Howdy folks.
I was stumbling through the internet when I came across a fantastic idea for a charity. What they've gone and done is mixed word triva with rice; for every correct answer, 10 grains is donated to people in need of chow. It is paid for by the advertisers.
Originally by: "Page" About FreeRice FreeRice is a sister site of the world poverty site, Poverty.com.
FreeRice has two goals:
1. Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free. 2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free. This is made possible by the sponsors who advertise on this site.
Whether you are CEO of a large corporation or a street child in a poor country, improving your vocabulary can improve your life. It is a great investment in yourself.
Perhaps even greater is the investment your donated rice makes in hungry human beings, enabling them to function and be productive. Somewhere in the world, a person is eating rice that you helped provide. Thank you.
More info for the curious here.
It's an addictive game... I spent 40 minutes on it without noticing. People at work or roaming > 0.5 beware. Try it, maybe you'll like it.
That concludes my one-a-year post. Thanks for readin', have fun.

This has been posted at least once before.
The rice I donated through this was completely free! Well I'm sure someone paid somewhere but they didn't get what they paid for.
I read the details of it after I'd got bored of it, I had no idea it was paid for by ads as I use an adblocker and so saw none of them. Oops, my bad. It's not as if I've ever (intentionally) clicked on a single ad anyway!

Yeah, its just paid for by ads. If the website is spammed 10mill times, taking an average of 1% each time an add is clicked, that's 100,000 clicks, taking that 1% actually leads to a purchase, that's 1000 items sold etc.
Its the same with spam emails, the more you spam, the more chance there is of someone 'falling' for it.
Also, how many grains of rice in a bag? A standard aid bag of rice weighs 50kg = 15,432 per kg = 771600, is my guess using google.

Sometimes I have doubts about this kind of scheme. Marketers never indulge in gratuitous generosity... the sellers have to make a significant profit from this. The products being sold have to be manufactured also. As "generous donators" of our spare time and clicking , we are probably relying on workers with a less than ideal pay to finance the effort to end world hunger. That's not so bad in itself , though more and more poor workers have to beg their food now , in the western world (varies depending on the country *euphemism*)
What I fear is that the increased demand on those products is just another curse for the rest of the world. Faster stripping of natural resources , more aggressive use of cheap labor by their manufacturers. Unbalanced and weakened local economies , growing dependant on volatile work providers. In the end , we might be kicking someone else's bowl just to give those few grains.
