Indeed... I patched two systems and rebooted one because of lag. Unfortunately, it didn't come backup so I had to recover the boot.ini file from a backup. Checked the other system and it was missing there as well. After restoring the boot.ini and doing a search, the only other boot.ini file I could find was C:\Program Files\CCP\Eve\boot.ini.

Yes, I applied the premium patch and now my windows boot.ini file is gone. The patch appears to delete it during the patching process instead of EVE's boot.ini.

XP64 here.
In your case just backup your boot.ini - run the installer, and if it's not where it should be after you installed, just restore the copy of boot.ini that you have. Just make sure you don't reboot until you do this!

the CCP boot.ini file in the eve install folder looks to be a config file for the premium, and it sounds like it only affects people applying that.

I do not guarantee this fix for anyone.
If you make a new boot.ini and put this text in
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
Save it, and then run MSConfig from the Run box. Under the Boot.ini tab, click the "check all boot paths" to verify that you should at least be able to boot back up from one viable OS.
Otherwise read the MS technet article someone linked.
This is a pretty big FUBAR really. Bad press inbound.

For most setups that use the primary hard-drive with one single partition and Windows installed at c:\Windows ( you can change that below accordingly ) this ( as posted above ) will work fine for you:
Go to Start, click run and type: notepad C:\boot.ini
Because this has been freshly deleted, it will ask if you would like to create it, obviously click yes.
Now paste the following in to the text file, and save it:
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
I'm not sure if this is important, but also do the following, click Start and click Run, then type: attrib +S +H +R c:\boot.ini
Goodluck, hope this helps.

Again we get to see how and why CCP devs are the most incompetent in the industry. Maybe they should actually start taking classes on how to actually do programming. So far I've found over 10 bugs in less then one hour in the game and only undocking 3 times LOL. I'd love to see a Dev try to say they have a quality control department. LMAO

Well, there's a way to toy with it.
**** THIS MAY NOT WORK AND IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR PEOPLE WHO AREN'T FAMILIAR WITH WHERE THE STEPS TAKE YOU ****
Be warned: I am not taking responsibility for further messing up your system. Be careful, be wise! If this seems a little trick to you don't do it.
This will only work for Windows XP Professional as I am using tools only found in XP Professional. In all reality, you should be booting into the repair console for this!
1. Go to start, right click on 'My Computer' and click Manage. 2. Once the management console is open, go to Disk Management. It could take a few seconds to load.
In the disk management you have two parts: A top part indicating all the partitions and driver letters, and a bottom part showing you the partitions and drives ordered by disk number, and then by partition locations.
3. Find what disk number your windows installation is on (for example, mine is on the C: partition, the first partition on disk 0)
Disk 0 Partition 1 should be the typical location where your windows install is. However, I can't possibly guarantee this is it.
5. Open up notepad (start, run, notepad, click ok) and paste in the following:
Quote: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(YOUR DISK #)partition(YOUR PARTITION #)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(YOUR DISK #)rdisk(0)partition(YOUR PARTITION #)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
There are two things you should notice: disk() and partition(). now set these to what you discovered in step 3, and set them both for the default switch and the operating system entry.
7. Save your boot.ini on the installation drive 8. Click Start, Run, and type in MSCONFIG 9. Select the "BOOT.INI" tab 10. Click "Check all Boot Paths"
If it gives you the OK, you should be in the clear. If it says the boot path is invalid, I recommend taking a few steps back and playing with the boot.ini more.
This is the process I did to get mine back. It will likely differ from yours, so fair warning.

just copy paste it into root after patching, and rename it to "boot.ini"(no quotes), should be good to go, FYI, i have not tested this resolution, so if anyone wants to try it...

^^^^ nice start
This is seriously one of the dumbest things I've seen a developer do. Sucks that one of your best patches yet has to be tainted by such a colossal mess-up, but you better do something quick or you're going to have a major trainwreck on your hands.
Oddly enough I wasn't hit by it even though I'm a prime candidate (Windows XP user with EVE installed on my main hard disk), I have XPized my system so I wonder if that's what spared me?

Save it, and then run MSConfig from the Run box. Under the Boot.ini tab, click the "check all boot paths" to verify that you should at least be able to boot back up from one viable OS.
I use Windows MCE and I used a similar method to the one above, but instead of making a new boot.ini from scratch I located this file:-
boot.ini.backup ( look in C:\WINDOWS\pss )
copy & paste this file to root directory ( the drive that your OS is installed on, usually C:\ ) and then rename it to boot.ini Run msconfig and click the "check all boot paths" to verify. Reboot, hold breath... and *bingo*
Worked for me

start, control panel, system, advanced, startup and recovery, edit, save as all files 'boot.ini' under your boot drive (C:\ for me and most of you).
Rebooted and it's golden. However, this will only work if you haven't rebooted already. If you rebooted.. uh.. you probably won't be able to click the start menu through the command prompt and will have to resort to the repair methods mentioned elsewhere. --- lol.. I messed up.

not sure if anyone has suggested this, but you could use EasyBCD to create your own bootloader (or edit the one you have if you run Vista on a partition.
I use it all the time when I install an XP partition as it wipes the loader out every time. Pretty easy to use and you can manipulate the entries around pretty easily, too.

