Hi, I've never really done missions, as I find them completely boring and mind numbing. However, I was thinking about things that might make it more exciting and fun.
With the need for speed initiative, I know they are making fewer, more powerful enemies. But I thought maybe there could be friendly ships invovled too, to add some flavor to the battles. That way you'd have explosions going on all around the mission, rather than just having every missile and turret pointed at you in the fight...? Idk, thoughts? --

do you mean NPC allies? Because that would be very cool, maybe even having fleet battles between the mission pirates and the navy or corporation respectively. I think it would be a great idea. _________________________ My Hulk is my baby... |

Years ago I enjoyed playing TIE-Fighter and the always involved friendly NPC that were important for the mission objectives. So I say yes to making missions a bit more tactical.

I have noticed that CCP has added some interesting missions that I hadn't seen before. I recall one mission where the enemy ships were being repaired by an object. You could choose to try to destroy the enemy ships imbetween rep cycles, or destroy the repairing object first.
Another mission had a hazardous environment that caused periodic explosions which damaged your ship at regular intervals. The amount of damage caused grew over time. You had a choice between fitting your ship with an enormous tank to withstand the damage or to fit it for speed to reach your goal before the environment could deal enough damage to destroy your ship.
Add more interesting missions! Mission ideas:
1: As mentioned already, fleet vs fleet battles. 2: Protection missions! You must protect a ship and/or object against waves of enemies! If you fail to protect the object, you could make it so that you have to wait for the mission to respawn before attempting again. 3: Escort missions! Variation on the protection mission - you have to escort a convoy through various systems and/or deadspace pockets.
Essentially, adding NPC allies would allow us to gain a tactical advantage in missions. You would then have to worry about keeping your allies alive, and your reduced combat effectiveness if they die.
Also, imagine the advantage of being able to vary your fittings if your NPC allies filled various fleet roles?
Suppose your NPC allies do your tackling for you? Remove that webber and free a mid slot for heavier tanking or adding in an EW mod!
Suppose they will be remote repping you. Swap out some armor tanking mods for more damage mods or swap out shield tanking mods for EW mods. Perhaps you can also fit a full rack of tachs or neuts with the extra space on your grid and extra cap.
Suppose they will be using energy transferers. Swap out NOS for a tractor/salvager and cap mods for EW.
You get the idea.

Love the idea, and hell yes it would make things much more interesting. Basically you're talking the edge of factional warfare, and I would truly be astounded if we ever saw it from CCP. As frustrating as they could be, the missions in X-Wing/Tie fighter were infinitely more interesting than in EVE, and that's what everyone would love to see....giant space battles with subsystem targetting and clear mission goals with bonus goals that made sense.
Undoubtedly, there is no end of ideas to make missioning much more interesting in general, but this is CCP we're talking about here, so GFL on that one. =)

NO!
New, as in original. Improved, as in based on an existing design.

NO! NO! NO!, having the missions success depending on you defending some crappy AI "friendly" that you cant defend because bad AI makes charges into the middle of the biggest pack of bad guys and getting itself wtfbbqpwned does not make it more tactical it makes it more crap.
If you want tougher missions we need to beg CCP into making NPC ships as tough as the ones we fly and only having 1 maybe 2 in a mission like "kill the marauding pirate" and its a fully equipped to a players standard and you would need tactics similar to pvp to take it out.

Edited by: Rawr Cristina on 03/12/2007 00:28:19 I love this idea, both friendly and hostile NPCs slugging it out would be great to see and add a LOT of variation to your mission setups, being that you wouldn't always be the focus of fire
It would also make it possible to fail missions (other than letting them time out), which is something we don't currently have (but should)
oh the idea of player-like NPCs is something I also brought up before. If the NPCs functioned like actual player-mimicing AIs rather than being as predictable and and dumb as they are now, it would very much strengthen the playing experience.
Missions are far too boring right now and NEED much more variation if they're to be made bearable. -----

Fleet battles would definitely be awesome. Imagine the pirates duking it out in Worlds Collide, then you just go in, weapons blazing. There could also be missions where friendly NPC ships (i.e. Caldari Navy) are heavily outnumbered by pirate ships, and as soon as you warp into the sector, the commander of the friendly fleet sends you a video communication requesting assistance. Your mission rewards are directly related to how many friendly ships you could keep alive. If this type of NPC fleet action gets implemented, it'll definitely be a sight to behold.

Damn, I just might start mission running if they became as interesting as some of the suggestions. Admittedly, AI defense could get annoying, since NPCs often do very stupid things, especially when they're not supposed to die.
But fighting alongside friendly NPCs? Taking part in big NPC vs NPC fleet battles? That would be awesome, a great way to fill the time when not much else is going on.
