The patch that is currently being deployed will address the stability of the Linux client. I would like to gather your post-patch Linux experience in this thread. I would like to know if you crash more often now, if you are crashing less often or if you are no longer crashing at all. In short, did this patch improve the stability of your client?

by now, it seems to be abit better. "feels" better. but the bug with beeing unable to type, still exists. i did not file that bug before, was always to lazy to start with debugging enabled. (my own fault i know).
here is what it looks like: http://overlord.fh-salzburg.ac.at/~achmed/linux1.png

There seems to be a problem with the Market screen.
It does not display any data. The charts work but no data.
It worked when i started playing after the patch. And then it quit about 10 minutes ago.
anyone else see this?

I was running just fine last night under Ubuntu 7.10. After today's patch I get the splash screen followed by a black screen and that's it.
Looking thru posts has not yielded any solutions (OSS sound doesn't work on my system, but that wasn't a problem yesterday).

I've resubscribed today because of this new expansion, and downloaded the "Linux client". I'm getting random crashes, I was able to enter the game and at least put some skill to train, but after that the game crashed.
I don't think it's my ATI, because I have the new 7.10 drivers with improved OPENGL support, but I've read in this forums that you are having issues with Athlon XP, and so I guess it's my Athlon 2500+ (barton core) the one causing me trouble. Wish you could correct this.

seems ok so far - ubuntu 7.10 nvidia (installed through envy)
getting some white stargates some icons not loading for blueprints strange backgrounds on some ship / blueprint icons
heavy traffic systems are lagging very badly - but not sure how the windows client is doing with those, system will freeze for ten seconds then ok for 30-40 seconds then freezing again - this is in the forge / citadel. Another account in a less busy system worked no problems.

maybe, ccp should make a sticky on how to enable debug. just saying "i hink my cpu is the problem" doesnt help transgaming alot.
lets work together and help transgaming with our debug logs to improve the client!

It seems a bit more stable. I've had two lockups when first entering the game as a char, but I've not jumped anywhere either and probably won't until the POS hangar runs out of ammo. Warping around in the same system appears to be ok. This implies that the crash error when jumping hasn't been resolved yet. This is after around 4 hours of playing in 0.0 ratting and mining. --- I use Gentoo/Linux and Gentoo uses software I write |

Edited by: Ereman Sarat on 19/12/2007 10:14:35 Fixed... No more crash to desktop. Totally stable. For two hours play I should have expected, mebbe 4-5 instances of this. Got none. THANKYOU!!! :D
Fixed?... no more graphical anomalies warping (intermittant problem before, restarting would fix)
Reduced... fewer graphical anomalies in mission areas... (intermittant before, did see one instance of this)
Unknown... Forgot to turn on my shield hardeners to check... after time those would also generate anomalies in the shield graphic around the ship.
Fixed? so far... intermittant distortion/*****ling of sound. (intermittant before, restarting would fix this) Did not experience this yet.
Total playtime, roughly three hours.

Relevant hardware... nvidia 8800gts/320, 100.14.19 driverset.

Oh yeah. Fixed. Not having to clear the cache constantly now, and not getting stuck trying to login (after character selection the login progress bar would often get stuck around 90%... clearing the cache would temporarily fix this)
Gotta say, a lot of the issues for me have been hammered out. Just some cosmetic stuff with some of the graphics (mentioned earlier), and then bring on the premium content :D

This patch does seem to be a lot more stable - certainly the crash at every stargate has gone, so have the 5 second lockups every time I approached a gate or changed systems.
This does however seem to have been replaced with periodic lockups (EvE just freezes and doesn't come back within 5 minutes or so) when docking or undocking. Seems to be a bit random with no recognizable correlation to what I am doing.
All in all, a step in the right direction
System - P4, 2 GB Ram, nVidia GeForce 7600GT 256MB Ram, Intel p695 Motherboard (not using the PATA connector - pure SATA), SuSE 10.3 x86
When the lockups happen - as ever the network is stable and showing < 200ms latency to the eve servers (normally 50-120, peaking at around 180).