Turning Hidden Files to 'show all' on my comp is still not showing boot.ini on the root drive, to confirm if yours is intact, open up notepad, File->open "c:\boot.ini" presuming C:\ is your os intall drive, wich it prlby is... if its there its fine, If not, ive pasted a working example, this is a two disk system, with a single partition on each disk, and should be trouble free for anyone with that setup.
Quote: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

you can type "edit boot.bak" in at the command prompt and resave it as boot.ini i've not tested the restart yet but it should work
hope this helps

Vista people are telling XP people that it's not broken without knowing that Vista doesn't use a boot.ini file. I still say that CCP starts using that "hey, we're shutting down a node" pop-up pronto to save the users that have been on since 9pm eastern time checking out the graphics and pew-pew'ing.

Perhaps this will help if the dev's are still reading this thread. I caught wind of this bug right before installing the graphics update.
I sat and watched the patch process and watch the boot.ini file disappear from the director. (I made a back up before hand)
This is from the installation logs.
Output folder: C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE Delete file: \boot.ini <<<<<<------- HELLO!???? OOPS? Extract: boot.ini... 100% Extract: manifest.dat... 100% Extract: resDX9.stuff... 100% Extract: resDX9Amarr.stuff... 100% ..... and so on

how you could not name the ccp boot.ini something like trinity.ini or lest make sure your installer had a specified path to check for the ccp boot.ini instead of deleting windows systems files is almost staggering.

If you have guys that installed this and have not rebooted get them before they do in case they are unable to reboot.
People are going to come home from work/school tomorrow and have dead/crippled machines.
CCP: you need to put the word out, don't hide behind your lawyers with your click thru EULA that says your not responsible for damages done.
Tell people before they log out. I just nuked 3 of 4 of my virtual machines I use for testing software and had to recover boot.ini files.
2 would no longer boot and 1 threw errors at boot. 1 was unaffected.

hey.. upon instaall, and a restart my xp wouldnt boot. 'missing or corrupt hal.dll file' luckily i had a dual boot with osx on so i did some research... found a possible solution for this problem.. (it seems to be working for me)
boot from his xp cd and press R to repair, follow the instructions on screen untill you see a command line. this fixes the error with a; ' missing/corrupt{backslash}system32{backslash}hal.dll ' (i am using a mac keyboard and cant find the backslash key for xp).
1. Then type in ' bootcfg {space} /rebuild'
2.Press 'y'
3.Type in the version of xp that he has - ie; 'Windows XP Home Edition' (or proffessional if he has that)
4.Leave the next box blank (just press enter)
5.Type 'exit' to quit the setup and restart his pc.
6.Use the first item on the boot menu if it appears.
and Hopefully it should fix it, it seems to be working ok for me 'touch wood'. I hope this works... Oli.
send me a eve mail if this works for anyone else..

Wow, this is bad.
The reason why this didnt get passed QA:
The sisi version didn't do this, this is something they just decided to put in on the live patch for unknown reasons, I wonder what the reason for deleting the boot.ini in the CCP folder was in the first place.
I bet it was cosmetic, if the boot.ini file wasn't going to be used anymore, there is little harm in a 2kb file sitting in the base EVE directory.

Its in the root of your C:/ drive. As in, C:/boot.ini
The file is used to determine where to look for operating system startup files.
You can rebuild it easily by using the XP recovery console.
Just boot from your XP CD. Give it your admin password (assuming you remember it)..
At the prompt, type bootcfg /rebuild
and then type fixboot
** magic happens **
Reboot your computer and quit whining.

Remaking the boot.ini isn't too hard, there are good instructions in this thread. You probably have a backup at C:\windows\pss\boot.ini.bak
If you're worried about the hal.dll problem that some have mentioned, try running this command in a shell or at the run prompt:
sfc /scannow
It is supposed to check all windows files. It isn't real informative whilst it runs, but it did ask for my Windows CD as it was running which it usually does not do. Couldnt get it to tell me whether it was fixing hal.dll or not. But in any case running it won't hurt and might save some pain.
good luck

I think the people getting bit by this are the ones with a single HDD and a single partition to wich theyve installed both the OS and Eve, when the install goes after eves boot.ini file the pointer is hitting the root drive. This may be a bad pointer right in the installer, because by all rights, i shouldnt still have a boot.ini in D:\EVE\, but its there still as well...

