Currently I have an x850xt PE gfx, unfortunately that doesn't have the required shader model 3.0
Now to my question, which gfx card is the favourable one when played on the new trinity engine. I would more than likely adopt an Nvidia card however the 8800gt seems a little scarse (and pricey as demand and supply dictates) and the HD3870, the ATI offering seems more available and cheaper.
So what kind of difference in perfmance can I expect from the two cards. Will there any details in picture quality from one card to the next.
I am pretty much sure that CCP would have tested the engine out on both platforms, so any info on differences in picture quality,. frame rate or the fact that they run equally well and I should save a few quid and go with ATI, would be appreciated.
Cheers
Ed
*please note this is not the place for any ATI or NVIDIA bashing, I am curious before my purchase which I know a lot people will be on to how these two cards perform so I can make sound judgement upon my purchase.

It really depends on your budget etc either manufacturer should be just fine in trinity 2.0 best bang for buck goes to the radeon hd3870 if you dont care about money go nvidia.

See if i can help Edison.
I have a invidia 8400gts. Got it for a little less than 200$. Simple install, easy drivers and pretty much plug and play.
Roomate has ati x1950. Got his for about 140. Pain in the ass software but saved 60 dollars.
I've had both cards and i'm just a firm believer in Nvidia. Yes you pay more but i seem to have less problems. Maybe ati has more overclocking ease or is for the more advanced but for my money and peace of mind, no to mention nvidia seems dialed in with what you need to play the next gen games, i go invidia. Oh and our gameplay is about the same. I can run 3 characters at once with max settings and he can run 3 with toned down settings.
Our computers are exactly the same, P4 3.2 gig dual. 3 gig ram. 512 vid card. XP PRO. We built them cheap. So hope this helps.

Cheers guys, I would have liked little info on testing both platforms from ccp, I am sure they would have done some kind of testing.
A while ago I believe had a few issues with Nvidia drivers and nvidia wouldnt address the problem. I suppose tho at the time ATI was king. I think I will just spend a little extra and get a 8800gt, just means I wont see trinity this side of Christmas I will have to keep watching it for now in glorius 'un'-technicolor - its served me well for 4 years so meh

Specifics? I have an 8800GTS, and I saw no problems. I run one of the least-supported versions of Windows (Windows XP x64 edition), but EVE worked brilliantly.
However every ati card I've had recently has had various problems, mostly gfx ram (glitches that went away if I used ati-tool to underclock the gfx ram, had this with both a x800gto and a x1900xtx). nullnull |

Im a big ATI fan :) EVE is the only game whitch i have problems with... I have a 1950XT with 256 MB and 2 Accounts are no prob! Even 3 Accounts are possible but a litte bit laggy in lvl 4 missions :) (PS CPU is P4 3,2GHZ and 2G RAM...)
On the new engine i havent seen any problems till now...
My advice: When you play most of your time EVE get a Nvidia, other than that then an ATI :) Ati got the better quality...
But maybe wait a litte bit - maybe Nvidia have problems with the new engine now :D

Wait until there's an official release date to buy your card, then you will be able to gather much more feedback and buy it just in time for trinity and cheaper.
I will only point to you that if you wish to play under linux, there are drivers issues with ATI cards that do not exist with nvidia cards, but anyway, new graphic engine for linux will be out some time after the windows release. -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !

This is exactly the kind of discussion I had in mind when starting the thread. Are there nvidia issues, pros and cons of each etc. Its all good, keep it coming. If you are playing on the test server maybe you could post your set up and how you found gameplay.
Cheers guys

the best and only advice I can give is read these forums and forums of independent review site like Hard OCP and Tom's Hardware before you drop hundreds (or even thousand plus, like the 8800 Ultra) on a video card.

Hi All, I have just installed a 3850, as for me I needed single slot and it is the best / cost at the moment it seems. The only issues I have noticed from it so far (though I have not been on the test server) is that a couple of structure were not showing up properly. I need to do some more testing, and as it is a very new card, I expect a few graphics glitches with the earlier drivers. I am an ATI guy, but as I can see the 8800GT does also seem like a very good option. I think as usual it is all about what you want form it, and how much you want to spend..
Oh, and I am very impressed how quiet mine is... and the performance is 9k+ in 3D Mark, which was just under double I got from the noisy 2600 GDDR4 I sent back!! and for only just over ú100..
Can tell you later in the week how I get on with the new engine if you can wait(would have thought I would see the same as a 3870..)
Hope this helps...

Edited by: Jolliejoe on 30/11/2007 13:27:18 Edited by: Jolliejoe on 30/11/2007 13:26:25 Yes, I have some weird graphical glitches (like solid white framed stargates, missing transparency effect and such) with the latest nVIDIA drivers and my eVGA 8800 GTX but as with all new games/engines, they will probably be fixed very soon.
As far as the best/fasted card to run Trinity there is only one choice... and that is the 8800 GTX. Do you need the fastest card to run Trinity well? Probably not so I guess it is down to everyone's preference.

I recommend not getting the 8800GTX, as the person above me is having problems with it, and I know the 8800GTS and 8800GT are both fine.
All nVidia 8800 cards are shockingly powerful, it doesn't really matter which you get, the rest of your system is likely to hold it back regardless.
If you really must have the best, nVidia are releasing the 8800GTS rev2 in December, and it's more powerful than the current 8800GTX and 8800Ultra. nullnull |

We test on both the nVidia and ATi cards and try to cover all major flavours/series of cards.
We work closely with nVidia (we had one of their reps at Fanfest) and are working on our relationship with ATi.
So it comes down to personal choice.

Reading between the lines makes me think Nvidia may be a better option. I have only ever had ATI cards...

Lately, nVidia has been winning with performance, although they were always a bit more expensive than ATi. However, with ATi's new 3850 and 3870, they (so far) surpass 8800GT in availability and in case of 3870, in price with almost the same performance. \
nVidia uses some dirty tricks with Crysis (so probably in other games, too) to boost their performance at the expense of image quality (frequency of updating water reflections, etc).
ATi is often dragging behind with drivers. Not that nVidia's drivers were perfect; but at least you can update drivers (almost) painlessly. nVidia also spends ****loads of money on developer relations and equipping them with their hardware. AMD/ATi is a smaller company with bright ideas, but enough of their own problems.
I've been nVidia guy (TNT2 -> 440 MX -> 6600 GT -> 6100 -> 7300 GT), but unless they offer 8800GT real cheap or make something new, my purchase in nearest months would be 3850 or 3870.

Currently have a Nvidia 8600gts and I have been having problems with drivers (i hope) for a while. Some of the shadowing is rather jaggly and performance isn't as great as I would like.
I have not tried ATI yet, so I will not comment.
If you go for Nvidia, I wouldn't settle for anything less that a 8800GT tbh. There pretty hard to get hold of atm, but they are definitely worth it from what I have read.
ATI's 3870 is meant to be a great buy, but drivers still need some tweaking to boost their performance from what I understand.

A NVIDIA 8600 goes for $99-$150 on amazon.com, depending on the manufactuer. I brought a 8600 from XFX for just over $120. Theres no point to a 8400/8500, those run WORSE on DX9 then the 7000 series did.

the 7950's are a good deal right now for this game but an 8600+ is good if you will ever use vista i wont so its not worth it.
