Here is my config:
Ubuntu 7.10 (32-bit) AMD Athlon 64 X2 2Ghz (64-bit) NVIDIA GeForce 6100 (256MB) (latest driver 169.07) 2.5 GB of DDR-2 533mhz RAM
I am getting awful performance here... no more than 10-15 fps all the time, maybe 20 in-station if I'm lucky. I just got a three month membership but I'm a little disapointed with the performance. Is it normal that I'm getting such low framerate?
Thanks guys!

Probably your 3D is not active. Install glx-new driver and activate usage of restricted nvidia driver.

Edited by: Sevarus James on 27/12/2007 23:12:59 Hmm. when you do a glxinfo |more, are you getting "direct rendering: YES" ??
Also, please check my sticky up top about fps and make sure you are set up properly that way.
Something sounds fishy, as my rig is very similar to yours (except the card...8800gts), but you shoud be getting better fps than that.
That said, why put that sloppy ol' card in that rig? (you aren't going to get stellar performance with a 6100 no matter what you do, AND that card isn't even on the performance thread list.)
I'd recommend checking the tech lab thread, specifically this post to see performance comparisons:

He's already running the latest driver.
Try going through Sevarus James optimization sticky above?
Not sure about your card, though the current client is really cpu limited (premium graphics may be otherwise, no experience with it yet), so the card should be ok. Your CPU/RAM is plenty, though. More than, even.

Hello fellas!
Thanks for the quick replies. To answer some of your questions:
- glx-new is installed, 3D is indeed enabled and direct rendering returns "YES"
- Sevarus: I've checked your guide and fiddled with the settings, no go, I haven't been able to raise my FPS by any substantial ammount by tweaking the settings.
- Ereman: resolution is at 1680x1050 on a widescreen LG monitor.
I know a 6100 is no performance beast, but its built into my rig, I may get something else in the near future, we'll see (what would you recommend anyway? I'm not extremely knowledgeable with this stuff).
In any case, I've read a ton of threads on this forum but nothing's helped so far.
I'll be re-installing Ubuntu Gutsy in the next few days so I can make sure that there isn't anything funky with my current install of the distro. A clean slate may help, who knows.
I'll beam back some feedback once I've gotten that done. Cheers all! |

Some more info:
- My AMD is not a 2Ghz Athlon 64 X2 but rather a 2.20Ghz Athlon 64 3800+ - I used Envy to install the latest NVidia 169.07 driver - I just reinstalled Eve as the previous client I was running was crashing a lot after the Trinity update, now that I have a fresh Eve client, I'm crash-free

Edited by: Ereman Sarat on 28/12/2007 01:21:41 Hmm.. as far as recommended upgrades would be concerned, it'd be more a case of if you were intending to use the system for heavy gaming, or not, in the future.
Minimal cost with future-proofing, would be some flavor of nvidia 8600...
more cost, VERY nice performance, future proof, would be an 8800GT, for, if you can find one, approx 250. (VERY hard to find at that pricing right now, mebbe soon).
I'm not sure, but perhaps it IS your card that's slowing you down. Testing could confirm, if you could borrow a better card from someone?
I should think, if you werent trying to run anti-aliasing or anything, that you should be able to manage faster than 15fps, however.

PS: Shared memory bandwidth with the system memory might be doing it.

Have you tried running the Windows version using Wine?
The latest version 0.9.52 works well with the current windows version (both classic and premium graphics, if you enable Shaders in winecfg) Seems to use a lot less CPU than the official client.

First you're very welcome.
2nd...that 6100 is choking. Seriously. Performance on those cards is below the lowest in that thread I gave you. As to recommendations, that thread also has the price/performance listing. Find what's in you spending range, and go with the BEST card in that range.
My personal recommendation is to go with a 8x series card as you won't be gimped for quite awhile to come, AND video drivers though backward compatible, are geared toward the newer cards.
Again, that thread is the place to look.