One problem I'm still having is that it frequently freezes after the character selection window, when the 'character selection' loading bar is up. Typically freezes around 84 or 96 percent. This can happen repeatedly (more than ten times in a row).
I recently noticed that waiting a while before selecting a character helps this, but I haven't yet tested this extensively.
There are still items with a large white-on-black ! instead of their correct picture; examples include the acolyte and hobgoblin 1 drones, and most of the new ships from Trinity.
The occasional crash when generating character portraits seems to have been fixed; at least, I was able to generate 50 in a row without crashing.

I haven't crashed once since the patch which is very good news, but sadly most of the other bugs are still there.
Graphical anomalies in missions as below:
Graphical anomalies in the fitting screen (still). This seems to be time related and is fixed with a restart, but it is damn annoying.
The issue with regards targeted items being left justified has a "fix" available now as you mentioned in my other thread (although it doesn't just happen when "Selected Items" is minimised, but also when it is tabbed)
The Items/Cargohold/Vaults/Containers bug which doesn't show items until you click on the the scroll bar or displays items in one huge vertical stack still exists but also exists in windows, so it is not Linux specific.
Certain items (as mentioned above) are not generating images but instead have the large "!"
Mouse movement effecting FPS seems to have gone, but this could be related to me reinstalling my Ubuntu system and may not have been related to the game at all since so few people have had the same problem.
It's late and I can't think of any more at the moment, but if I do I will edit accordingly.

Sure thing:
Sys config:
Athlon 64 3200, nVidia 5950 Ultra, gig of RAM. Ubuntu 7.10. nVidia closed source driver.
Not playableness:
1. Framerates are 40% of what I get on the same machine when running Windows. (That's like 20 fps. It's even worse with a lot of ships on the screen.) Alternatively under Windows the client runs smoothly at roughly 60fps (average).
I guess the point is that in order for a Linux client to be usable it's got to at least *approach* the performance of the native windows client.
It seems counter productive to me to actually use the Linux client when I can use a dual boot into Windows and get far better performance.
Begin Fine Whine:
Why do the Linux client if you are only going to do it half way? It just doesn't make sense.
Under Windows an ATI X350 runs EVE in a pretty nice fashion on 512MB RAM and a Pentium 4. Load Ubuntu and the Official Linux client and the machine is useless.
I am exceptionally supportive of CCP getting all "Captain Kirk" and rolling out what essentially is an X based *nix client even though Cedega and Cider are resource hogs of the 1st degree.
But performance has to be better to make the client usable. Also to be noted is that Transgaming hasn't given me a good experience as a customer and I'm not optimistic.
In closing let me say I'm sorry for the whine. It's just as a hardcore Linux user this isn't working. This should be tagged as "experimental", and not an official client, until Transgaming can optimize that wrapper enough that the experience is decent. (Or even better contract someone to port the game into OGL)
Don't even get me started on what the EVE official client and the commercial version of Cedega do to each other....
Just my opinion. |

Another example of graphical anomalies:
Granted, purple is my favourite colour BUT it's not right is it now? And this is on the Cedega client, not running Wine with Premium Content.

