Linux.
Sorry, I'm not really making a contribution, it's too late for OS talk. I just wanted to be the first to say it ------

If you want a computer for gaming, which most people here will there is nothing a MAC can offer you that a PC can't offer you except the inability to upgrade when you need better hardware.

You actually can install WinXp / Vista natively on an Apple computer and dual boot into it to play games (using the Mac's "Boot Camp", which makes this process very simple), but you will always be lagging behind hardward-wise: for some reason the graphic cards shipped by Apple are always a generation or two behind PC ones, and the upgradeability of the rest of the system is very limited.
On the other hand, I've been using a Mac for a year now as my main work (software development) / general use computer (while still using a PC for gaming), and it just blows Windows away (and on quite a few aspects Linux too).
Before that I used Linux as a main desktop OS for many years, but these days I'm finding myself using it solely for server tasks and so on (for which I still prefer Linux hands down) - you do give up a lot of tweakability and customizability, but open up your terminal in Mac and you've got good 'ole Unix lurking there beneath all the visual desktop candy.
Some things I missed from Linux desktops (such as multiple virtual desktops) are now in Leopard, and in any case pretty much all Linux software can be installed under Mac as well (as again, it's just Unix inside).
I'm curious about the upcoming KDE 4, and I'll definitely be trying that out, but for now Mac is on my laptop / desktop, Linux on my servers, and Windows on my gaming machine.

I haven't had a single problem with Vista, it's been far more stable than XP ever was for me and everything looks so pretty
So when the next big patch has some totally irreversible horrible XP based side effect I want you to know I will be laughing at you with absolutely no pity
But I will buy you a wig

How much more have you spent to "upgrade" your system to Vista? Honestly now. Nothing short of a researcher / mathematican doing round the clock Mathematica and Matlab computations warrants the use of 2 - 4 Gigs of ram.

OS/X is too dumbed down for my tastes, all these flashy graphics and animations when you drag your cursor along the quicklaunch bar thing, but you still can't manually add printers, and networking is a nightmare I will not even soil myself with by discussing it.
All and all, Mac computers will never be as popular as Personal Computers, regardless of how many emo kids they get to make their commericals, citing how "great" it is be part of i-life.

Unless you're some sort of graphics designer you should stick with XP then upgrade to Vista later after the service pack. Mac OS has nothing to really offer. It doesn't "blow away" anything. Its not "super faster" nor "more comfortable". Less comfortable if you're not used to virtual desktops or customizing your setting alot.
Honestly, if you use a computer for your work then you'll be very opinionated on preferences. If you're a regular guy who like to surf, game, and use an occasional app then try them both and you'll see the overrated-ness. Suggest you borrow someone's mac and try them out both to see what you think before you buy anything. Maybe you'll like mac OS, maybe you wont.
But if you are really into tweaking you ought to be using Linux anyway.

You can add a printer manually. Networking is easier than any other OS I've used (*nix or Windows) the 50+ macs I maintain talk with each other and to Mac, Windows and Linux servers with ease. Admittedly to tweek you have to dig around to get under the Aqua interface but its quite easy once you get the hang of it-its still a bastard version of BSD under there.

Got to agree with you there. I hate the Mac-obsessive-hip-smug-so-called-creative-wet-bastard image Mac advertise with. I hate the DRM riddled ipod/itunes **** combo. I'm not keen on the overpriced desktop hardware either (their servers are excellent thought). Having said all that OS X 10.4+ is the best OS out there by a long way.
Edit; to the OP, if you have the cash and don't need a beast of a machine for gaming, give it a go. You can always dual boot to XP or Vista. OS X is a nice enviroment to work in day to day (oh and for the love of the gods say away from Mac:Office 2004, its the buggiest POS ever).

Well I only just got Vista, preinstalled on a new laptop, and have to say that I don't see it as such a great upgrade from XP.
The only thing I really like about it is Media Center.
Saying this though I have no trouble with it and even though I would have got XP on this lappy if I could have, I'm now not worried about having Vista now I am used to it. __________________________________

It's so simple.
Mac OSX: 100% usability Windows XP: 80% usability Windows Vista: Never used it, but due to those crappy overloaded transparency & window switching FX I'd guess 50% usability
Linux, any distribution: 0% usability When a Linux distribution says "localized", 50% of the stuff is localized, the rest isn't. Half of the programs are designed by coders and full of Windows Vista style icons (bad copies), the other half hasn't any icons to support the user at all.
Lets take text editors in KDE, for example. By default, I can choose between "KWrite" and "Kate". Why do they have to use dumb names beginning with k? I want to use software with melodic names, not "KWrite". I mean, the Editor in Windows isn't named EWrite (E for Explorer.exe) either, is it? And try comparing the websites for Kate and TextMate...
Oh, and see how well arranged menu entries are in Linux... Linkage
Oh, did I already mention that in Linux, nothing fits together?

So in other words, you're saying KDE is 0% usability, and deriving that as a result Linux has 0% usability, even though almost no major distributions use KDE by default?
Failure.

It's understandable if you don't like/can't use Linux, to use it properly requires a certain level of intelligence and if your grammar is any indication then we've found the source of the problem. Stating that an OS sucks because you don't like the names of free software or the fact that menus are different to what you're used to is kinda dumb.

Am I a "bad" computer person? I use XP, and I don't see much point in trying any form of linux? Since I don't seem to have a spyware riddled spam-spewing machine, and any windows specific issues I've run into I've been able to solve in less time than it takes to DL/order and run any distro out there.
