For users who have rebooted their computers after installing the Classic to Premium patch:
1. Boot from your OS cd and follow the directions to start Recovery Console. You must be logged in as the machine's local administrator. 2. Choose the corresponding number asked of you for your OS is on, normally its #1 Then type: * Attrib -H -R -S C:\Boot.ini * DEL C:\Boot.ini * BootCfg /Rebuild * Fixboot
Thank you very much for your help, it worked for me.
Yesterday night i upgraded both my pc (XP home SP2) and my nbook Dell (XP Home SP2) before 04.00 . Today my pc booted normally, even without any boot.ini in route: my nbook didnŠt boot presenting this message : root\system32\hal.dll is missing or corrupt, please re-install.
After a quick search on the web , I confirmed that HAL.DLL was related to the boot.ini missing. So the above info from Eve worked fine for my nbook.
Just to be sure I restored a previous configuration on my pc end reinstalled Eve from zero. Now I have a boot.ini (hidden) on my pc, but I still donŠt see any boot.ini in the route on my nbook, even if itŠs booting normally. The only boot.ini I can find is in C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE, and itŠs related to Eve ......boh.

Some people talked about fixing XP within XP using a boot disk from bootdisk.com, but honestly I have no idea how do that. I'm sitting on a crappy laptop now, with my computer stuck in the vicious reboot-cycle.
I appriciate any help!
EDIT: Oh yeah, my Boot Menu recognizes my USB drive when I plug in my iPOD, so I'm wondering if I could use my iPOD as a boot disk of some sort? dunno how though
http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=651679&page=41#1212
download the file, uncompress, place a diskette, execute exe, insert diskette into the laptop, boot to the diskette, copy boot.ini into your root filesystem
Thanks for the advice, but I don't have a floppy drive on my laptop. But that does sound like the easiest way of doing it. Now I just need a floppy disk and a friend with a floppy drive. Better than nothing. :)

No. Your computer is simply missing the file it needs to start up. If that file is restored the computer should work fine again.

Let me add that my Windows XP installer CD did NOT work. I never made it to the 'repair utility' or whatever. Once it started booting from the CD-ROM it only got so far before BSOD'ing 'windows has encountered a problem and go **** yourself the end'
What I did: I took the hard disk out this morning and took it to work where I very covertly borrowed a USD hard disk casing. I fired up a second computer and attached this "USB drive" to replace the boot.ini manually. This worked for me, but maybe not an option for many people.

And people wonder why they should ever upgrade to Vista...so accidents like this one wont kill your computer

Maybe because 17/18 patches and upgrades from CCP have been rather flawless? And remember it got fixed some 2hrs after the official DT was over.

So I got the patch done....... briefly gawped at the lovely graphics, then turned off my PC and went to bed.
Now I've turned my PC on.... and its working... logged on eve and been directed to this thread and I'm confused as hell tbh ' I've enabled all the 'show hidden / show system' type settings and there does not appear to be a boot.ini file
So, should my PC be functioning at all? do I need to make a new boot.ini file? Do those funny settings in the boot.ini need tweaking cos I've got multiple HDDs and partitions?
Is my PC gonna die horribly if I turn it off?
I've ploughed through a handful of the early pages and frankly I'm confused as hell and very very nervous

Edited by: Hawk Firestorm on 06/12/2007 18:15:22 Edited by: Hawk Firestorm on 06/12/2007 18:12:18 There is of course one small problem you CCP boys are going to have to address.
Most peeps don't have more than one PC, aren't technically minded and for those that have rebooted won't see any of this because all they are looking at now is a no boot partition msg.
Someone over there must be in very hot water right now considering the possible liability's.
And why in the the heck is eve messing with a Windows system file or have any file with a file named as one anywhere in it? This is pretty basic stuff, you'd be well advised to change your naming convention and prefix all files with EVEFile.x then nothing like this can ever happen again.
@Fatbloke if it's not broke dun fix it. :)

NO, it's all been fixed. And keeping the client and OS separated on different disks, and using Sp2 keeps you out of the dangerzone.

No you will be fine, it only affected: 1. upgrades of old eve client then upgrade to premium content 2. if you had eve on the same drive as your windows 3. WinXP and above conditions
