Used a destroyer (Coercer) for salvaging/looting my missions pre-Trinity like most people; 8 high slots for 4x Salvager 1s & 4x Tractor Beams, fitted with a 10mn & some Istabs and it was extremely nimble & efficient.
Now? It's near useless because of it's cargo space & the #$%#$%$@# change to loot mass.
What are people using now?

I also used to use a Coercer with the same fit as yours but now I fly a Cormorrant with the same highs and mids and a Cargo Expander II for the low.
Now before ppl go off and say "that's still got bugger all cargo capacity" lemme explain
As I run the salvage and my cargo fills up I drop a can and carry on until I've cleaned up. Once that is done and (this is where the important bit comes in) before I leave the mission room/s I BM the can/s,then I'll nip off and have a chat with the agent to complete the mission.
Now that all that is completed I grab my hauler and warp to the BM's I previously made and voila!........all my loot/salvage in tidy little packages and no screwing around going back through acceleration gates and respawns (Worlds Collide anyone?)

I prefer a Hurricane...
4x Salvagers, 4x Tractor Beams 10MN MWD, cap rechargers, 5 expanders IIs, 1 nano IIs
2 large standard containers in the hold.
This has 1600m3 of cargo capacity +260m3 from the containers.
This used to have enough sapce for all missions but now only has enough for the small to mid-sized ones. I prefer the speed ( 900ish ) and agility of the Hurricane over a Thrasher ( 1500ms ).
I have used a thrasher since Trinity and basically It means you have to salvage and loot into a can and the come back in a hauler... however you have to do that half the time with a hurricane now.

Problem with the Cane is max 6 targets locked, which I find limiting. You could put a T2 Sig Amp or two on it of course, and still have enough cargo for most missions, but not the biggest ones. Need Electronics upgrades 5 for that, which I don't have. The alt does though.
I put 3x Salvage Tackles on my Catalyst, but I suspect two of those and a cargo rig would have been better. With the tackles, 3x salvager, 5x tractor is definitely more efficient then 4/4.
In max cargo trim, Catalyst is still twice as nimble as well as faster then a 'Cane (~800m/s vs 600m/s for me) and has enough cargo to get at least the essentials, if not everything from most missions.

Best salvage ship in game: Kronos/Paladin: 6x CE II, 1x Nano II 1x MWD II, 3x Cap recharger II 3x Tractor Beam I, 4x Salvager I 2x Tackle Rigs
A bit expensive and skill intensive, but the best ships for the role.
If you want you could try and run the missions in them too instead of using a commandship.

Raven with 3 cargo expanders gives me about 1320 cu m, with 2 each of tractor beams & salvagers, and enough firepower remaining. It's reasonably quick with an afterburner for deadspace to clean up the main loot/salvage from all L4 missions if you do a room, cleanup, do next room, etc. Also means I can roam easily, needing only 1 ship. _____________________________ Who, me? my opinion: the best was and still is the Armageddon (Amarr BS)
with 8 high and 8 low u can have: H: 5 tractor beam, 3 salvager M: MWD, cap recharge, cap booster (empty = can load looted charges / full for the MWD) L: 6 cargo expander = near 3000 m3, 2 optional (other cargo or agility mod)
3 rigs: 2 salvager, 1 cargo
Fly at 150m/s or MWD at 900m/s
isnt it the best ?

Only 4 highs, but if you want to spend some cash on salvage rigs it will not be so slow and it should still have enough cargo space to do most/all missions in one run. Especially if you have good skills and fit expanders.

Exequror, yes. Nice cargo cruiser. That's what I'm thinking of switching to, currently using an Eris but that insane & random loot size increase is making that painful.

I used to use a Hyperion with
4x tractors 4x salvagers
1x mwd bookmarking place then going back after the mission wes completed cap rechargers for the rest
T2 cargo expanders for the lows
From memory I used to get about 1800 storage hold, but since nerf I don't bother looting any more unless it's a drone mission.

hhhhmmm, that's an interesting one, mainly because it's a really cheap BS & I can already fly Amarr BS. Will definitely look into that one, I'm not in THAT much of a hurry to use any type of rigs on a pure Salvaging boat, but anything higher than 2000m3 will clean up house if I jettison/don't loot the huge boosters/metal scraps!
Thanks all for your ideas!

Edited by: Wet Ferret on 17/12/2007 13:41:26 Edited by: Wet Ferret on 17/12/2007 13:40:02 It was mentioned, but since Trinity you're looking at sporadic large chunks of loot that you may have to make multiple trips to haul. If you have to make more than one trip, you might as well just be loading it all into a can and hauling it. So instead of taking a chance with a big ship, that's what I've been doing. I find the speed of my Cormorant to be very helpful anyway, especially if there are wrecks very far apart and I need to fly 150kms away from them to drop a "warp-anchor" jetcan (the fast aligning to warp back and forth is a plus there too).
High - 4xSalvager 4xTractor Mid - 1MN MWD, Small Cap Battery II Low - Expanded Cargo II Rigs - Whatever you want but for me salvage rigs all the way.

Really, if you throw cargo expanders in the los, a mwd and cap mods in the mids, and salvagers and tractors in the his, any battleship will do for most missions.
I just throw on as many cargo expanders as I need onto my trusty mission domi, fill the rest of the los with nanos, throw a mwd and cap rechargers into the mids, and fit 2 tractors and 4 salvagers in the his. Works like a charm... carries over 3000 m3 with all expanders in the los, carries over 2100 m3 and flies over 1000 m/s with 2 nanos.
I know there's better ships for the job but I really don't want to spend money on a salvaging ship when my domi does just dandy.

Currently, using a coercer with 4 X Salvager's, 4 X Tractors, cargo II's I get almost 800M3. I still use it for solo lev 2 mission running obviously for lev 3 or 4 I will need something bigger, thanks OP for posing the question.
I have used a the exequror before but I find that it is just not fast enough in cleaning up loot..true it holds more but if it take me longer to get it all...worst case I drop a can with loot and come back.

currently i use a Brutix (4 Expander IIs) for cleaning up level 4s, and while i have to make a second trip sometimes, its usually not to bad in terms of volume. Certainly not to the extent i've heard people complain about.
