For most setups that use the primary hard-drive with one single partition and Windows installed at c:\Windows ( you can change that below accordingly ) this ( as posted above ) will work fine for you:

Go to Start, click run and type: notepad C:\boot.ini

Because this has been freshly deleted, it will ask if you would like to create it, obviously click yes.

Now paste the following in to the text file, and save it:

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]

I'm not sure if this is important, but also do the following, click Start and click Run, then type: attrib +S +H +R c:\boot.ini

CCP, you need to take down your patch now until it gets this fixed. To your average windows user this will kill their computer and they won't know how to fix the problem.

Be warned: I am not taking responsibility for further messing up your system. Be careful, be wise! If this seems a little trick to you don't do it.

This will only work for Windows XP Professional as I am using tools only found in XP Professional. In all reality, you should be booting into the repair console for this!

1. Go to start, right click on 'My Computer' and click Manage.
2. Once the management console is open, go to Disk Management. It could take a few seconds to load.

In the disk management you have two parts: A top part indicating all the partitions and driver letters, and a bottom part showing you the partitions and drives ordered by disk number, and then by partition locations.

3. Find what disk number your windows installation is on (for example, mine is on the C: partition, the first partition on disk 0)

Disk 0 Partition 1 should be the typical location where your windows install is. However, I can't possibly guarantee this is it.

5. Open up notepad (start, run, notepad, click ok) and paste in the following:

There are two things you should notice: disk() and partition(). now set these to what you discovered in step 3, and set them both for the default switch and the operating system entry.

7. Save your boot.ini on the installation drive
8. Click Start, Run, and type in MSCONFIG
9. Select the "BOOT.INI" tab
10. Click "Check all Boot Paths"

If it gives you the OK, you should be in the clear. If it says the boot path is invalid, I recommend taking a few steps back and playing with the boot.ini more.

This is the process I did to get mine back. It will likely differ from yours, so fair warning.

For those of us technically capable its nothing big. However those people out there who are not, this could be a large issue with. As a software developer myself, I have to laugh at CCP for making one very big mistake, you never screw up your end users machine. This is why we actually have QUALITY CONTROL in software teams. Clearly it is evident that alot of people were not doing their jobs because of this.

I seem to remember an Anarchy Online beta patch nuking people's...Win2k? installations, and also uninstalling Myth 2 could gut your OS while it was at it.

So yeah, this isn't exactly a first, but it's pretty goddamned terrible for CCP's SUPER EPIC HUGEST BEST PATCH EVER.

I'm not one to defend bad programming, but to be fair, Sierra Games had an uninstaller that would remove your Program Files directory, so it does happen. Obviously it sucks, and quality control should have caught it. (yes it was the uninstaller, not just installing the game, but still).

The reason why this didnt get passed QA:

The sisi version didn't do this, this is something they just decided to put in on the live patch for unknown reasons, I wonder what the reason for deleting the boot.ini in the CCP folder was in the first place.

I bet it was cosmetic, if the boot.ini file wasn't going to be used anymore, there is little harm in a 2kb file sitting in the base EVE directory.

fix the boot.ini

it gives you a way to fix it without needing your disk, it worked for me... no idea if this has been posted already, sorry if it has. i havnt rebooted yet... im about to, i will respond if it works ; p... if it doesnt, you can assume im lost forever :(

to verify, go to start->run->msconfig and there should be a tab for boot.ini

Quality Control isn't as easy as it seems... In fact it is a real royal pain to deal with everyones screw ups and head aches... Once in a while, QC even screws up themselves. Things happen, move on with life. I QC in a machine shop, in the production end of things, I deal with screw ups on a daily basis... And I make some mistakes myself, no one is ever perfect.

Been a while since i kinda messed with duel OS, but im pretty sure that it loads, and depending on which OS u load it tells which boot.ini to load.

Pretty sure its a, i wanna load windows, ok use this... kinda thing.

Be safe, make sure your boot.ini is ok!
