I've been seeing some unfamiliar terms concerning tanks lately. I am familiar with tanking, but what is a buffer tank, and an omni tank?
Thanks, Friday

Buffer tank I haven't heard before; perhaps it's synonymous with a passive armor tank where you have a lot of armor plates and no repairers.
An omni tank is a tank that has high resists to all the damage types. Typically such a tank will use a pair of energized adaptive nano membranes and a damage control. Recent changes to the fitting requirements for these modules have made it harder for some ships to fit such a tank.

Edited by: Shanur on 13/12/2007 15:18:29 Buffer tank: AKA Spider tank - A tank where the damage taker uses primarily resistance modules to absorb the damage while friends in his fleet restore the damage trough remote repair or shield projector modules. Because these modules are more efficient than self contained armor repair and shield booster modules this is a highly preffered approach for fleets where possible. EDIT: This is also the only tanking strategy that allows you to involve logistics drones because these drones can only be used to aid ships other than yourself.
Omni tank: A resistance module that adds resistance to all damage types. Examples: Invulnerability field, Energized Adaptive Nano Membrame (EANM). The only resistance module type that helps mitigate damage inflicted by gate turrets or CONCORD ships.

Fitting a full buffer tank can leave you with around 50,000 armor hit points plus resistances Spider tanked or not, thats a lot of armor for a small gang to get through Also it allows you to fit the biggest class of guns to your ship.

Ok. it can maybe also revolve around a tank that is set up entirely around maximizing hit points at the expense of boosters, reppers and resistances. So all plates or all extenders. |

Buffer tank: This is essentially making your ship have as many hitpoints as possible, while still having respectable resistances. The point here is to make it so that it takes ages and ages to get through your armour. This is usually used with either a gank fitting (most common on Abaddons and Megathrons I think) or a "spider tank" which is where everyone fits remote repairers rather than having their own repairers. Done right spider tanks are pretty awesome.
Omni tanks are when you get modules like the Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane and use a load of them with high skills to raise all your resistances at once. Often you would see them set-up up two at a time with a Damage Control, or just as an extra module on an otherwise active tank. You would see this term most often when people refer to problems with Amarr ships, or specifically lasers, as the base resistances on armour favours EM, which when using omni tanking gets raised very high compared to the other damage types. Omni tanking is also very easy and uses comparatively few slots compared to a proper active tank. This angers laser users somewhat...
Anyway, I think that's it.
