Captain's Log, 0021, Angelica DesJardins:
After being war dec'd by Stane's Raiders, I left Pator and Matari space for home. I completed several low end missions, made mountains out of molehills and such. I then flew around looking for a star base to call home until the war was done, or until I found a better corporation to work with. I took a 7-jump trek towards a low quality R&D agent, but I was turned away. They hadn't advertised that I must be a Nuclear Physicist. I have been scouring the star map for a mining agent for days. There's one in Hek, but that is too close to Pator, there were a few in low-sec, but there's too much risk.
I have chosen one in Octanneve, a 0.7 security system far far away from Pator and the war. However the only way there is through null sec space. Space listed by concord as 0.0, where they not only won't protect you, like in low-sec, but they don't acknowledge anything that happens there. I have to make 3 jumps through null sec space. This is my story.
22-jumps to go, I pack some mining lasers and rail guns on my Navitas. I already have a civilian afterburner and a Small Armor Repair Unit I. I can already hear the 0.0 gate-campers who are bound to pop me laughing. "She had a civilian afterburner, man. Hahaha!"

Captain's Log, 0023, Angelica DesJardins:
The blasted system crashed. After looking into it I noticed I still had an ancient storage device linked to the system. Windows ME it is called. Such primitive technology. I am currently in Chesiette at the gate to Reblier. This will be my first jump I've ever taken into low-security space. I've turned the autopilot off and have setup my overview to show star gates. My friends have gone through low-sec space without incident many times, but I always hear stories about pirates killing you for ransom. With less than 300,000 isk in the account, I'm sure to be podded if I am ever locked down.
My friends told me to equip some warp core stabilizers, but I haven't had the chance to learn how to install or operate them. Maybe on the trek home if I make it there. After the low-sec jump, I have 6 jumps through null space. This will be my last entry until then.
---end---
Captain's Log, 0024, Angelica DesJardins:
I'm currently in 97X-CH. My capacitor ran out of energy between star gates. The system is empty. I only have 1 more null sec jump to do, then a single low-sec jump. I might just make it.
---end---
Captain's Log, 0025, Angelica DesJardins:
I have successfully made my way back into high security space. Null-security was... scarcely populated. I was under the impression that there would be countless gate-camps and expert pirates and such, but this was not the case for me. The autopilot has been reengaged while I write this. Upon entry to every system I would send out a message to all system pilots that I was 'just passing thought' and pleading with them that they 'please not kill me.'
One pilot replied with a laugh, and them commented that it would get 'hot' in 5 minutes. Needless to say I didn't stay to try and understand what she meant. Thanks regardless for my first interaction with a null-sec player, Nemonia. I do hope to return one day, once I'm more skilled in the mining and manufacturing arts. Perhaps if one of the null-security players has a chance to read this, he or she may give me some helpful advice.
I've finally reached my destination. Now to continue the path of an industrialist miner.
---end---

congrats on your first treck into null space it is surprising how empty it can be on times i traved 30 jumps though null for hell of it straight through some of the biggest power houses in the null sec world with ease the few people i met there were fairly freindly
(though i could sense in there tone they would gladly pod my shuttle if i found myself in the same area as them)
the main problem with null space are the huge allainces and there borders especially ones with there enemies (for example bob - goonswarm borders) and the choke points from high sec to low sec (which i find to be most dangerous) but soon as you get into the main space of the allainces and you make sure you dont stay to long and your careful you will be ok

I wish you well in your 0.0 adventures. It's ironic that 0.0 can often be much safer than low sec Empire space or even high sec in certain respects.
R&D agents do actually make their specialist fields public: you just need to know where to look! You also need to have trained the relevant skills yourself to start a research project with them. It takes some time to train these skills up, and it takes time and effort to be held in high enough regard to have access to the higher ranking officials. Once you get there, though, the rewards can be pretty worthwhile.

I too would like to pass on my congratulations on having survived nullsec without incident.
Anyone who's been in nullsec for a while will quite happily tell you that it's a temperamental area. One moment it will be - for want of a better word - 'dead.' The next it will be crawling with groups of pilots with obscenely low security ratings out to insert high-velocity weaponry into you just because they can.
So, my advice is simple: Always be prepared to run, and always make use of your map. Set it to 'ships destroyed in the past hour' and be wary of systems with big red blobs as a result.
Fly safe!

My experience of extremely low security space was that once you got beyond those systems which bordered fairly high security space, the systems deeper in were fairly uninhabited. But, then again, the situation can change in the blink of an eye as I found out to my cost on my journey back to my home system!!! That which does not kill us makes us stronger. I thought your name sounded familiar. It was the "please" that I recall as you passed through Y9G. If I remember correctly we may have thought of chasing for a bit but we had bigger fish to contend with at that particular moment in time, besides there's not much sport in destroying a frigate.

Nullsec is like a russian rullet. If you are in a shuttle, then good luck meeting anybody in nullsec, but once you hop into something that is expensive, it is gatecamp on every stargate

There's another term for that, NiLakum-haani. It's called 'Sod's Law' and I hear it was once a very popular phrase.

"Murphy's Law", is a more common name for it.

Your two worst enemies in the deep water.
1. Bubbles 2. Stations
Run into a stationed system, you're likely going to draw the attention of the locals.
And bubbles...spend ANY amount of time out here and you will learn a special hatred of those oversized disco balls. You see those, you had better hope your cap's good and the microwarp drive holds up. The big ones will leave you warp dead, and its a LONG 36 kilometers to the perimeter.
One of the primary pipes I use has a system where the locals put a big one in the ugliest possible spot 85 kilometers off the gate and leave it there, camped or not. Always fun, but it hurts like hell sitting down when I finally reach my destination...

It's actually been a long and eventful year since I last lost a ship in a combat action out in nullsec, and anyone who knows me will know that I spend the vast majority of my time out on the fringe.
Admittedly, my modern longevity is entirely down to the fact that I almost exclusively fly covert ops vessels nowadays, but the point still stands... surviving in nullsec space isn't hard provided you're wary and competent.
Congratulations anyway, Captain DesJardins. Here's to your continued success out in the border territories. Please imagine me raising a glass at this point. -
