I am new to Eve-Online but not to MMORPGs as I used to play COH about 18 months ago but gave it up as it got boring.I recently stumbled across Eve and have enjoyed what little time I have been able to play.
I am not interested in playing an MMORPG against the computer I have an Xbox for that but what I do like is the PvP side of these games but it appears to me that the PvP arenas are all about how many people you can get to sit and wait for people to jump through a gate.
What are the chances that someone can give me some advice about what to do to
Raise funds to buy stuff
Train skills to kill stuff
What should I train first
Avoid these giant groups of players.
I am not sure if its a mistake but I have chosen to be Minmatar (The Red Background Ships I think) and haven't been able to get on in the month I have been playing to truely skill my character.
Also how can you join a larger group of players.

anyway my advice is you buy a buncha frigates and go try and kill some stuff.

Embrace piracy. Read about the Rifter , try to master its use in lowsec belts. My corp can help you learn piracy , convo me if you're interested.

For what its worth there are dozens of ways of PvP besides gate camping, like mission griefing, smack-talking, threatening BOB, wardeccing, HiSec solo ganking (what my son is doing). You won't learn in a day, and you won't learn what you like in a month. First thing -- get your learning skills done and lose lots of frigates shooting rats while you get the mechanics under your belt.

Hey Drat, I used to play Coh/Cov for over 2 yrs until i left for the same reason, just got boring. Ive tried other games like WoW and galaxies and trust me, EVE is where you wanna be.
Your race doesnt matter, it doesnt reflect in any real significant way on your eve career.
Dont trust Anyone. unless you've got into a corp where your making buddies and are with people you trust, dont trust anyone cuz everyones out to get you  This game is bursting with scammers, liars, thieves, pirates, mercs, crafty traders and everything in between, and these actions are encouraged. Its not unfair, its just Eve.
Bigger isnt better. Dont rush into a battleship and think your gonna pwn everyone below you ship class wise cuz it couldnt be further from the truth.
As far as skills, I would put some time into your learning skills (getting the lvl1 skills up to 4 and the lvl2 skills up to at least 3) as soon as you can. Get yourself into a cruiser class ship just so u have one if u need it. And train on basic support skills to lvl 5 like electronics and engineering.
Find a corp. Make friends. Loners dont last long.
and check out all the newbie stickies and such.
And if all else fails, an you get so frustrated you wanna quit Eve.. then gimme your stuff.
