i can confirm i had updated to the premium content before 0400 and had restarted the system at least twice without the boot.ini file and the system didnt complaint nor do i had any problem, file wasnt there although i rewrote it anyway and placed on his place, im using winxp+sp2 sample boot.ini:
[boot loader] timeout=0 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
note this info is only valid if your operating system is indeed in the 1st partition of first disk and your system in c:\windows

To all you people mad at CCP, they start this incredible game and have 50,000+ people satisfied daily. All running on one server. There is bound to be problems along the way, so cut them some slack. At the most the QA dept. and the coder responsible for this error should be talked to about being careful.

I have XP Pro 64bit and it got me. I have no Boot.ini
The hard part is that I have a dual-boot system and I never saved a copy of the Boot.ini
This should be fun.

Edited by: Ulcha Ghanis on 06/12/2007 16:30:20 Update on my situation re boot.ini and all that... after many hours following several advice routes (some here, and other MS help sites) i had no success, my laptop remains in a limbo state and refuses to boot, After visiting a 'large and reputable' PC dealership / repair shop... I was told that to have my lovely lovely lappy returned to full shiny working glory would cost me ú129 (uk pounds) i was needless to say, quite shocked that my machine had been put into a state of 'non-working-ness' that could cause such a hefty bill... I declined their offer and have decided to try and muster onward.

Originally by: Behedwin Is there a way to find out if i need to do the "fix" steps and create a new boot.ini file?
My ini file is located at c:/ still. but it have /NoExecute=OptIn in the end of the document and ccp¦s file do not have that. the rest is exact.
Btw i have eve installed on F: and windows on C: does that change anything?
As my boot.ini file already excist i could not save a nother one at the same location. should i replace it and do all the steps ccp want me to do or am i fine?
thx
Because you have EVE installed on F: it tried to delete boot.ini on F:. So you're fine and don't have to do anything to fix this, because nothing got broken.

You are correct, and I agree with you. But deleteing the Boot.ini...Kind of a big oversight.

Wife checked and the BOOT.INI is missing so what do I need to do now as it's not clear for those who have already booted back up?

I'll be at least a week, probably MONTHS restoring my PC.
I WANT AT LEAST 3 MONTHS FREE GAMETIME OR I'VE BEEN _SCREWED_
Thanks for ruining Xmas, CCP :(
Same exact thing happened to me.. Same exact!
You should have read their instructions correctly then.

Sigh, i never thought i would have seen so many eve players trolling, do you guys want CCP to get shut down?, accidents happen, and it just has, people need to stop complaining and start helping each other on how to get this sorted, the guides ccp have posted should work perfectly for anyone with half a brain, and if you cant do it, DONT WORRY, your computer isnt wrecked, and your windows is still there just as you left it, just ask a friend who knows abit about PCs to come round, and he will have you back up in no time (or if your really struggling, download a copy of a Live linux distro on a spare PC, whack it in ya pc, when at desktop just create a INI file from there and drop it on your XP partition. CCP guys, hope you sort this out, best of look finding a fix.

If you were able to boot with no problems, you're fine. Chances are you are one of the unaffected: Vista users, Mac or Linux, people with windows on a different partition than eve, classic client only, or really damn lucky. Check yourself as boot.ini may be a hidden file. Easiest way is to use the command prompt, cd down to the C:\> and then type boot.ini and hit enter. That should open up a notepad file. If it doesn't and you don't fit the list of the unaffected, then follow the procedure to replace or rebuild boot.ini

Some problems? Yes.
Gross boneheadedness? no..
Anything that doesn't run properly, while sucking, is tolerable.
Anything that causes your machine to not function is so far over the line of incompetence, that it defies gravity.
If you don't understand this distinction, you are not up for evolutionary selection.

Well this notofication came a bit late.
Updated my XP SP2 yeaterday, logged on for a short time, then shut down my laptop. Fortunately no problem when booting again today.
I updated Eve, but was told that my (crap-) system did not support premium content. Maybe that's what saved my cut little butt.

Am I right? And that "hall.dll" file which some ppl said they lost and now is missing. I think proper answer is required. No time for spam ...
because most people run xp as an admin - despite every piece of advice to the contrary - admin users can over-write just about anything - and DEFINITELY everything with a reboot!
Well you must agree that games are NOT supposed to bugger sytem files at all ... That was my point. In that relation I know what the difference between an admin and user is.

Originally by: Crisztian I'm sorry, but you have to be ******* ******** to blame anyone for this disaster other then ccp.Unfortunatly no everyone is a computer expert and may not know that you need to back up your file every 5 ******* minutes.
Well, when even "Sex and the city" has an episode dealing with backups and failed computers, you can kind of assume the knowledge has gone outside of just the computer expert area and into the general public.
When I was in school I just use to mail important stuff to my hotmail account, next to storing them on a USB stick. That way I had two places I could access the files from at school as well as instant backups. And given the number of hotmail accounts and sticks/mp3 players sold, you can hardly claim you have to be a computer expert to use them.

I'm just happy that the crash bugs in Trinity didn't result in this issue. I believe the bugs are only when in fullscreen mode, but EVE froze up the PC two times last night, full non-responder freeze, and had the reset done this, as well as a reboot, I would have had a dead PC due to two serious bugs, instead of just one. |

ppl at ccp did one hell of a good job, its sad a little final mistake in deployment is spoiling one of the most awaited dates on the gaming world, i remember the first win2k installer in 1999 erasing partition table data <- that would be a real problem

People have every right to be upset. If people use their computers for work then ccp may have just ****** them royally. There's the dude who's English Paper is due today and is now probably going to fail his course. You think for these people it matters if CCP gets shut down or not? I love EVE, I really do, and I would love to see it not being destroyed by this, but this is one of the dumbest things I have ever seen a company do... ever. And they are going to pay the consequences for it.

Hmmm no I don't think I was lucky as the BOOT.INI file is missing when I went looking for it.
So how does one add it back to where the little bugger is meant to be?
