The Boot.ini tells Windows XP, 2000, and NT 4.0 where to find it's boot files from.
Example of Boot.ini for a XP machine with IDE drive.
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="mICROSOFT wINDOWS xp" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT
If that doesn't work.. Try this version of the boot.ini [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="mICROSOFT wINDOWS xp" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT
Thanks to the person that shared the second version of the boot.ini
The second version should be used for Dell systems and HP. They usually have Windows installed on the second partition.
Take that and save it as Boot.ini
Then... Use these directions at another working system to create a boot floppy. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305595
After you create the floppy, put it into the floppy drive and boot the down system. Make sure the Floppy drive comes first in the boot order before the harddrive. This can usually be changed by pushing f12 on a dell system or by going into the bios.
Once the system is up, copy the boot.ini off of the floppy to C:|
Remove the floppy and you should be back in business.
My example of the boot INI should work for a system that is booting off the first ide drive with windows installed on the first partition.
Good Luck..
And to the Developers of EVE.. I have never had a game patch take down my system before. :(

I run Windows 2003 Standard Server on my workstation, and they OS freaks out right after the splash screen finishes. Luckily I don't run apps as an administrator. Wow, just wow... what the heck are you doing reading/writing from system/boot folders?
Patch needed immediately.

As someone who's recently worked on an installer for a program, we had our QA team test the darned thing literally a few hundred times, I am curious to learn how such a thing actually got through to the final release version :) Did someone forget to check in a file in sourcesafe? :)

I am running XP Home Edition and still seem to have the C:\boot.ini file there. Notepad reads its contents as:
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
Does this mean that it is ok to reboot or is this just an artifact from the original system boot?
I HAVE downloaded the graphics upgrade overnight so does this mean that CCP have already fixed the issue or have I just been VERY lucky?

XP Pro, IDE --- [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn ---
save what is between --- and --- system32 hal.dll might be worth backing up as well :)
System restore point would be good, if u have not installed it, no rush ?

My comp booted the first time and it said missing boot.ini but still booted. I used these suggested repairs now my windos dont reboot it goes to windows\system32\hal.dll missing. I can't seem to get into bios, I can't move the fking arrow for options in boot menu, I can't prompt the boot from cd when it pops up.
WTF! This is on gateway media center.

The dell boot.ini text looks pretty accurate. Ive saved another boot.ini file on my C: drive. I wonder if thats all I need to do or if theres something else i have to do to tell windows to get information from that file?
This might be a result of one of CCP's bloody crooked devs. If so, then slapping them on the wrist just wont cut it this time.

Same here. I have 3 drives, one with 2 partitions, and I installed Windows on one, programs on another, data on a third and use the 4th for downloads. So far no issues but I'm still going to back up the 2 files mentioned just in case the worst does happen.

I hope this is a wake up call to everyone that you should not be running as a system administrator when using Windows on a day to day biases.
The only reason I'm still using this PC is because I run as a regular User normally, and Fast User Switch to an Administrator account when I need to update/install something.

boot.ini is initially hidden, you can either:
a) Go to start->run and type: notepad c:\boot.ini
If this comes up with text and not asking you to make a new file cos it doesn't exist... well then it's there.
b) Go to start->run and type: cmd Then type: cd\ <press enter> then type: attrib <press enter>
It will show a list of files and their attributes, boot.ini should be there.

boot.ini is a hidden system file and will by default NOT show up in your search results. You will have to enable the "view hidden files" and disable "hide system files" options in your explorer folder options. _______________________________________________________________________

I would hope that they have a hell of a lot more than one person in QA. Sadly i think this area is completely under staffed, with too much reliance on the community to test it for free. It would be interesting to know how many employees are in QA. This is a clusterf--k of epic proportions, this is just not acceptable, and hardly the first large issue on the first day of a "patch" release.

For those that need to restore boot.ini on Windows XP x64, here's the procedure:
Start->Run->sysdm.cpl Click on Advanced then startup and recovery settings. Click on the edit button to open boot.ini in a notepad. Accept to create it if you're being asked to.
Paste the following: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional x64 Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
Save. Then you should be good to go.
If you already rebooted your computer and got stuck, then you'll need to follow above procedures, start a recovery console and perform a BOOTCFG /Rebuild. See also http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000648.htm
Hope this helps.

Thanks to the people on the in-game channel who alerted me to this. I hadn't rebooted, and it appears my boot.ini file was missing from C: (ie. it wasn't there, and when I created a new one it didn't compain).
*** CCP - I used the FULL Premium Client download/installation. I noticed that the issue is only reported to be with the upgrade to premium? Someone might like to verify this ***
NOTE: I had downloaded the in game graphics update for Singularity testing (but never got on), and had rebooted since them. Does appear that the full installer may have deleted my boot.ini
Semi-Major system killing bugs aside.. Nice job on the Trinity engine CCP. And also on the awesome trailer (love the music).

Edited by: Fall Girl on 06/12/2007 10:19:14 Edited by: Fall Girl on 06/12/2007 10:18:32 There are probably hundereds of people that cant get in to there computer at all right now. Those people may not have computer #2.
A lot of people have computers like HP and stuff where the OS is on partition 2 in which case, when the computer restarts, it will not load windows.
This is easy to fix if you have an XP CD with proper recovery console, but the HP recovery console is gimped out mostly and doesnt have tools like bootcfg.exe.
What a huge mess this is going to be for CCP and they know it.
I feel sorry for the users that are bringing their computers to the shop as we speak because they have no other option.