Edited by: Esme Nomarra on 21/12/2007 12:26:16 The 101 patch (including the upgrade to the client wrapper?) has improved things considerably. I've two CTD's in a day or twos play, rather than about ten times that number pre patch 101. One CTD was when approaching a stargate, other was leaving a station - same trigegrs to the CTD's, just a lot less of them.
Still getting the Black Screen Of Death on startup occasionally. Had this once after a CTD, but once when I'd previously exited the game normally. Ctrl-Alt-Del to enable me to log out of my Linux session still clears away the BSOD (revealing the sadly unreachable EVE login screen), and uninstalling EVE with Kpackage then reinstalling it (as only about 5 MB is affected, that must, I presume be just teh linux wrapper that Kpackage affects) still works to make the BSOD on startup go away temporarily.
Overall, feels much more stable. Still getting graphics visibly loading when entering stations (most of screen beige and/or white for a moment, then bits of the UI visibly render until everything is back to normal) quite a bit. Which means that, effectively, the user experience still isn't quite up to the standard of things pre-Trinity, but MUCH closer than it was pre 101 patch. FPS is still way poorer than I'd expect, especially as I'm running EVE on a PC with twice the RAM and 50% more CPU grunt than I was when I used Cedega to run the Windows version pre-Trinity. Despite teh change in PCs, framerates havent improved.
Many thanks for the good work on this patch!
Ubuntu 7.10 KDE twin Intel 3Ghz CPUs, 1GB RAM 'Linux client' version of EVE
PS. I'd still prefer to see a proper Linux client. Or an OS-neutral client so that EVERYONE needs to have a wrapper for their particular OS
PPS oh aye - I agree with Postlatta above - don't get me started on the linux client not playing nicely with a Cedega setup either. That's one of the worst and most idiotic*****-ups I've ever encountered.

Ok.
101 patch in Cegeda.
Still a crash happy swine, can't seem to nail a definite reason for it.
Graphics corruption on fitting screen, this is not time related, jumped in to game hitting fitting screen... bam. Once it starts doing it it'll always be like that.
General texture corruption, seems to be random and as shown before kinda goes "gingham".
`fraid I've rm -r'd .cegeda and moved back to wine; it still goes bang but not as often.

Seems I found out a repeatable way to crash the client, doing a "show info" on a character. Now it doesn't do it every time you do a show info but it ALWAYS happens when doing a show info. I also noticed that in the Mac thread that someone else has posted the logs on this and made the same discovery.

Crashes aren't as frequent, but have had multiple crashes post patch, just not as many or as bunched together.
I haven't had any "show info" crashes. Most of mine have been of the "wtf...why now?" types. Warping tween gates, docked and idle, etc., etc., but nothing to put finger on. I've added to my bug report with three debug logs, and the last line is always an exception error with a memory address listed.

After a conversation with Sev yesterday, and my subsequent installation of Envy, to easily upgrade my video drivers (to the 169.07 version), my setup seems totally stable so far. There's some minor graphics glitching showing up occasionally while warping, but so far, no crashes at all. I'll torture it when I can to see if I can MAKE it crash, frequent alt-tabbing, etc. But so far, even the little things are gone. Barring the come and go graphical errors (which so far are only showing up in warp, these days.

Edited by: ATOM ANT on 30/12/2007 13:56:03 Edited by: ATOM ANT on 30/12/2007 13:53:16 At last, after a day and a half of wrestling with a new computer and installing linux...... the game is alive.
System is as follows.
- CPU - AMD Athlon64 X2 6000+ (3Ghz) 1mb cache. - Motherboard - AMD Asus M2N-E SLI - Memory DDR II 800MHz Kingston Dual Channel Kit 2x1Gb ( 4GHz total) - Video card - Nvidia: eVGA GeForce 8800GTS 512Mb. - OS = Open SuSe 10.2
Now surely thats enough horse power to run EVE on linux.
Instalation didn't guite go as per instructions from ccp but the instructions did serve as a good guide.
Initial start up of EVE went very well. Awwwwsome.:-)
Subsequent start ups have revealed the black screen of death and it seems the only way out is to shut down the computer.
THe BSOD is infrequent (fortunately), and is an anoyance. I can still hit the escape key and the configuration screen comes up in white and the end game and close screen buttons function but they don't do anything. I don't recall being able to change menus.
I can't change the screen size and there is only full screen option, no windowed mode which is important to me since i like to run more than one client. I understand that I might be able to deal with this via the eve -config command. I hope so. I haven"t tried it yet.
I changed the resolution down to a 12xx X 600 value and lost the text and pics in the local channel. Changing the resolution back to 1400X900 which is my monitor size, solved the problem.
With every posible function turned on, my fps is holding around 30fps. This is at least twice or more what my old computer was able to accomplish, with every posible function including sound, turned off. So to me the game response is great but I notice that people are getting 60fps so I wonder if I'm doing something wrong outside of having everthing turned on.
Transgaming doesn't exactly tickle my fancy either but I look at it this way, There was no linux client at ccp before, so something is better than nothing and I think we'll just have to live with it untill things get better.

