The NPC-mission (and that you often fought them, plus random NPCs, in asteroid-belts! We were "ratting" before it was cool!) and hauling-trader aspects are certainly...similar. I used the latter a lot to move up from the original Tarsus to a Centurion with 4 Tachyonic Cannons, 2 torp. launchers, and Ionic cannons + tractor-beam in the back turret! Omg in Privateer ][ they moved from dynamic realtime explosions to bitmap. *yuck*
I loved Wing Commander I and ][ back then. Never played part ]I[, could be because it already had too many movie sequences, but i can't tell anymore.

Since you are picking games around the correct time.
I have been searching for one I used to play around the time of galactic trader, however to no avail, yes I am too fried up there to remember the damn name.
It was similar in nature to Galactic trader, all I can remember after you warped from planet to planet is when you came in to land, you spiraled around and around the planet until you landed. You could trade commodities etc,
Anyone give me a clue to my past life?
Actually remembrance of this particular game brought me into subbing with EVE 'O' |

Ah yes, Elite and Wing Commander. Good times.
Anyone else remember when Radio Shack (or an equivalent electronics retailer in your country) devoted half the store to displaying joysticks, throttles and flight yokes?

Oh man Privateer 1 is still probably one of my favourite games ever, I highly recommend playing it on dosbox and not the pretty mediocre vegastrike remake that is knocking around.
As for The Darkening, stay well clear. It's not a sequel in any stretch of the imagination and was given the Privateer 2 title very late in its development. I think the two game designers were brothers, Chris and Erin Roberts. There's some stupid intangible link to Priv 1 (a Talon wreck easter egg somewhere) and I recall reading that it's meant ot be set 100 years in the future and in a different sector to space but it's so far ahead nothing except the aforementioned easter egg is recognisable. The gameplay is just awful too, in fact, the only good part about The Darkening I find is the live action cut scenes with a sweet cast and very film-noir and low budget (but in a good way) sci-fi feel.
For Privateer fans I'd recommend this humourous review by Spoony (before he got unfunny and bitter) here: http://spoonyexperiment.com/2010/03/25/privateer-2-the-darkening-review/
He goes over its flaws much more succinctly than I can. |

Elite is literally the reason I am here.
I was messing about on Google and went for "Elite" out of nostalgia.
A few links later I was here at Eve. It's like a nostalgia-w*nk everytime I log in.
Long live Elite. XX |

Almost brought a tear to my eye, I remember messing about with UPPs and character generation on this thing for hours when I was a boy. To busy with other P&P games to get serious about it, but the character generation effects where a game in itself, especially with the ageing and socio-economic changes it made to the character. |

I think it was Elite that I played so long ago on an Amiga 2000. I got hooked on the idea of trading, courier runs, and similar activities, not just the usual dogfight simulation game. Unfortunately the computer system failed not long after I got the game, but it left the idea of the game play in my mind. When I came across Eve, I jumped on the chance to try it out and was pretty much hooked from the start.
