam. The majority accept it because they're low bandwidth users who are led to believe that they'll get better performance since the 'bandwidth hogs' get a slap. In reality though, the bandwidth saved by throttling, disconnecting, and getting rid of the 'hogs' is then taken up with more over subscriptions so really no-one gets any benefit at all except for the providers bank account.
Thanks for the tip anyway, I'll take a look.

Good advice. I'll give it a try, and I'll also check about cable. Not sure if I'll be able to get it installed here though, I'm just renting.

The definitely do it.... If I DL lots of stuff from usenet, as soon as I hit 3gb between 4pm and midnight, my speed drops to 600kb/s (give or take 2-3kb/s). Usually get speeds of up to 3000kb/s.
Called Virgin for a good old whine. First guy denied that they do it at all, claiming it must be a problem with my router Called back and 2nd guy admitted that they do!
NTL used to be really good but they've had a serious case of The Suck since Virgin took over. Branson isn't replying to my emails either

Ahoy,
I've been with NTL/Virgin since they first started providing net access.I can count on one hand how many probs ive had in all that time tbh.
I was connecting through my set-top box,but now through a cable modem.
I would say your best bet is to contact Virgin tech support and see what's what.
To test my connection speed from time to time,I have a look how long it takes to download the full eve client. At best connection times it takes 19 mins, when its busy,40 mins. (im on 4mg BB I think,ú20 a month)
Hope you get sorted

I have had Virgin since i have had broadband (1 and a half years ish). They were fine, reliable and fast enough untill they "awarded" me a "free" upgrade from 512 to 1MB (largest my phone line can handle). Back then i used to play alot of online shooters but shortly after my "upgrade" my pings started getting too high to play at all from about 11am - 12pm. I have tried to email them a few times asking for help but they seem to ignore my emails. Ive heard that Be broadband is the best but it is outside my budget . I may have to enquire about this cable connection although I doubt where I live has access to it. *sigh*
Good luck finding a new connection

I'm not saying that they don't do it, but I don't do much downloading, so I've never experienced it.

Get internet frokm a local ISP that delivers through your citys/countys intranet/backbone. It's the best deal you can get in terms of reliability and speed. But it's not very common to have that luxury.

I'm with Virgin ADSL. My connection speed (from various speedtests) varies from 200kb/s to 30kb/s, the minimum "acceptable" level for my 8mb connection is 500kb/s.
I've had them blame everything but themselves, but the fact that the speed always drops to dire levels on the weekends leads me to believe Virgin simply can't support the number of users they have signed up.
I was with AOL (*shudder*) for a year with a 1mb connection and received a far better connection than I do now.
No cable in my area.
I'm in the OP's boat, suggestions on a good new router (my current one disconnects occasionally due to voltage issues with USB) and ISP would be much appreciated.

Fast and reliable. No throttling of ports/traffic shaping etc. But does have download caps, albeit very high caps. Also do "office" packages with double the upload bandwidth.
Full control panel to check your usage and direct connection stats from BT wholesale.
I'm 2km from my exchange and still connect at around 6-7mbit (this is more to do with my line), and can happily download at around 650kbyte/sec anytime of the day or night :)

my internet from virgin has been dropping lately too. I phoned their free call "service outage" number - just to see what areas are being worked on etc - and asll you get now is an automated message that asks you to visit their website (!! if i had internet i wouldnt be calling the bleeding number would i?) or call their new 25p per minute technical line. So i called head office to ask about this and their reply was: if you call the 25p per minute line and the fault isnt yours they will refund the money BUT only if you ask at the end of the call. If you dont ask you will be charged. This means that every time you lose connection due to standard upgrade work or whatever, you have to pay them to find out. Most people (as they well know) will forget to ask.

I have Virgin cable (20Mb) and it is great. Their ADSL product, however, suffers the same problems as any other provider of that technology. Sure some providers are better than others on the part of the network they control, but they are all only as good as your line to the exchange.
Also, Virgin expect to have 50Mb available to all customers who currently have 20Mb by the end of next year (I know, it sounds like forever).