There is a possible solution to this. If this happens ctrl+alt+right arrow to another desktop. open system resources aplication and go to the procseses tab. See if "wine", "wineserver", "eve.exe" or "iexplorer.exe" are running. If they are kill em by right clicking and "kill processes" and then okay. Try the client again. It oughta work. Problem is sloppy exit code on abnormal termination leaving zombied or stray processes running.

I'm sorry for what I am about to say. EVE is an exceptional game and is both fun and addictive as hell.
But having just reactivated two of my accounts to gear up to play with the 'linux' client I am sadly very disappointed. But really just that you lied to me about it being a linux client. you just made me install cedega to play the windows client. in fact I compared the ./cedega/EVE Online/c_drive/Program Files/CCP/EVE contents with that of the contents of my windows install and of the install of EVE from the windows client in my drive_c for wine. they're all the same, you just wrapped yours in cedega.
all the bugs are the same as well, I can't change video settings in game. and when I change the resolution to windowed at ANY resolution (but obviously not widescreen resolutions as those aren't in the list in the config tool) it just resizes the virtual desktop, the game itself still runs at 1680x1024 fullscreen.
I can't move my mouse out of the bounds of the window. I believe this is a directx compatibility issue as winecfg offers a toggle for this and the cedega config doesn't seem to. I also can't alt-tab out for some reason.
And the graphics thus far are a far cry from the screenshots of the new expansion. maybe that is because I am playing a windows client in linux...
Anyways, I apologize for *****ing but this seemed the thread to do it in. Thank you for the excellent game, though! and the resubscription bonus. I am still excited to play EVE again, I will just be doing it in wine the old fashioned way.

Just like when I had WINE installed, I once again had to copy arial.ttf to the home/<user>/.cedega/.transgaming_global/fonts directory.
Just an annoyance, but a first time user might have issues, especially considering we are dealing with hidden folders.
Or is the arial.ttf issue sort of a poll tax? "If you can't figure it out, go back to Windows you n00b". If we WANT widespread Linux acceptance, niggling little things like this should not be happening.
That "switch to OSS" if you have the black screen after the splash screen is nonsense. Just have the font install in the correct directory as part of the package and it won't be a problem.
Of course, if a person manages to install Ubuntu, get sound working properly, get vid drivers working properly, maybe that is enough of a "poll tax" on the user.
Oh, running on Ubuntu 7.10 64bit, BTW.
Looks OK so far.

I'm experiencing every problem mentioned by everyone here, but I haven't really noticed the graphic anomalies on my notebook where they are frequent on my desktop with dual monitors (nvidia twinview setup). I am actually only getting an average of about 6 FPS on my laptop where it was running smoothly before the patch, so I barely even use it for more than some quick in-station stuff and that could be the main reason I'm not noticing the graphics problems too.
I have 2 things to add. First, and I think this was actually mentioned but to a lesser degree, if I run the game windowed it never exits properly. Wine and/or wineserver must be explicitly killed every single time I exit the game, but only when it's running windowed. I've never had that happen when running full screen. It seems like a problem with cedega for that reason. Second, I try to submit bug reports and it will not let me upload any logs even if they are small files. I guess this is a website issue, but I figured I'd mention it here anyway since it makes it impossible to send you the debugging information I collect that you need.
Also a couple things I haven't seen mentioned here. I use autolink in chat quite a bit, and every once in awhile when I highlight something and right click it instantly crashes. I've also had only a couple crashes when trying to close the starmap. A corp member who uses Windows reported this issue to me before I ever saw it happen myself, so I guess that one is definitely an Eve bug.
I also crash if I go through too many systems. I think I can visit about 20 systems on average before the game crashes. If I keep jumping between the same 4 or 5 systems and avoid pulling up info, autolinking, or changing ships it almost never crashes.
It is slightly less unstable than the original Trinity release but still far more unstable than the pre-trinity version.
And finally I will give a couple examples of how to make the client crash in under a minute: Go to a ship maintenance array, open it, and board a ship while you're in another ship. If that doesn't crash it, do it again. If you can do it 3 times you've beaten my record on that.
Like everyone else said, show info on a player, but not just any player. Make sure it's a player that has the black box and white exclamation point for their portrait thumbnail. Try bringing up info on every player in local, for instance. I think my record is closer to 6 before a crash on that. If I left click and wait for the thumbnail to come up first every time, I think I can get up to 15 or 20, though.
Both my desktop and notebook are AMD dual cores with nVidia graphics. The notebook has 2GB RAM and the desktop has 1GB RAM. I run Gentoo on both systems with 2.6.23 kernel and latest nvidia drivers.

