That kind of goes against the whole "multiplayer" aspect of a MMORPG doesn't it? One can't take away gameplay from potential new players, especially email.

block evemails for the first day? give a new players a list to whom they may send eve-mails (like only those that have help channel open... and those peoples that have the new player in in buddy list - with an info in their evemails that they can only send evemails to to those)? block the ability to make links in evemails and public channels?
Not a big disadvantage but will block the usefullness of trial accounts for those bad isk selling bastard :) ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥-☻VENA☺-♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ |

Edited by: Riethe on 26/12/2007 09:17:05 Eve is a game that generally attracts (and keeps) more of the people that are introduced to it by friends that are already decently established.
The more you take away the abilities for people to bring in new blood and communicate with them, and dumb down the game on trial accounts, the less likely they stick around.
Overall, I think there has to be a better way to handle this kind of thing.
Don't ask me what it is, though. I just feel that cutting off these sort of things is overall more harmful than it is beneficial.

How bout filter words like: ISK GTC Sell Special Offer 12345 b1gger cash
Don't just remove them from the mail, but give a response to the sender: "Sorry, your EVEmail cannot be processed because it contains forbidden content." ----- TANSTAAFL

p.s. the ability for normal players to set an option not to recieve eve-mail from trial accounts nor see their messages in public channels... or at least those with links (autoblock trial users)... that might be handy :D Maby the ability fo normal players to flag the trial account guy if they post something bad (like 3 bad things = account locked and scheduled for investigation)... of course punishable if normal players overuse it for fun :)
Only blocking them for one day is not good enough. The same people hang around spamming for days on end.
Autoblocking evemail and/or chat from trials sounds better. Should be two seperate settings though. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

It'd be easier to create a list of banned words containing the adresses of the sites those mails refer to. Googling will provide you with a good start list, and CCP should update as new sites appear in mails or get reported by users.
The words contained on this list should be banned from eve-mails, chat, bios and corp descriptions. Also, it should not be possible to rename any object to something that has these words in it.
This should solve the spam pretty fast. Also you might want to automate the detection of any variations. As in naughtysite.com would automatically imply that naugthy site.com, n a u g h t y s i t e . c o m and all variations are banned as well.

If it were up to me I would simply limit the amount of mails a trail account could send per day to about 1-2 that way they can still mail someone if needed, but not spam everyone.

A few suggestions to this problem.
* Require people to have the receiver in the address book (unless the recipient is in the same non NPC Corp or Alliance). * Limit the frequency you can add people to your address book to 1 per minute.

How about not blocking them and just petition the spammers? Usually it doesn't take more than a few hours for CCP to ban them after you petition them.

1-2 is a bit too low, perhaps 10 or 20 for the whole account per day. That would make it hard enough to mail economically large numbers of people, and would not restrict 90% of legitimate players.
That would be much better than a blanket ban.

and they'll be right back on a new trial... some sort of filter would be the better solution, be it serverside or an editable client filter you can maintain yourself. maybe an option to block npc corp chars - might even encourage a small fraction to switch out of npc..

Why should I have to take action to avoid spam?
It's pointless anyway. They'll just make another FREE TRIAL ACCOUNT (which is what the thread is about) AT NO COST FOR NO MONEY and carry on doing exactly the same thing.
A passive system would require zero effort from either us the players or from any of the GMs or extra server workload but would ensure I didn't have to clear badly translated evemail out of my account on an hourly basis which is ******* irritating.
Word based filter systems, GM action etc. etc. all require effort. EVE RELATED CONTENT |
