I'm looking for suggestions/comments on what some good PSU brands are. I'm not interested in specific units really atm since I'm not buying for a bit, I just want to know what different brands are good and which ones suck so I don't buy a bad/un-trustworthy brand that'll crash after a bit.

I have a corsair PSU. Been running nice and cool at 600w for the last 3 or 4 months now. No complaints.
Big tip; don't buy anything that sounds cheap. 'LEETFANZ' or 'COOLERHAX' or '2COOL' are good examples, albeit made up. ---

running a Corsair 450W here, stable output, neat cables (they're all sheathed, so no mess) Stays very nice and cool and is very quiet. Cables are a bit long on this model though. (only a midi tower, and the cables are more suited for a maxi at 25 inches lenght each, but that's my own fault.)

I've run Antec brand PSU's in my last couple of machines. Very stable and absolutely no trouble out of them.

They're too long on my maxi, tbfh. Had to cabletie them to the top of my DVD drive ---

The last two machines I built have both had Akasa PSU's (450W and 1000W respectively) and I would not hestiate to recommend them. Virtually silent, rock solid and no weirdness or number fudging with the stated outputs of the rails.

I have had zero issues with Thermaltake. I have had 5 thermaltake's and can't recommend them enough. A bad PSU can really screw up a computer. I have had bad PSU's and the result is usually a fried mobo/cpu/ram. Never skimp on a good PSU.

I have used Antec for several years. and stand by them.
i have never ever had an Antec fail for any reason. ive had an old one survive a lightning strike which blew out several other things. (its on display now, not used because i needed a 24pin for my new mobo)

There's only one brand of PSU that matters. Seasonic.

I can recommend Corsair and Coolermaster from personal use, and recently bought a Seasonic for a cousin's build after seeing good reviews.
At all costs, stay away from those cheap and nasty OEM models that come with generic cases. It amazes me how many people place $1500 of hardware in the overloaded, overheated, under-engineered hands of a $30 PSU. ----------

Edited by: Mr Friendly on 27/12/2007 14:22:42 Spend a few hours on the 'net researching your stuff, please. I saw 3 brands in this thread I would NOT recommend, 2 I might, and one I would buy mostly blind (Hiper).
I have an OCZ and though I'm happy with it, it's not perfect. Same with most of the brands I have seen in this thread.
Do yourself a favor, find the amp range you're looking to need (not the 'watt' rating), the price range you want to spend, google it and spend a day or two looking at as many reviews for your 'short' picks as you can.
Expect to pay at least 125$ for a quality 450 to upwards of $400 for a 1000+ unit (though you won't need that unless you're running a 'farm' ;) ). IE, I paid 200$ for my 600w OCZ a year ago...
It's more about the amps supplied by the individual rail(s) and demanded by the components than strictly the watts theoretically supplied by the PSU... be wary of advertising bull and know what you need!
GL and happy reading...
(please... don't buy on brand alone... all manufacturers have made junk at one time or another)

The corsair PSUs seem to be a bit short on 12v rails...
I was looking at this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153039... good idea or no?

Corsair across the board tbh for me, imo it has the best airflow to noise ratio So if your intending on building a quite system its ideal and there's enough variety in power output models to cover most needs as well a mixture of modular and non modular cable set-ups for all your cabling needs. Sig removed as it lacks EVE-related content. Mail [email protected] if you have questions. -Hango

Currently using OCZ, seems good so far (only been used 2 months) and I like the system check it runs after every power off.
I used Antec before but didnt like them (made a stupid noise on start up that required a thump to make it stop). Before I knew better I used a JeanTech .. worst ever in my humble opinion. Heard only good things about Corsair but they were more expensive than the same stats from OCZ.