Actually this happened to me like 2 days before the patch went live on my laptop with SISI, I had no idea it was related to EVE though.

Delete the ".backup" extension so teh file is named "boot.ini" 4. Copy your brand new shiny boot.ini to your root directory. (in most cases c:\)

Edited by: TheDevilsJury on 06/12/2007 05:22:12 I didn't write this, but I'm going to crosspost this from the goonswarm forums, as I think it's pretty important. This bug does not affect windows Vista. It also does not affect you if your eve installation is on a different drive/partition from your windows installation.
IF YOU HAVEN'T INSTALLED YET INSTRUCTIONS
DO THIS BEFORE YOU RUN THE PREMIUM INSTALLER. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU CAN SEE A BOOT.INI IN EXPLORER OR NOT
Save a Backup Copy of Boot.ini 1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. 2. On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery. 3. Under System Startup, click Edit. This opens the file in Notepad ready for editing. 4. In Notepad, click File on the Menu bar, and then click Save As. 5. Save a copy as "boot.bak"
After you install the premium update, if you try to repeat the steps above and you're hosed, you'll get an error message that boot.ini is gone around step 2.
Go to the Start Menu->Run... Run command cd .. cd .. rename boot.bak boot.ini
And your system will be back to normal.
I just verified that this happened on my own system. Although I have it set to show invisible files there was no boot.ini file visible in either Explorer or the shell before. Nevertheless, after running the updater I got the error at step 2 above.
IF YOU ALREADY INSTALLED WITHOUT BACKING UP INSTRUCTIONS
Two choices:
IF YOU HAVEN'T REBOOTED YET, YOU CAN FIX IT FROM WINDOWS
Quote: To fix:
Open notepad.
copy in:
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
with whatever os you have.
go to "save as" and make sure you change it to all files (otherwise you end up with boot.ini.txt) and save as c:\boot.ini.
go to start->run->cmd
enter "attrib +s +h +a boot.ini" when at the c:\ prompt
to verify, go to start->run->msconfig and there should be a tab for boot.ini
IF YOU REBOOTED AND YOUR SYSTEM DOESN'T BOOT ANYMORE:
Quote: Boot from your OS cd. and follow the directions to start Recovery Console. Choose the corresponding number asked of you for your OS is on, normally its #1 Then type:
Attrib -H -R -S C:\Boot.ini DEL C:\Boot.ini BootCfg /Rebuild Fixboot

IF YOU DID NOT DL THE PREMIUM PATCH BUT ARE WORRIED BECAUSE YOU CANT FIND YOUR BOOT.INI
use your internet explorer web bromser whatev
type the following in your address bar
C:\boot.ini
if a text file opens up that look like this
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
you got a boot.ini and your safe sleep tight

Interesting thread.
I'll chime in with some equally interesting information: I uninstalled EVE prior to downloading the new (classic) client. I then installed the new (classic) client, ran it, quit the client. Downloaded the classic-to-premium upgrade, ran it, and started EVE. No issues of course.
Yet my boot.ini remains intact:
C:\>dir /a C:\boot.ini Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is 1C7C-7447
Directory of C:\
09/12/2007 21:23 211 boot.ini 1 File(s) 211 bytes 0 Dir(s) 28,532,482,048 bytes free
So it appears to me this bug is only affecting some people. Possibly there's an issue with some string parser where it's using strrchr() instead of strchr() on "\". Shot in the dark...

Before you guys do anything make sure you actually have the file or not. With the windows explorer go to C:\(or whatever drive you installed windows). Then go check if you have system file hidden or not by going into the folder option menu(located under tools), click view and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". If your file shows then np, else you must try the solutions posted earlier.

right click My computer> go to Properties> Advanced tab> setup & recovery> edit> save the file that opens.
This restores the boot.ini from windows memory and unless something else was deleted it should fix the problem

So not really.
Fortunately I decided to stay up late and didn't turn off my computer yet. My boot.ini was gone too, even though the Premium install failed (not enough space on disk). NB I have to reinstall whole EVE precisely because I ran out of disk space - the installer didn't have any safe solution to such a simple problem and just borked the game :|

Such a statement is completely meaningless legally. There is still nothing stopping them from being sued.
If the statement was actually enforceable, for example, if the EVE client somehow caused computers to explode, killing their operators, CCP would not be liable.

So not really.
Such a statement is completely meaningless legally. There is still nothing stopping them from being sued.
Now imagine if someone sues ccp and makes them go bankrupt and they have to kill Eve... I think r/l threats are the least the sue(er) will have to worry about
BTW... I get off work in 20 mins, if I go redownload the whole client will I get the nifty new graphics or am I currently boned till it gets fixed?

