Each time there is a update, there have always been som errors occuring. I can understand that people are eager to check out the new stuff and start playing as soon as possible.... Im not among those.
Based on experience it always take a few days before a patch can settle in correctly, while CCP sort out the latest bugs, they havent "discovered" during inital testing (nothing new there as well).
In short Im still going to wait a few more days, before I either a) update the game or b) install the client again.
As of now, the forum is drowning with complains and advices, which makes it hard to sort out whats being done or not (unless your a forum dweller, who loves to plow through 6573 or something posts about the issues this patch have created)
I only hope that CCP in the end can make a "locked" post about all the issues and how you should solve them, and not spread the replies ALL over the place. |

Previous patches have made the game vastly buggy in all sorts of ways but I think this kind of damage to your OS is a new one.

This is the stupidest thing I've read all day.
It's not the driver's fault for being in a wreck. It's the car manufacturer's for letting us drive the car anywhere we want.
Shockingly stupid doesn't begin to qualify the above quote.

Edited by: Kharadran Sullath on 06/12/2007 22:52:59 Well... I am against many of the whiners but saying that you shouldn't download a patch once it is released because it may include bugs... it just shouldn't be that way. The bug itself is CCP's fault. The subsequent actions of panicked players however, is not. At least far from the same degree. ------

On the same note, why don't you learn to avoid the forums for the first few days after a patch since you know it's going to be filled with repeated mentions of the same bugs?

"Why can't people learn?"
Because if everyone waited a few days for bugs to be ironed out, there would be no-one online playing to identify the bugs...?
The why can't people learn track in the scenario you describe is fundementally flawed. However I would hope that vast number of eve's subscriber base have learned (and not the hard way) that backups are your friend. -- Noble Scumbag

I'd like the OP to explain what kind of company releases a product that people should EXPECT to be broken when it is first released.
Please, enlighten me.

The company that makes the systems I work on too. Combination of software and hardware that added up equates to 2 years of learning how screwed up it is.

You do realize that many companies release software that are free of critical bugs, correct?
Imagine what console software companies would still be in business if they released finalized software on hardcopy that crashed systems. The convenience of updating has made companies like CCP lazy. This is not the first time CCP has released an update that ruined an OS.
That people have to learn to expect CCP not to do a proper job tells me enough.

Console games still ship with many bugs. They tend to be rarer than in PC software as people are less tolerant, and systems are standardised. Many console games are still patched via e.g. X-Box Live.
The problem is really the complexity and open-endedness of PCs, which is also the reason they are so popular. This problemn in particular is a pretty major error on CCP's part too, though.

Actually, the quote is not wrong!!
Microsoft's OS is shockingly badly designed. Most proper OS would have a file like that locked down so only sysadmins could touch it, and a problem like this wouldn't have occured.
To use your car analogy, if a car manufacturer had made their car so pressing a small, anonymous button looking just like 1000's of other buttons made the car explode, the car manufacturer WOULD be responsible.
CCP should of.c. have tested their patch a lot better, but under a properly behaved OS, an application would not be ABLE to cause problems like this.

I didn't say they didn't ship with bugs. Read again. I said, 'free of critical bugs'. For ages console software companies didn't have the chance to 'patch', and at the time the software and programming was complex for the time. They somehow managed though. Didn't they? Apologetics doesn't fly with me.

Understatement of the year.
I still love watching all the CCP fanbois (and the MS haters) try to blame MS for this ABSOLUTELY STUPID MISTAKE on CCP's part.
So yes, anyone blaming MS for CCP's mistake still qualifies as the stupidest thing I've read all day.

Actually, I'd say your biased views are a strong contender for that title! Black/white usually aren't.
CCP should have tested better! Microsoft should have made a proper OS!
You focusing on one company's mistake and completely ignoring the other company isn't a fair evaluation. I wonder who you work for
Your comparison with consoles is also faulty. If they had had files like boot.ini which could have been overwritten, they probably would have been by now. However, they are PROPERLY designed, and applications can't access critical parts of the system. In fact, by using that example, you HIGHLIGHT why MS's OS is partly to blame!

Theres some incredibly ******* dumb fanbois in this thread.
EVERY O/S can be modified in Admin mode, and almost all O/Ss require admin mode to install stuff (generally considered a 'good thing'!)
Fun fact: On *ALL FLAVORS* of machintosh you can whack system files Fun fact: On *ALL FLAVORS* of windows you can whack system files Fun fact: On *ALL FLAVORS* of linux you can whack system files Fun fact: On *ALL FLAVORS* of Sun Solaris you can whack system files Fun fact: On *ALL FLAVORS* of HP/UX you can whack system files Fun fact: On *ALL FLAVORS* of Net BSD *AND* Free BSD you can whack system files (and so on)
Your a ******* ****** if you think that CCP can dodge blame on this for tripping over a feature of all known operating systems when in admin mode (Usually requrired to install stuff) and not testing.

The matter of the fact is, that a PROPER OS wouldn't have allowed ANY application to let a simple mistake like this screw up the system. Linux wouldn't! MacOS wouldn't!
Vista is not safe against bugs like this either even if you try to say so. It just happened not to be affected by this one because it didn't have that particular file. Unfortunately, Vista has essentially the same design fault as XP, since applications install either with super-user credentials, or can elevate themselves to that level.
Microsoft is just as much to blame as CCP, since they are the ones who've released a platform which is not immune to these kinds of user errors.
Your Microsoft fanboi'ism is funny, and my guess is a lot of people are amused at your selective blame-casting. I know I am
