They use directional engines now to force them down rather than vent precious (and amazingly expensive) helium. Still not easy but its getting there.
Another idea I've looked into is to throw tow lines to fasten to anchor points that just pull it down. Kind of like a mechanical tractor beam as it were. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

Funnily enough thats how they work.
The tow lines have a big magnet at the end and connect to 6-8-10 anchor points on the landing field which have the polar opposite magnet, they then pull the tow line like chain on a tow bar.
Not steam powered alas but electric.
Cant have it all.
Means the airship comes down at exactly the same elevation and prevents tipping which apparently was an issue for WW1 Zeppelins.
They could flip over when being pulled down by the men.
Think of a shampoo bottle in the bath when they pop up. Same kind of physics apparently. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

Well if you scrub up nice I can offer you a job as a purser.
Mind you, this is 10 years + down the line.
The initial budget for this thing is $25-30mil. The helium alone per year is between $3.1mil - $3.8mil at current market value.
Ive always loved airships, and with the way my firm is going I want to cash out at 40. Sell off my shares and options and then fund this baby.
Want to go Early 1900s romanticism with a smattering of 1910s/20s art deco. All dark woods with rich reds and sage green. Lots of brass or brass alloys to skimp on the weight. Weight is the biggest issue, but I want it to be as authentic as possible with every mod con.
Cool thing about an airship is that actually if you sign a waiver (which you will be required anyway) you can go outside and walk around provided you wrap up. So smoking can be permitted without the need for a smoking room. Allows space saving for more passengers.
As for size atm im not sure. Ideally I'd love hindenburg size, but we dont have enough solar tech yet to compensate for the buoyancy of hydrogen with helium fuel.
In a perfect world I'd love 100+ passengers and between 20-30 crew.
Tickets are probably looking around $10-25k depending on the journey. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

Forget Helium. Hydrogen is where it's at. With todays materials Hydrogen should be safe, it is much cheaper and has better lift than helium. Best thing is, you could create hydrogen on the fly- have your solar powered airship just sit over a lake and make your own hydrogen via electrolysis. Yeah.
Bullcrap. Everybody raises the Hindenburg as an argument against hydrogen airships.
So effing what? The hydrogen exploded, so will the kerosene in today's aircraft, too. Oh, and today's aircraft crash all the time, I'd say at least once per month somewhere on this world an aircraft crashes- but is anyone crying for an end of the aeroplan era? At least after 9/11 people could have screamed that aeroplans are far too dangerous, but nobody did.
For unknown reasons our world is slowly losing helium, helium will be one of the most precious resources within several decades- nobody will be able to afford a whole airship filled with helium, not even Graygor.

It's a listed building, hence the condition. I know the guys that own the shop, if you look above the false ceilings theres still smoke damage visible from when it was partially destroyed by fire in the '80s, out back there's a glass canopy roof that's mostly original. The two upper floors are offices and flats respectively.