The contents are correct/what they should be.
And no, the classic/premium upgrade patch is still unavailable. So the version I got was the same as what everyone else got. :-)
I'm betting it's because I install the game into D:\Games\CCP\EVE, so it probably tried to delete D:\boot.ini, which obviously doesn't exist.
EDIT: I stand corrected, sounds like the patch is back up. Maybe it's been fixed. I'm sure CCP will post something soon.
EDIT 2: Nope, patch is still unavailable from the look of it. http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/eveclassictopremiumpatch45017.exe not found. :-)

So, I just downloaded and installed the patch on my XP Home Edition computer, the boot.ini file is exactly where it was pre-patch (I had a backup just in case). At what point in the patch process is this file being deleted?
Or
Has this been fixed?

If like me, you have SP1 windows OEM disc which does not include a repair utility,
you can try making a new file, calling it "boot.ini" save as all files in your C:\ directory with the following text in it:
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
But, probably better to do the restore.

I tend to support CCP through long patches, etc. because their product is just so good. But this, this is amateurish and unprofessional to the extreme, putting something out that damages the customer's computer. All the fixes listed are well and good, but a lot of the customer base is non-techie and screwing around with install discs, rewriting system files, etc. is something they just don't know how to do.
Maybe releasing it a few hours early was not smart. Get your act together, CCP, this is really poor customer service. Really poor.

Confirming that the fixes in this thread worked. Thanks to everyone here and those who helped me--I'm like a blind man trying to pick a redhead out of a crowd of bald women when it comes to PC-related stuff, and this would have basically ended my ability to use my computer until I finished completely unpacking my house after my recent move (probably several weeks from now).
As for CCP, not much to say that hasn't been said already. This is truly a colossal ****-up, and frankly it's a crying shame that the positive press this patch should have generated will instead be overshadowed by this completely and totally unnecessary glitch. ____________________ GM Sunshine > oops Neurotica > Hate to see a GM in your gang say 'oops'

So not really.
Such a statement is completely meaningless legally. There is still nothing stopping them from being sued.
If the statement was actually enforceable, for example, if the EVE client somehow caused computers to explode, killing their operators, CCP would not be liable.
Depending on what country you live in an EULA is not legally binding. Since you have to first purchase the product before you can "sign" the contract. They also in many cases contradict consumer rights, and provider obligation legislation.
As for suing CCP over this, you would have to either lose a large ammount of expensive data and be very vindictive; or, have very deep pockets and a lot of free time.
Finally. People don't make windows partitions anymore? ---

Worked for me, I copied the boot.ini before patching, and pasted it back afterwards. Rebooted and everything is still working. Problem is, you need to know this BEFORE you patch, won't help all the poor sods that already patched and lost it. I sincerely hope everyone is able to fix the issue before rebooting, or they're in for a big nasty suprise :/
Yeah, I got a bit of warning from a friend and gave it some thought on the train home.

Thats the best idea for keeping the file alive! There is also a backup copy in the Windows folder as well. See the above posts for locations.
Not that I can find. XP Pro SP2 OEM, all system and hidden files/folders view options enabled (good godsdamn there's a lot of crap in the windows folder) and I can not find said boot.ini.backup or a /pss folder. I would think that's an option, something the user would have had to enabled beforehand. Something to do with updates or auto-system restore (settings I have disabled).

PLZ NOTE THIS IS NOT CORRECT. THE FULL INSTALL IS NOT SAFE! IT DOES DELETE THE BOOT.INI. I just did the full install lucky i kept checking.

What is the precise filename of the file you downloaded that caused you to experience the issue?
Had you used a premium patch on the test server earlier?
These answers will help CCP narrow down the issue.

wow, really glad i checked here before patching.
i havnt seen this anywhere, so for those who have already patched and dont have a backup boot.ini, heres mine (works for windows xp professional). just copy and past into a notepad file and save it as boot.ini in the c directory. "[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin " hope this can help someone, and CCP, if your monitering this RELEASE A FREEKING STATEMENT ALREADY!!!! just fess up and make damn sure to apologise to all those clients of yours whos computers are not not working.
why is there still not a banner on the main page stating in big red flashing bold text to not install the upgrades and to check your system if you already have?

- 2 hours on phone with Dell customer support as I receive step-by-step instructions on how to remove the HD from my laptop = $6
- Generic piece of crap 2.5" External HD Enclosure at Microcenter so I can pull the Powerpoint file of the presentation I have to make in less than 10 hours = $52.49
- Not having to explain to my boss that my presentation was lost due to an online game I play = priceless
Wish my OS Recovery CDs weren't a couple thousand miles away. Oh well. Thanks for the most magical patch experience ever CCP