I am also getting random crashes. Sometimes I can play for hours and sometimes less than 10 minutes. But the stability has improved.

Me too, but no luck getting the client to work...
Login screen flickers once, then black screen.
I get the static trinity image, but when login screen is to appear, it flashes on for 1 frame, then poof, all black. I noted an absence of any text in the many times I've started the client, tried the arial.ttf trick, but made no difference. There is no sound (but my sound is working in all other programs), using ALSA with OSS emulation support in kernel.
an interesting bit that shows up in the console window in which the eve command is executed:
"sh: lsb_release: command not found" |

AH! saved by This Thread: all is well now.
I noticed no problems of any kind at all... Except for still having no sound.
No funny graphics, no lockups or crashes, no memory leak (had cedega monitor running), no blocks where text should be, no nothing period. It even had a FASTER frame rate than I get in Winblows! I wonder how that is possible? I was getting 50-60fps, normally about 35-40 in winblows.
I tried doing most of the things described, which cause lockups. I couldn't make it mis-behave. Ran solid for several hours.
Sweet, no more rebooting to play.

This patch improved stability of the client. I still reliably crash about once every tenth Show Info on a pilot or agent, though. I think it has something to do with portrait rendering.

i'll keep this as simple and concise as possible given that i'm at work right now writing this instead of at home where all the information is directly infront of me.
I've recently decided to give ubuntu 7.10 a run, everything went fine with the install, got my graphic drivers updated via Envy which saved me some of the usual headaches. however after spending an entire day playing around with the eve *linux* client, i find myself banging my head off my desk repeatedly as i reach over to hit the power button on my case.
I run Ubuntu 7.10 64bit personal edition. My system spec's are AMD64 3000+ (2.0ghz // s754) w/ 2gb OCZ ram, BFG Geforce 7600gs (512), creative audigy 2 zs plat.
My Issue: I can get past the login screen now, however once in game, my system will do a hard-lock and i am forced to do a hard reset.. the system is completely unresponsive.
for the 30 - 60 seconds it works, it looks good and i have decent fps (comparable to my previous experiences with windoze).
i've tried playing around with all the different settings in the eve config, i've played around with all sorts of settings in the nvidia display manager, disabled my second monitor, and so much more. its because of all that playing around that i've made it this far.
i'm at a loss of what else to try, i've been searching forums, google, ect.. trying to find someone who's had similar issues to see what they did to fix it, what i have found was for different problems but i've tested them all the same just in-case.
i really want this to work and not have to go back to windows, but if i can't play eve then i'm *not* a happy camper.
i will submit a proper bug report on this when i get home and can add/check logs from the lockups, but if anyone has ideas of what else to try it'd be most appreciated. its also note-worthy that this is a fresh install of ubuntu, the only thing i've installed is xmms to listen to my music, and eve to *try* and play at least *ONE* of my accts (although i wish windowed mode worked properly, so i could play 1280x1024 in a 1280x1024 window, instead of 1680x1050 inside a 1280x1024 window.. wtf is up with that??) -------

I'm removing sticky on this and locking. New "Post patch issues"-thread will be up after 1.1 is deployed.
